3 Outfit Formulas for Winter business casual

Want help planning your outfits for the rest of the week?  Today I’m sharing three winter business casual outfit formulas to give you some winter workwear inspiration!  And actually, even if you don’t need to winter work outfits, you’re in luck.  These formulas make great casual outfits too!

Today’s outfits are more in line with Relaxed Business Casual style and easily crossover as elevated casual outfits, so you can wear these even if you don’t need to dress for work. (For more on the different types of Business Casual style, check out the post What Is Business Casual Style?)

I’m using quite a few older pieces that are no longer available, so I included similar options that are currently available.  Also, you can do these outfit formulas with lots of different kinds of pieces that are already in your own closet.  See what you can come up with based on these formulas!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes, 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. Dress + Cardigan + Tall Boots + (Tights)

My first thought with dresses in the winter is, “Ugh.”  But in actuality, they are so comfy! Especially stretchy wrap dresses like the ones I’m wearing above. Of course, you can do this combo with any dress, and some more formal work environments might require more tailored dresses. But, I really love these types of dresses because they offer flattering silhouettes, look polished, work with tall boots, and are so comfy! They don’t squeeze you anywhere and are easy to move around in.

I layered it up with an oversized cardigan and tall boots. For more formal environments, go for a fitted cardigan and sleeker boots with a smaller heel and pointier toe for sharper looks.

This dress comes in 20 prints and colors!  Check them out HERE.  I wear size M because the arms on S felt a little tight.

2. Tunic Sweater + Ponte Pants or Leggings + Printed Accessory

Winter Work Tunic Outfit: maroon tunic sweater + black skinny pants + leopard print booties with kitten heel + grey bag + gold pendant necklace Winter Work Tunic Outfit: maroon tunic sweater + black skinny pants + grey bag + leopard print booties with kitten heel + gold pendant necklace Winter Work Tunic Outfit: maroon tunic sweater + grey bag + black skinny pants + leopard print booties with kitten heel + gold pendant necklace

I’ve shown this outfit several times before, but this outfit formula is one you can replicate with different tunic sweaters.  You can use ponte pants, leggings, or faux leather leggings to dress it up more.  Jazz it up with printed accessories, like these leopard print booties, or go for a leopard print or plaid scarf.  Several of you have sent me pictures of you replicating this outfit at work and loving how comfy you can be!

3. Printed Sweater + Blazer + Black Jeans or Pants

This is a great option if you need more layers.  You can make a sweater warmer by wearing a thin layer underneath and on top.  (My favorite layers under clothes are HEATTECHs by UNIQO.  Read more about them in How I Stay Warm In the Winter While Trying to Look Cute.)  As for layers on top, go with structured pieces like blazers or other jackets.  Choose printed sweaters to create more visual interest in the outfit.

This is the J.Crew Factory sweater blazer that I first showed in the fall in maroon (HERE) and recently in black (HERE).  It’s cozier and a bit warmer than a regular blazer, which is much appreciated this time of year.  The green one is no longer available, but J.Crew Factory seems to be rotating the colors through out the seasons.  Check out current colors HERE.

Shop the Outfit:
Sweater: J.Crew Factory (similar, similar)
Sweater Blazer: c/o J.Crew Factory (exact in other colors, similar in Dark Green and many other colors)
Jeans: Macy’s (similar, similar)
Tote: J.Crew Factory (similar)
Booties: c/o Macy’s (exact-wearing size 9)
Necklace: c/o Dear Mushka (exact)
Earrings: c/o Nickel & Suede (exact)

My sweater is also unavailable, but lots of printed sweaters would work. Here are a few in the widget below:

There you go!  Rotate through these and you’ll have your outfits planned for the rest of the week!
