Casual Statement Tops: Why You Need Some!

As I was building my summer wardrobe, one thing I really needed was more causal statement tops.  These are tops that feel like t-shirts and can be worn in really casual settings but have something special like interesting details, a print, or a modified silhouette.  In the summer my family and I tend to do a lot of casual outdoor activities, and while I love a good basic cotton tee with shorts, I knew adding some casual statement tops would keep my outfits more interesting and more fun.

Today I’m partnering with ModCloth to feature some fun casual tops because ModCloth has tons of them!  ModCloth is one of my go-to places when my wardrobe is feeling drab and lifeless.  Their collections are always full of color and prints, and that not only goes for tops but for everything–dresses, skirts, pants, and jackets too.  A few pieces from ModCloth always add life back to my closet!

Casual Summer Outfits With a Printed Top

I’d been eyeing this top for a few months, but once I was ready to pull the trigger, it was sold out.  It finally came back in stock and is available in 5 prints and colors in sizes XS to 4X!  See them all HERE.

It’s really soft with a loose fit–perfectly comfy for those casual summer activities!  It’s as easy as wearing a t-shirt except it makes your outfit a lot more fun and interesting.  Looks like you tried hard when you didn’t really.  The BEST!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and normally size S/M or 6/8.  I got this in M.

With these tops, the goal is to make getting dressed and looking put together easy, especially for casual everyday activities.  These kinds of tops can be rotated through several different staple bottoms, which I’ll talk about below!

Outfit #1 – Neutral Bottoms
Whether you choose white, black, navy, khaki, or denim shorts, these tops will turn any neutral bottom into an interesting outfit.  I personally love this top with white shorts, and in the spring it’d be great with white jeans.  Throw on simple accessories and head out the door!

Outfit #2 – Denim Shorts or Jeans
Any sort of printed tee will work well with denim shorts, but today I chose to show it with bootcut jeans.  If I wear jeans at all in the summer, I prefer bootcut or boyfriend jeans over my usual skinny jeans since they allow more breathing room.  Given that both the top and jeans are blue, I wanted to add another color to make it pop.  Yellow shoes were perfect!

Outfit #3 – Colored Bottoms
Lastly, tops like this will also go with a variety of colored bottoms.  I could have differentiated the three looks more by using a skirt for one of them, and I almost used a yellow pencil skirt for this one.  However, since I wanted to get add like these to my wardrobe for all those casual summer activities, I knew that in “real life” I wouldn’t wear skirts for casual activities.  Instead, I chose pink shorts!  They don’t look *that* different from my white shorts outfit, but you could go even bolder with brighter colored shorts like coral or yellow.

Like I said earlier, the beauty of tops like this is that you can just rotate them through different bottoms in your closet.  You don’t have to accessorize much for the outfit to be somewhat interesting–though you can if you want to!  If you want to liven up your casual wardrobe, I’d really recommend adding 2-3 of these kinds of tops to your closet!

Below I’ve rounded up several more casual statement tops from ModCloth for you!
