8 Ways to Wear a Chambray Shirt (by Kimmie from Blue Paper Lanterns)

Hi everyone!  Since I’ve been traveling like cray-zay I’ve asked a few friends to blog-sit for me.  All week I have some amazing guest posts lined up, and first up is Kimmie from Blue Paper Lanterns!

Her blog was among one of the first 5-10 that I ever started following, and I couldn’t help it.  Not only does she dress super cute, but reading her bio was basically like reading mine, except that I don’t have 2 kids.  Anyone who shares similar affections for Target, boba, and sugar is a friend in my book.  Anyway, there’s no need to miss me because Kimmie’s here instead–with a fantastic post, might I add!

Hi Putting Me Together readers! I’m Kimmie from Blue Paper Lanterns. I’m filling in for Audrey while she’s traveling this month, but since we’re pretty much the same person, so you don’t even have to miss her. Both Audrey and I love Target, boba, and candy. Plus did you know that she had big turquoise lanterns (my blog’s namesake) at her wedding, too? Just kidding (about the same person part) because Audrey is waaaay cooler than me, and I love her blog and all the wonderful wardrobe tips that she provides for her wonderful readers (THAT’S YOU).

One of my favorite features of Putting Me Together is Audrey’s One Piece Different Ways series where she takes one item and shows us a bunch of different outfit ideas using that item. In one of her recent posts, Audrey wrote that a chambray shirt is closet staple and a great alternative to a plain tee.

Personally, I like to treat chambray as a neutral, just like jeans, and it pretty much goes with everything! The ways to wear a chambray shirt are endless, but here are a few of my favorites:

1. Tucked into colored jeans, with or without a cardigan thrown over.
2. Worn open like a light jacket or cardigan over a fun tank top or tee.
3. Layered under a sweater.
4. Knotted and worn over a dress (or skirt). Audrey knotted hers over a maxi skirt which was really cute as well.
5. Tucked into a skirt of any color or shape, my favorite way to wear chambray tops!
6. Paired with dark denim. Try to avoid wearing jeans that are too close in color to the shirt or else you’ll look like you’re wearing a Canadian tuxedo.
7. Untucked and layered under a belted cardigan.
8. Layered under a dress. This works best when the dress is a thicker knit and has 3/4 or long sleeves. A trick for smooth lines is wearing a tank top OVER the chambray shirt (see example here), and tucking it into your tights 🙂

What are some of your favorite ways to wear chambray shirts?

Hop over to Kimmie’s blog Blue Paper Lanterns to say hello!
