Letting Things Go

Do you have those pieces that are sitting in your closet, perfectly fantastic and even something you used to wear regularly but have passed over every morning for a while now?  This skirt is one of those.  It was one of the first skirts I bought when I began revamping my closet two years ago, but for the last year nothing seemed right with it.  Besides this animal print top.  This one has been sitting in my Go Chic or Go Home ensembles for so long, and finally today is the day!  However, beyond this outfit I’m still kind of stumped.  (I should add that it’s not the color that I’m stumped on, rather something isn’t clicking with me stylistically when I pair it with any of the tops I have.)
I always hear rules like you should get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for 6 months to 1 year, but so far I haven’t played by those rules.  Especially not when I really love a piece.  I hold out for a long time hoping my style preferences change to where I can use the piece again, and it’s not until I come to a place where I realize either a) I don’t actually love the piece, b) if I’m honest with myself I will functionally not wear it anymore or anytime in the foreseeable future, and/or c) it feels more burdensome than helpful to have it take up space in my closet that I will finally let something go.  What “rules” do you have when getting rid of something?
