Three Ways to Spice Up Your Fall Basics

To me, the ideal wardrobe consists of staples with a mixture of some statement pieces to punch up those basics and help your wardrobe feel unique and expressive of who you are.

For example, in this outfit I have a black and white plaid top (found HERE), which could be considered a fall staple, paired with some jeans.  (See very bottom of post to shop this look.)  To make the outfit just a little more interesting I added a mustard scarf as an accent.  It’s not a crazy bold statement, but it’s not completely basic either, which is how I roll–pretty “standard” with just a small touch of something that stands out.  Someone else could add other accent pieces, whether even louder and bolder or even more subtle, to easily create lots of unique looks with this same base.

Today we are going to talk about 3 ways to spice up your fall wardrobe, honing in on types of pieces to elevate those basics.  One of my go-to shops when searching for pieces to spice up my wardrobe is ModCloth, and I’m really excited to partner with them today because I can’t think of a better shop to help with this!

ModCloth carries some very unique pieces, but they also have a tonnnnn of pieces that are somewhat basic but have playful details to make them stand out.  Plus, their inventory is insane.  They have so many things to choose from that you should be able to find something, which is another reason it’s perfect for building that ideal wardrobe of basics and statement pieces.

As for elevating those basics, here’s what I recommend focusing on:

1.  Colorful accent pieces.  Fall is all about layering, which is why it’s such a fun season to get dressed in.  Layers can make outfits more interesting and pull together outfits more easily.  But, to use layering to your advantage and spice up those basics, go for colorful accent pieces.  Whether it’s something like the mustard scarf I’m wearing above (found HERE), a red statement coat (like THIS ONE), or a cool wine colored jacket (like THIS), having colorful accent pieces will punch up your outfit.

Below are some more colorful accent pieces you could add onto an outfit of basics.  OMG I love every single one of these!  ðŸ˜€

2.  Sweaters with cute patterns, bright colors, or special details.  Again with the layering, instead of a very plain, very boring sweater, find ones with something special.  This bold green one HERE would serve as a colorful accent as described above, but a neutral colored sweater with an open knit and scallop pattern (HERE) makes a different kind of statement, allowing you to wear a neutral but by no means be boring.  And a sweater like THIS with a character print is fun and quirky!

The details in any of those sweaters would give them enough character to stand on their own, but you can also layer them over button up shirts for more of a statement.

More sweaters that would punch up your fall wardrobe are below, and I will be trying option 2 and option 5.  Can’t wait!

3.  Big cardigans with fun prints and patterns.  This is perhaps the quickest, simplest way to make a statement with the most basic of all basics.  Just imagine jeans and a white t-shirt.  Then put one of the cardigans below over the whole outfit.  Voila!  You look chic, stylish, and pulled together instantly.  And you do it while being wrapped in a comfy cardigan that might as well be a blanket.  The best!

Option 2 below is the more affordable of the bunch and great reviews!  Fran wore cardigan #1 and looked awesome!
