Pulling Together Neutral Basics

I wore this to dinner with Benson last weekend to celebrate 7 years of marriage (as posted on Instagram HERE.)  I’ve tried wearing a nice dress out to dinner for past special occasions, and while I love dresses during the day I actually prefer jeans for nighttime looks.  Call me weird, but ideally I’d wear skinny jeans and a blazer with some heels or wedges.

This is a case where accessories totally make the outfit.  The outfit itself is super simple–white jeans and a solid black blouse.  A couple things that help is the blouse is one of those look-like-a-tshirt-but-not blouses I’ve talked about before.  (Some really nice options are below.)  Plain silhouette, but nice drape and dressier than a cotton tee.  And, it’s a dark color paired with white, a light color, for contrast.  But, overall it’s still plain, and there’s not even any real color between them.  However, the shoes, watch, and bag add some texture and the colorful statement necklace all help the outfit pop a little more.

Want a style challenge for the week?
If you’re looking for ways to mix and match or freshen up your pieces, this week try pairing a solid neutral piece that’s dark (whether a top or bottom) with another solid neutral piece that’s light, and add color somewhere.  It could be a colorful piece of jewelry (necklace, earrings, ring, bracelet), or colorful shoes.  Try it and see if you can find a new outfit waiting to happen!
