One reason I love fall style is because of all the completer pieces you get to wear! Completer pieces do just that–complete outfits. You could be wearing jeans and a tee, but by swapping the completer piece you can instantly change the outfit from a casual mom-on-the-go look to a dressy casual look for going out! Completer pieces are incredibly easy ways to to transform your outfit. (Wanna see what I mean? See my post on Completer Pieces 101 HERE!)
Today I’m sharing 5 of my go-to casual completer pieces for fall. They pretty much haven’t changed for the last several years, so you KNOW adding one of these will be worth your while!
SIZING INFO: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6/8 in clothes, 8.5 to 9 in shoes.
UTILITY JACKET – size S
If you’ve been around PMT you know a utility jacket is one of my fall staples. It’s a great lightweight layer that goes with almost anything. I wear these over jeans and a tee, jeans and a blouse, a dress with booties or a dress with sneakers—it’s really hard to go wrong! I love that they are a little tougher to better withstand dirt, and that they have huge pockets.
I always look for one that cinches at the waist so that they’re less boxy and provide shape. This one has an adjustable drawstring at the waist that you can cinch to best fit your body. ?? I also love the color! These jackets come in many shades of green and olive, and I love that this one is lighter and a little brighter. See it HERE.

Utility Vest
A utility vest is a great alternative to the utility jacket in warmer weather. You can wear these over tops and dresses of any sleeve length, like long sleeves, short sleeves, and even tank tops or camis.
I recently found a suuuuuuper soft one from JCPenney that is super duper affordable when it’s on sale. Find it HERE! Both size XS and S fit me pretty well. See ways I’ve worn my utility vest HERE.
FAUX SUEDE MOTO JACKET – size S
I’m a huuuuge fan of faux leather jackets! They elevate any outfit and give it a cool dressy casual vibe, and they’re my go-to pieces for completing dressier looks. Here I paired it with an olive lace tee and peep toe booties for a night out.

Knit Blazers
I used to think blazers were only for corporate offices and business suits until I realized blazers come in all different fabrics, drapes, and silhouettes. Some are more tailored and business-y, some are tailored but made of material that is better for business casual or casual style, and some like the knit blazer above feel like sweatshirts and can be great for casual outfits. Yes, I said this blazer feels like a sweatshirt! It’s a great option when you need a more polished casual look but still want to be super comfy!

Oversized Cardigans
Last, but definitely not least, oversized cardigans! These are my most-worn completer pieces in the fall (and winter and spring–just sayin’.) They are the comfiest and easiest to move around in. You can layer them over t-shirts, blouses like the one I’m wearing above, and button up tops like in THIS outfit I posted recently on Instagram and Facebook.
While fitted cardigans are great too, I specified “oversized” cardigans for casual style because the drapey oversized fit is key to effortless casual fall looks. (Check out this Style Session I did on Instastories a while back to illustrate the difference between these and fitted cardigans.)
While these are widely available in most stores during this time, I personally love BP cardigans and Leith cardigans from Nordstrom as I usually prefer the way they drape compared to others. But, there are plenty of cheaper options which are in the widget below if you’re not as picky about the drape. Also, most of what’s available this year are neutrals, darker colors, or more muted colors, but if you’re looking for gem tones and more saturated colors, there are a couple on Amazon like THIS one that comes in 39 colors (!!) and THIS one that comes in 11 colors.
