Nordstrom Rack is one of my favorite places to shop for special occasion attire! They carry so many FANTASTIC brands that typically cost way more, but you can get them for less at Nordstrom Rack. On top of that, I also love that Nordstrom Rack carries straight, petite, and plus sizes. And, you can shop conveniently by utilizing their in-store and curbside pickup options.
SIZING INFO: I’m 5’6” and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
1. Dresses
Nordstrom Rack has lots of special occasion dresses for all sorts of events, from birthday celebrations to weddings and more. Nordstrom Rack has a great selection of plus-size dresses, too!
Here, I’m showing a beautiful maxi dress styled for a birthday dinner or a graduation with flat sandals. You could dress it up more by adding nude or metallic heels, like THESE or THESE, and adding a white blazer (petite white blazer here) instead of a denim jacket.
This dress is lightweight, stretchy around the bust, and has adjustable tied straps. Its print is gorgeous and makes a stunning, fun statement, perfect to celebrate in! And it’s only $39.97!! It comes in 4 prints, HERE. I’m wearing size S.
These sandals are a good, affordable option that you can easily pair with dresses and skirts as well as shorts and linen pants. They are only $29.97 but feel sturdier than other sandals in that price range. (Another thing I totally recommend shopping for at Nordstrom Rack is shoes, as you can get great ones for less!) 2. Jumpsuits
I am all about jumpsuits for special occasions! They make a huge statement, and I love getting to wear pants. 😄 It’s easy to find super stretchy and comfortable jumpsuits, too!
And this jumpsuit is just that—STRETCHY and COMFY! It is sooooo comfortable, but it looks really chic, stylish, and fancy. The material is pretty thick and drapes so well, which makes it look upscale. Fabric is a huge factor for how upscale and elevated a piece looks! This jumpsuit has a little metal detail at the neckline, which is a small touch but dresses it up even more. Plus, there is an elastic waistband that cinches in the waist and provides shape, and there is a tie belt to add a finishing touch. Last, POCKETS! I never get tired of the delight in discovering an item has pockets, haha! This jumpsuit feels upscale and is by a great brand, Vince Camuto, but it’s ONLY $49.97! I’ve paid 30% more than that for a simple blouse by Vince Camuto, so to get a beautiful jumpsuit for under $50 is an AMAZING value. One note is that the metal bar at the neckline is a darker metallic color, but it looks lighter because the sun is reflecting off of it in my pictures. Though the bar is gunmetal, but I paired the jumpsuit with golds and mixed metals—that’s totally fine to do!
Another note is that if a jumpsuit that has a built-in waistband in the middle is not best for you (mostly not great for apple shaped women), then find one that falls straight down the midsection instead. There are some options in the widget below!

3. Skirt + Blouse
You can also wear a skirt and a blouse! This skirt works for the semi-casual, semi-dressy occasions, if you pair it with a blouse and heels like I’m showing here.
This skirt is very, very lightweight and has a button-down closure along the front and two large front pockets. It comes in 3 prints and is just $29.97! You can also dress it down with a basic t-shirt or tank and flat sandals for an everyday elevated casual outfit, which means you’ll be able to wear it more and really get your money’s worth from it. As for the top, unfortunately sizes are limited, but I find it worth mentioning anyway! The material feels fairly thick and sturdy (e.g., not cheap and flimsy) but it has a great drape and has some stretch for comfort. It has flutter sleeves to elevate it, and between the material and the sleeves, it is dressy enough to be worn in a dressier outfit like this and with slacks for work, or you can dress it down for a nice casual outfit with jeans.
