One Dress Two Ways: How to Style a Dress in Summer and Fall

One Dress Two Ways: Wearing a Dress in Summer & Fall

Having versatile pieces in your closet is amazing!  Whether they are pieces you can wear for different occasions or pieces you can wear in different seasons, versatile pieces allow you to have more outfits with less clothes. 🙌🏽 As weather continues to transition from summer to fall, I want to show you how to easily take a piece and style it in summer and then later for fall.  Today’s focus is dresses!

Dresses are very easy to transition to other seasons, if you have the right dress.  Do you remember this cute dress from Target that I shared recently?  It’s super lightweight and is quite flattering as the wrap detail and tie at the waist create a silhouette that nips in at the waist and floats away from the body.  You can find this dress for only $24.99 HERE!  It’s got a silhouette that can be worn by itself in warmer weather, yet it’s simple enough to layer pieces over which makes it easy to style for fall.

Let’s talk through a very, very easy way to transition a dress like this into fall!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in cloths, 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

Warmer Weather: Flat or Heeled Sandals + (Denim Jacket)
For summer, I styled it here for a dressier look with open toe heeled sandals, but you could also dress it down with flat sandals like THESE.  If you need a layer, throw on a denim jacket like THIS or my favorite ultra-comfy, soft, stretchy denim jacket HERE.  With open toe sandals, the outfit is light and airy and great for summer.

Cooler Weather: Cardigan + Booties
A super easy way to style a dress for fall is to throw on an oversized cardigan and booties.  On a practical level, they keep you warmer when the weather dips into fall temps.  On a stylistic note, cardigans and boots add heavier texture to an otherwise pretty lightweight and summery dress.  When working with long oversized cardigans, I make sure to add my trusty long pendant necklace to anchor the look.

You can use any color cardigan you want, like oatmeal, black, or that tan one from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  I chose maroon to break up the neutrals a bit!
