Shopping Help: Plain and Playful Summer Tops #1

If I learned anything from trying to put together this post it’s that shopping for tops can be kind of overwhelming.  There are so many types of tops out there!  On second thought…shopping for tops can either be daunting or you can easily–so so easily–find yourself in a rut with the types of tops you buy.  I know I was in a rut with my tops for a long time, sticking to the same types of tops with similar shapes.  And I’m still prone to doing that.
As overwhelming as it was to put this post together and be hit with the many, many types of tops out there, it was pretty eye opening.  Today I’m only showing 3 of the approximately 789,902,183 types of tops you can buy.  This week’s choices would all pair well with jeans and shorts and lend themselves to more casual wear.  (Though, a couple of these could absolutely be dressed up.)  Next week I’ll include more tops that can be mixed and matched to wear to an office or get a little dressier.
All are under $40 (most are under $30!) and mostly from Target, Kohl’s, and J.Crew Factory.

Easy Blouses: Navy Flutter Sleeve (plain)  |  Grey Pleated Print (playful)  |  Coral Textured Dot Top (pop)

I don’t know about you, but in the summer I want my tops to allow some airflow rather than tightly hugging my figure.  These tops all have a looser fit that allows your skin to breathe and they easily work into an outfit.  While you can wear all of these with blue jeans, they’d go with white jeans or white shorts too!

Notes: Flutter sleeve comes in 4 colors.  Pleated top comes in 6 variations!  The coral top not only has lace detailing at the neck, but it also has a dot texture (which you can see better on the product page).

Sleeveless: Turquoise Crochet Trim (plain)  |  Pineapple Tank (playful)  |  Floral (pop)

Notes: Crochet trim top also comes in blue.  The “playful” one is a pineapple print!–somehow pineapples are “in” right now.  I LOVE the floral tank, and it has a pretty bow at the back collar.

Peasant Tops: Beige Lace (plain)  |  Blue Embroidered (playful)  |  Coral Dotted (pop)

It seems like every store I go to these days has a section of peasant tops.  There are some really cute options out there–so many that I could do a post on peasant tops alone.  But I’ll spare you.  Except for pointing out this fourth one that I didn’t show but I really, really love.  White with a subtle gold chevron design.  <3

Notes: Lace shirt comes in white too.  Embroidered top comes in yellow/white and white/black.  I really like the white/black one too.  Dotted top comes in light blue/white and ivory/navy.

I really like the idea of this post because I feel I am stuck in a V-neck tee rut, and I think all of these tops are completely adorable. However. With a small frame and a large (32DD) chest, most or all of these tops would make me look pregnant. Which I am not right now. Any thoughts on cute summery tops (other than plain, knit tees) which flatter a large chest and rather small middle? Please and thank you!

Oh goodness, great point, Alyson! I'll look for some that flatter the bust and give some more shape for those with more curves.

The pineapples are too cute – and I love the other color too (a pale blue with sailboats!)

I love all the things you post on here! However, I'm a nursing mom to a lovely 3 month old and finding tops that accommodate nursing easily is tough. Have you decided whether you'll nurse or bottle feed? Would you consider adding some nursing-friendly tops or perhaps a nursing friendly blog post?

I just discovered your blog through a link on Pinterest, and I have to say this is an AMAZING resource for building a wardrobe and making the most of each piece you buy. I am studying to be a personal stylist, and I will definitely share this with my clients. Really fabulous job!

I just bought this shirt: and love it so much. The elastic waist that allows it to fold over and kind of bubble makes it really comfortable too, and I don't have to worry about the flowy top flapping up.

Unfortunately I cannot find any shorts or capris that fit me this year. Everything is cut horribly for my body resulting it being too tight or way too big. 🙁

I've nursed 5 babies now, and I've realized it's pretty hard (let alone expensive!) to be buying nursing tops. There is not a huge selection of just nursing tops. What I do is purchase Undercover Mama nursing tanks to wear under my regular shirts. It works great! You can find them here:
