3 Ways to Wear Spring Clothes When It's Still Winter

Huge thanks to Kohl’s and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post

With spring approaching but not fully here yet, I know many of you are ready to move on from winter clothes but don’t feel like you can, given the current temps. If you’re itching for a change, today’s post is for you! I want to help you out with three tips for how to wear spring clothes when it’s still cold, and I’m partnering with Kohl’s and ShopStyle to do it.

Kohl’s has lots of great clothes that you can wear now and later in the spring, and Kohl’s has really, really awesome prices! I also love that Kohl’s has tons of variety with clothes for all activities and a good range of sizes that includes straight, petite, and plus options, and some pants in tall and long. You can also shop there conveniently by placing your order online and then using Kohl’s curbside and in-store pickup options.

There are several things you can do to start adding spring elements to your outfits without overlooking the practical need to stay warm. Here are a few simple tips for how to wear spring clothes when it’s still cold!

SIZING: I’m 5’6” and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. Swap your dark jeans for jeans in a light or medium wash.
Take that sweater + jeans combo that you’ve been wearing all winter, and instead of wearing dark wash jeans, go for light wash jeans! This tip seems really small and simple, but it goes a long way in refreshing your outfits and helping you look forward towards spring.

This outfit combo is just a sweater with jeans and booties, which is a typical combo for the winter. But it has a fresher feel, thanks to light wash jeans. (A bright sweater helps, too, which we’ll see in tip #2!)

These jeans come in 3 washes and are on sale for $34.99! See all the options HERE. I’m wearing size 6 in the color “Light Wash.”

I have shared this sweater before, but unfortunately it’s very limited in sizes. This is such an easygoing piece to wear with a relaxed fit, and the texture adds a lot of visual interest so that you can look more stylish without having to try harder. That’s my favorite kind of style! 😄 On top of that, this sweater is only $12.60 and comes in 4 colors! Check if it’s available in your size. You can find it in straight sizes HERE and plus sizes HERE and petite sizes HERE. I wear size S. There is also a similar yellow sweater HERE.

2. Wear sweaters and sweatshirts in spring colors and prints.
You don’t need to ditch sweaters and sweatshirts to dress for spring! Just swap out winter styles for sweaters and sweatshirts in spring designs, and you can begin to transition away from full-blown winter outfits while staying warm.

This sweatshirt is soft with a flexible fabric that is easy to move around in, and it has a thin fleece lining. It works well with dark wash jeans, but I went for a medium wash to “springify” it even more. (See tip #1 above!) It’s available in 4 cute prints, and it’s ONLY $12.60!!! Check out all the prints HERE. I’m wearing size S.

I added slip-on sneakers to finish off the casual outfit. If you need a bit warmer of an option, casual ankle boots or sneaker boots work, too. But on the note of these shoes, they’re really comfortable with a cushioned footbed and soft, flexible upper. As for the color, they’re not a super duper bright white, and I love that. They have somewhat of a pebbled texture which adds style and visual interest, and it also keeps them from looking preppy (which I don’t prefer since my style is more relaxed than preppy)! They’re available in regular width and wide options, HERE. I’m wearing size 8.5.

Also, these jeans are fairly soft with stretch and are only $24.99 on sale right now! They’re definitely worth checking out if you are looking for new jeans that won’t break the bank. They’re available in short, regular, and tall lengths, HERE. Find plus size options HERE. I’m wearing size 6 in the wash “Linden.”

3. Wear tops with springy prints, layered with cozy cardigans.
Go ahead and wear those tops with spring prints, and layer them up with a cardigan and boots to stay warm. You can do it with a lighter palette (like I shared in THIS post, in the first outfit), or you can tone it down a bit with medium tones, like I’m doing here. Either way, you’ll inject a little (or a lot) of spring vibes into your outfit while layering up to stay warm.

BTW, this cardigan is a great layer that works now and in the spring! It’s on the thicker side, it’s SOFT and COZY and it’s pretty warm without being heavy and weighing you down. It gives your outfits a modern look with its medium length and slight puff sleeves. It comes in 6 colors in straight sizes HERE and 2 colors in plus sizes HERE. I’m wearing size XSruns large!

This top is super pretty and great for work, dates, and nicer casual outfits. Its satiny feel, cross-front neckline, and peplum hem dresses up your outfits with style and polish. The waistband is elastic to give you a more comfortable fit. It comes in 2 prints and 4 solid colors, which you can see, HERE. I wear size S. It’s a short sleeve top, so you might need to save this for slightly warmer days, but you can wear any other long sleeve printed top and apply the same rules to add spring elements and stay warm.

Also, these jeans are REALLY, REALLY comfortable! They are SOFT and very, very stretchy. Plus they have a forgiving STRETCHY WAISTBAND! And, they’re under $50!!! They feel like brands that typically cost more than that. If you’ve been looking for stretchy, comfortable bootcut jeans, you should definitely try these! They’re available in 4 washes and in short, regular, and tall lengths, HERE and in plus sizes HERE. I’m wearing size 6 in the color “Renegade.”
