You know that I recommend that your closet has a good mixture of foundational and filler pieces. Today I want to focus on the foundational pieces, and since Nordstrom is hands-down my favorite place to buy wardrobe staples, I’m partnering with Nordstrom and ShopStyle to do it!
If one of your goals this year is to improve your wardrobe, you should absolutely start by making sure you have a good set of wardrobe staples. Wardrobe staples are the workhorses in your closet that you will wear the most, so it’s important that they are super comfortable and feel good when you wear them. And you know that most of my favorite wardrobe staples come from Nordstrom. I LOVE how Nordstrom’s clothes feel!

Now, let me share a few of my favorite wardrobe staples from Nordstrom that are currently available!
SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
1. COMFORTABLE Jeans
Jeans are a casual staple that can be dressed up or down, but a COMFORTABLE pair is KEY to ensuring that you’ll actually want to wear them. My favorite brand is Wit & Wisdom, namely their Ab-solution line. Wit & Wisdom jeans are VERY STRETCHY, SOFT, and super duper comfortable. Plus, they have an ELASTIC WAISTBAND (and a zipper and fly) so that you don’t feel constricted and can move about comfortably. Find them in petite sizing HERE, and in plus sizing HERE. If you absolutely hate jeans but haven’t given Wit & Wisdom a try yet, please do!
If Wit & Wisdom doesn’t work for you, other brands that have comfortable denim are KUT from the Kloth and Liverpool Los Angeles, though they don’t have the elastic waistband that Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution jeans have. And the elastic waistband is what puts it over the top for me.
The pair I’m wearing above is a medium wash pair of skinny jeans that you can find HERE. I’m showing it dressed down with the fleece pullover and dressed up with a sweater and booties. I wear those in size 4.

Having a super comfortable pair of everyday jeans that you can go to when you don’t really feel like getting dressed helps so much!

BTW, this fleece pullover is SOOOO, so comfortable! It’s pretty pricey, but I have become REALLY attached to it because it just feels amazing. It’s incredibly soft and very, very lightweight so it doesn’t feel like it weighs you down or constricts you, but it’s warm. I LOVE it! Find it HERE. I’m wearing size S.
1b. Comfortable Bootcut Jeans (or other non-skinny cuts)
Since jeans are such a huge staple, get a few different cuts and washes to change up your outfits. These bootcut jeans are another pair of Wit & Wisdom jeans that are SOOO soft and stretchy, and they’re extra comfortable with the elastic waistband! These have been a major PMT reader favorite over the years! They make your legs look long and your outfits look polished. Find them in straight sizes HERE and plus sizes HERE. I wear these in size 8. Size 6 fit in terms of comfort, but they accentuated my thighs more and also brought up the length. However, other PMTers who don’t have as full of thighs as I do got their regular size, which would have been size 6 for me in this case. (The great thing about ordering from Nordstrom is that the offer free return shipping on all orders, so you can order multiple sizes to find your best fit and easily send back the ones that don’t work.)

2. Leggings
If you’re a leggings lover, I hope you have a GREAT pair of leggings. Zella leggings from Nordstrom are my favorites.
The Live-In Leggings are one of Zella’s staple pairs. The material is supportive with a bit of compression to offer a flattering fit but feels fairly breathable at the same time. (I have often felt suffocated in some other leggings!) They have a wide waistband that doesn’t fold down but stays in place and helps keep you supported. Check them out, HERE. I wear size M.
And yep, there’s that fleece pullover again. It works with jeans and with leggings!

3. Slacks by Liverpool Los Angeles
The Kelsey Knit Trousers by Liverpool Los Angeles are SOOOOOOOO, SOOOOOOO comfortable! I cannot stress enough how comfortable they are! They are smooth, EXTREMELY STRETCHY, and fairly thick. They look really, really polished…but they feel like yoga pants! They are INSANELY COMFORTABLE. If it sounds like I’m yelling, I am—they’re just so good, and I can’t help it! 😂
They come in 7 colors in straight and petite sizes, HERE. Find them in plus sizes, HERE. I wear size 4 as they run a bit large. Unfortunately, they are a skinny ankle cut so they don’t work that well with booties for this time of year, but they are MUST-HAVES for all the other months!

4. Striped Tee
A striped tee is a great wardrobe staple, and the one I’m wearing in this outfit and in the previous outfit is a great option. It’s SUPER soft and incredibly stretchy. So, so comfortable! It’s quite fitted, so I prefer it for more polished looks and tucking it fully into pants or skirts. I showed it in the previous outfit with black slacks and a blazer, and here I’m showing it in a more relaxed work look with a cardigan and flats. You can wear it with jeans, too! Find it HERE. 5. Camisole
This isn’t a must-have, but a camisole can be a great wardrobe staple to include. You can layer it under jackets, blazers, and cardigans. This camisole in particular is a great elevated basic. The pintuck detail around the neckline adds just the right amount of visual interest without being overpowering. It drapes really well and looks polished. The straps are adjustable, and it is lined so it’s not see-through, and the torso has a little more room around the hips compared to other camisoles, which are typically too tight near my wider hips. This comes in both white and black and can be worn to work with a blazer, worn in a nicer casual look with jeans and a cardigan, and can be worn for a date with a blazer, jeans, and heels. It’s super versatile and is a great piece to have when you need to get dressed in a pinch and look good!
