When learning to remix and trying to rework my wardrobe, two major lessons I learned revolved around accessories. Number one: accessories can make or break an outfit. Number two: accessories can totally alter an outfit. Changing your accessories is a simple way to remix your wardrobe till the cows come home.
Yesterday I showed the outfit on the right as a look for going out, and today here’s the contrast between styling the dress for day vs. night.
Like I said yesterday, I never thought of t-shirt dresses as things that could be dressed up. They’re so comfy, and I don’t know about you, but when I feel like I could sleep in an item of clothing I think it’s a sin to wear it out, much less wear it out for a special occasion. But, no, not the case!

For “day” or casual wear, I styled it with a denim jacket and sneakers–two staples for casual wear. It’s pretty hot around here (or maybe it’s only thanks this little heater of a baby inside me) so a denim jacket in the summer is a little rough. But even without it, the sneaks alone make it an outfit fit for running around in. Flats and sandals and all other shoes work too, of course. I’m just super into white sneakers these days! And finally, a red tote–because, why not?

The evening look is surprisingly simple, but like I said yesterday, was an epiphany to me. Black pumps, a shiny statement necklace, a streamline black belt, and a leather jacket. All in the same color–does it get much easier than that? If a denim jacket feels rough in the summer, then a leather jacket might certify you as insane. At night it’s not too bad…at least not around here. However, since I’m currently carrying a built-in heater in my belly I made sure that this dress still looked dressy without the jacket.
I love that you can basically just swap your shoes and slap on a necklace and make a super comfy dress (or almost any dress, really) work for totally different occasions. It seriously feels so wrong to me that I hesitate about it all the time. But once I try it and am reminded of how freaking awesome it is to be able to make such small adjustments for big changes I want to be wrong all the time. All the time!
What are your go-to pieces to make an outfit/item casual, and what are your go-to pieces for dressing something up? For me, casual is a denim jacket and flats or sneakers. For evening, a clutch, heels, and a shiny statement necklace!
