Huge thanks to Kohl’s and ShopStyle Collective for sponsoring this post

I know a lot of you would love to make your outfits more interesting, and one way to do that is with statement layers! While you can certainly add statement items that aren’t layers, this is a great time of year to utilize those outer pieces! Today I want to share a few COMFY statement layers and three tips for how to wear statement pieces to make your outfits more interesting, and I’m partnering with Kohl’s and ShopStyle Collective to do it!

On top of that, Kohl’s has some really, truly great items at the most affordable prices! They are seriously SO good. Also, Kohl’s offers a large range of sizing options, including straight, petite, and plus options, as well as short, regular, and tall/long pant options. Alright, let’s talk through some guidelines for how to wear statement pieces in outfits!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. Start with a base of all basics.
When I coach women on wardrobe strategy, I always say that a great closet has a good mixture of basic foundational pieces and filler pieces. You could also call them staple pieces and statement pieces. While basics may seem boring to some, they are necessary to glue together all of your statement pieces. And one very simple way to wear a statement piece is to pair it with all basics! The basics give you a good foundation, and the statement piece will elevate the entire outfit and make it more interesting.

In the outfit here, the base is simply a white top and medium wash jeans. Both are plain pieces in neutral colors, and they make a great canvas to layer a statement piece on top, like this awesome printed cardigan.

This cardigan is thick and keeps you warm. It instantly makes the basics pop! And it’s ON SALE for $26.39! The cardigan comes in 14 printsHERE. See petite options HERE and plus sizes HERE. I wear size S.

Here is another example of a statement piece on top of basics. But, this time I’m wearing a colored sweater with jeans underneath. The printed sherpa zip-up adds a fun pop!

Also, OHMIGOSH. I LOVE THIS SHERPA ZIP-UP! I own it in this print and in the solid tan version. I’ve had them for 1.5 months and have been wearing them nonstop. This zip-up is SOOOO COZY. It’s SOFT, and really, really warm! And it’s ONLY $19.99 which blows my mind for how good it is! It keeps me warmer than some of my puffy jackets, honestly. Unfortunately, it’s now limited in sizes and colors, but I’m hoping it gets restocked. See what’s available in your size, HERE. I wear size XSit runs large.

2. Create cohesion by incorporating a color from the print elsewhere in your outfit.
While you could throw a statement piece over any combination of basics, you want to aim for cohesion so that the basics support and complement the statement piece. That will allow the statement piece to be the focal point and really pop.

One easy way to do that is by using the style strategy of “color pulling.” Color pulling is when you simply pull out a color from a printed piece and use it elsewhere in the outfit.

In the outfit above, the plaid blazer is the statement piece. It has threads of black, cream, and a sort of tannish burnt orangey color. To create a cohesive outfit, I pulled out the tannish orange color and used it in my shirt. And even though I could have paired this top with blue denim, I pulled out the black from the blazer as well and went with black jeans instead. Color pulling is awesome because the print does all the work for you of tying together your outfit and making it look cohesive!

This plaid blazer is really SOFT and stretchy, so it’s comfy but looks put together. (You know I love clothes like that.) The longer length is modern and current, too! It comes in this print and 3 solid colors in straight sizesHERE. Find it in petite sizes HERE and plus sizes HERE. I’m wearing size S in “Mocha Frosting Plaid.” (BTW the colorway for this print looks solid orange, so click the orange icons until one says “Mocha Frosting Plaid.”

3. Go for a streamline, monochrome base.
Another super duper simple thing you can do is to keep the base all the same color. For cohesion, choose one of the neutrals that’s in the print.

In this outfit, the base is just black jeans and a black top. Then, I threw on a super cozy blanket wrap that is made of black, grey, and white. We are technically doing the color-pulling strategy that I mentioned above, but this time with an entirely monochromatic base. It makes things really simpleyou know that everything works together easily. Once you throw on the statement piece, it makes the outfit stand out!

BTW, the wrap that I’m wearing on top is SOOOO fuzzy, soft, and cozy! It’s meant for lounging at home, so you can totally pair it with leggings and a sweater while cozying up on the couch. But, during those times that you might be out and wishing you had a blanket to cover yourself up, this is a really stylish optionand practical! The wrap has a button on the side to help it stay on, and the shape allows your arms to be free. Plus, it’s reversible and the other side is solid. If you don’t want to wear a print, you can flip it around and use the solid side. It comes in 5 prints and 2 sizes, HERE! And, it’s just $19.99 right now! I’m wearing “Black White Plaid” in the size S/M.
