All You Need to Do

Tons of people write asking how they can look put together.  So here’s one VERY EASY thing you can do that I say often but is now buried in the archive of 4 years of blog posts.  Ready?  Add a statement necklace.  Even some statement earrings or a statement bracelet will do.
You can take some plain pieces and turn them into something that looks pulled together by adding a piece of statement jewelry.  In this case, it’s a plain grey dress with a staple denim jacket.  Neither of those are fancy.  But, add any type of statement necklace, and voila–you’ve got an outfit!  (See my list of accessories that pack a punch if you need some ideas.)

Adding a statement necklace works with dresses and even a plain t-shirt + jeans.  There are two things I try to be mindful of regarding my clothes to make this work.  First, they need to fit well or else things will still probably look sloppy.  (See HERE for why and how)

Second, the shoes.  At the very least, wear a “real” shoe, aka not a workout sneaker or flip flops.  Tan flats like THESE go with almost anything.  However, you could elevate the outfit even more with alternatives.  Sleek slip-on sneakers like these with dresses get the thumbs up right now, so milk it!  I could have worn tan flats, but white sneakers freshen up the vibe of the whole outfit.  Plus, they’re more comfortable!  But I could also have done sandals or wedges or a heel to dress up the look more.  Whatever it is, just make sure it’s a “real” shoe.  Add that necklace, and you should be good to go!

BTW, my sneaker is FINALLY back in stock HERE.  Or, the updated version is, anyway.  $39!  I normally wear 8.5-9 and got these in 8.5.

Below are a bunch of plain grey dresses that would serve as a great base for a bunch of different outfits.  All are from Old Navy, Target, or Nordstrom, and range from $12 to $45.  Option 6 is the most similar to mine in shape and color.  Option 1 is similar in shape and I own it in black–it’s super comfy!  Option 4 looks promising for curvier women.  Options 2 and 3 are a nice plain medium grey, close to the color of my dress.  And option 5 has pockets!
