How to Fix a Shrunken Dress

I'd always seen these cami dresses from Old Navy and steered clear. I assumed they'd be too short plus shrink in the wash, as garments with this material tend to do from Old Navy. (Whomp whomp.)

I saw this one at thredUP when searching for pieces for my recent post with them. I loved the print on it, and I was (am) in need of a couple of printed dresses. Since thredUP listed the length of the garment, that relieved my worries about the length and I decided to try it. I'm sooooo glad I did! I had no idea what I was missing out on with a these cami dresses!

They are really lightweight and not see through (in the darker colors, at least), making them wonderful for summer. For me, the bust fit perfectly.

This style dress is a staple for Old Navy and is currently available in 12+ prints and colors.  My exact print is not available, but there is a very similar print HERE called Black Geo.

REVIEW
I bought the current version of this dress just so I could review it for yall because I LOVE the one I got from thredUP.

SIZING
I'm 5'6" and usually size S/M or 6/8 and size M fits me perfectly.  I have a smaller bust, and this dress fits me so well!  I don't have to wear a cami underneath because the top doesn't hang down when I bend over.  However, if you do not have a smaller bust, there is an elastic panel along the back (seen better on the product page HERE) to offer more room around the bust.

MATERIAL
It's lightweight and breezy, but in this dark print it's not see through.  Not sure about solid colors or lighter prints.  I do know one of the white based printed dresses has a slip built in, which is nice.

Like I mentioned, the back is an elastic panel, and there is a side zipper.

DOES IT SHRINK?
Shrinking was one of my huge hesitations about these dresses because garments in this material from Old Navy ALWAYS shrink.  You feel me?  So I tested it, and here's what happened:

Before washing, it hit just above my knees.  I hand washed and air dried it, and it shrank 2 inches, as suspected.  It measured 20.5 inches long after washing.  THEN, I steamed it, and it expanded back a whopping 2+ inches with steaming!  (A clothing steamer like THIS.)

If you don't want to deal with steaming or anything, try ordering your same size but in Tall instead of Regular sizing.  The armholes might be a little lower, but remember that Old Navy offers free return shipping now, so you can order several sizes and return them for free.  However, I find that this material tends to wrinkle and often requires steaming anyway, so it's nice to know I can fix the length issues while I'm getting out wrinkles.

If anyone's wondering about steaming clothes, I love it!  I hateeeee ironing and never, ever did it.  I'm the kind of person that would take a flat iron and smooth out a wrinkle over pulling out an iron and an ironing board.  Haha!  But I find a steamer much more convenient, way less of a hassle, and actually pretty therapeutic.
