7 Ways to Wear a Navy Gingham Button Up for Fall

I’ve said before that this navy gingham button-up is one of the most remixable pieces in my closet. For years I stayed away from gingham button-ups because the ones I’d tried were very stiff and I didn’t feel that I could wear them in a casual, laid back environment. Then, I found this one a couple of years ago. It’s on the thinner side and is relaxed and not stiff at all. You can wear it in the spring, fall, and winter depending on how mild your winter is or if you layer something under it. I’ve used it in a previous fall mini capsule packing list and have done various remixes with it, but they involved outfits for multiple seasons. I’m excited about remixing it today because the outfits are ALL for FALL!
7 Outfits for Fall with a Navy Gingham Button Up
SIZING & INFO
I’m 5’6″ and usually 6/8 or S/M in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.  I wear this top in S and you can find it HERE.
I machine wash and machine or air dry, but usually machine dry.  I’ve had it for so long that I can’t remember if there was initial shrinking, but regardless you can figure out sizing based on my size relative to yours.  Some people have said that the sleeves were short for them, which is probably true except I ALWAYS wear it with sleeves rolled up so I don’t notice.  Just make sure you look out for the sleeve length if you plan to leave them full length.
Some people have also complained that it wrinkles with washing.  When I dry it in the machine, I just fluff it out a couple times upon taking it out before it cools off and have not noticed excessive wrinkling.  Not sure what to make of that.  If there are wrinkles in it, I do not iron–I never iron.  I only ever steam my clothes now!
Side note: I hate ironing and never did it.  I discovered the beauty of using a steamer on clothes about 2 years ago and though I never used to iron anything, I steam everything.  There is something therapeutic about it and feels like WAY less of a hassle than ironing.  Just get one on Amazon for $20-$25, like THIS one.
Onto the outfits!

Gingham Button Up + Scarf + Black Skinnies + Riding Boots
Gingham Button up + Mustard Scarf + Black Skinnies + Riding Boots
Scarf + Boots
I’m starting off with no completer pieces.  Just add a scarf of almost ANY color and it’ll bring the shirt + jeans combo to life.  Adding tall boots helps too because…well, because tall boots make everything better.  Am I right?  🙂

Gingham Button up + White Cardigan + Booties
Skinny Jeans + Gingham Button up + White Cardigan

Cardigan + Jeans
This is the way I most often wear this top. It’s a super duper easy and looks cute every time. You can take this same outfit formula and mix it up by using different colored cardigans (neutral and colorful ones both work) and different colored jeans. See below!

BTW, all these pieces are part of the Fall Outfit Challenge, though this is not even one of the 5 outfits made with this top in the challenge!

White Skinnies + Booties + Gingham Button Up + Tan Cardigan
Tan Cardigan + White skinnies + booties + Blue gingham shirt
Cardigan + Jeans: Mixing It Up
Same outfit formula as above, just with white jeans! If you want to use colored cardigans, bright green, cobalt blue, mustard yellow, red, olive, and maroon would all look good, in addition to all the other neutrals out there like beige, black, navy.

Gingham Button Up + White Puffer Vest + Skinnies +Black Purse
White puffer Vest + Gingham Shirt + Skinnies + booties
Vest + Jeans
This top also goes really well with vests!  This outfit is made of all neutrals.  Since the dark wash jeans and navy gingham are somewhat uniform with the navy, I used a white vest for contrast to make the outfit pop more.

Maroon Skinnies + Gingham Button up + Mustard Scarf +Booties
Mustard Scarf + Maroon Skinnies + Gingham Button up + Blue Vest + booties
Vest + Jeans: Mixing It Up
Same outfit formula, but a simple swap of regular blue jeans for colored jeans makes for a fun and unique outfit.  Add on a colorful scarf, and the whole thing really comes alive!  This is a outfit from the Fall Outfit Challenge!  I loved it when I put together the image-collage, but I love it even more in real life!

Skinny Jeans + Tan Sweater + Gingham Shirt + Brown Tote
Tan Sweater + Gingham Button Up + Pendant Necklace + Skinnies + Booties
Pullover Sweater + Jeans
This is great for when it gets even colder.  I always had trouble pulling off the sweater over a button up look, but I finally realized my problem.  The sweaters I was using were too tight, so they kept slipping up my hips–and pulling the button up with it in wonky ways.  I’d constantly be tugging back down and adjusting both the sweater and shirt.  I finally got looser fitting pullovers and never need to adjust things anymore!

And of course, mix it up with different colored pullover sweaters!  This bright green is so fun against navy, but lots of other colors would be great too.
