3 Types of Outerwear for Casual Outfits This Season + Outerwear Roundup for Women and Men

Huge thanks to Nordstrom and ShopStyle Collective for sponsoring this post

If you’re looking for extra layers or outerwear to gear up for being out and about during the holidays, today’s post is for you! I want to share three pieces of outerwear for casual outfits that are really comfortable, and I’m partnering with Nordstrom and ShopStyle Collective to do it!

As you know, Nordstrom is my favorite place to get comfortable clothes. I find pieces there that surpass others by miles in terms of how good they feel. Plus, Nordstrom offers free shipping and free return shipping on all orders, so you can try items and find your best fit with peace of mind. Also, if you sign up for free to be part of the Nordy Club, you get additional perks like earning points towards Nordstrom Notes, receiving Nordstrom Notes for alterations, and more. Check out all that the Nordy Club has to offer, HERE.

Here are a few different types of outerwear layers that you can throw onto your casual outfits this season! Also, at the bottom of this post, I rounded up MORE outerwear to check out for yourself, as well as some men’s options that you can gift to one of the guys on your list!

SIZING: I’m 5’6″ and usually S/M or 6 in clothes and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

Outfit #1: Cozy Wrap Jacket
I’ve shared this Zella jacket before, and it’s a great, cozy piece for athleisure. It has a thick, SOFT, fuzzy lining to keep you warm, both the outside and inside are soft and comfortable! It’s sporty but not “outdoorsy” and works perfectly for athleisure with leggings. Wear it open, or snap the neckline closed to bundle yourself up! It comes in 3 colors, HERE. I wear size XS as this runs quite large and can look quite ill-fitting if it’s too big.

I added the jacket over this really cozy tunic sweatshirt, which is another great piece for colder weather athleisure. It’s not just your ordinary sweatshirt. Rather, it’s super thick with a soft and fuzzy lining! At 28″ long, it’s long enough to cover my backside in leggings. (Measure yourself to see if that length works for you.) It also has POCKETS so you can keep your hands warm. This comes in 3 colors, HERE. I wear size S.

These Zella leggings are jacquard, and they have a different feel than standard leggings. They feel a bit softer, stretchier, and more breathable. I haven’t spent a whole lot of time in them yet, but I like them! They also have vertical side pockets along the upper thighs. This pair comes in 3 colors, HERE. I wear size S, which is my typical size in the 7/8 leggings.

Outfit #2: Shirt Jacket
If you’re up for trying a trending outerwear for casual outfits, consider a shirt jacket! It serves as a good option to wear over t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweaters and adds a lot of style. I would use it more as a lighter layer rather than a coat, similar to a utility jacket. Except a shirt jacket provides a much different look and is a bit warmer!

This particular shirt jacket is really, really soft on the outside, and it has a nice smooth lining on the inside. Many cheaper shirt jackets that I’ve tried are soft on the outside but scratchy on the inside, but that is not the case for this one. This feels much better all around. Shirt jackets are by nature quite oversized, so I usually size down one, if not two sizes to find my best fit. They can add bulk without adding shape, so I recognize they don’t play nicely with every body type. But if you are open to trying one, this one feels really good, and it comes in 5 colors! You can check them out, HERE. I wear size XS.

Also, these water resistant lug sole boots are a pretty good option for a super casual boot. I love that they are water resistant so that you have one less thing to worry about when it’s wet outside. The upper is soft and flexible, including around the ankle, which makes them more comfortable. They’re available in 3 colors, HERE. I really like the black version! As a heads up, the taupe is more grey-ish in person than it is on the product site. Not a bad or good thing, but just something to be aware of as colors can be tricky online. I wear size 8.5.

Outfit #3: Puffer Jacket
Last up is this puffer jacket by Bernardo! Bernardo jackets are great, and I especially like this one! First, it has seams that nip in at the waist to offer a more flattering shape, even while wearing a thick and bulky coat. It’s a versatile piece of outerwear for casual outfits that works with both activewear apparel and with jeans for everyday style. The material feels really good, too. It has tons of other features, like front zip pockets and a removable bib, it’s machine washable and water resistant, and it has straps inside so that you can wear it around your shoulders like a backpack and be handsfree should you take it off. This comes in 7 colors, and is available in sizes XS to XXL. See all the colors, HERE. I wear size M and I definitely recommend sizing up. I can wear sweaters under size M, but it’s snug for sure.

If that fit doesn’t sound like it’d work for you, check out some of the other Bernardo jackets, HERE. There are lots!

Or, if you’re looking for something more classic and less sporty, and something not quite as thick, this Gallery Quilted Jacket could be a good option. It is also water resistant, has a more classic feel so it would be easier to dress up, and it has good reviews!

Also, here are the water resistant lug sole boots in black!

I’m also wearing my favorite Wit & Wisdom dark wash skinny jeans, which are SUPER COMFY and STRETCHY with an elastic waistband! Find them HERE. I wear size 4.
