Using Accessories to Pull an Outfit Together (with Nickel and Suede)

I remember when I first realized an accessory could make or break an outfit.  I still marvel at how such tiny additions can make a plain outfit look more polished.

Many of you have asked if there are alternatives to statement necklaces that can still pull an outfit together, and the answer is YES!  Pulling together an outfit can be as simple as throwing on some earrings or a cuff!  Today I'm illustrating how in TWO looks: one casual and one slightly dressier.

On the left above is a striped dress with flip flops.  Pretty drab on its own, right?  However, simply adding big earrings and a leather cuff turns it into a relaxed, pulled together look.

The earrings and cuff are from a shop I've been eyeing recently called Nickel & Suede.  I absolutely love how the pieces are simple but still make a statement.  I also love that they really kick up an outfit while still being totally casual.

I was caught by the many statement earrings and cute cuffs at Nickel & Suede.  Though the pieces I'm wearing in this casual look are all tan, Nickel & Suede also has amazing colors like turquoise, light pink, gold, silver, and a ton more.

But the best part?  These are actually leather earrings.  Why is that amazing?  Well, I used to wear huge earrings every single day years ago, but it was annoying to wear them because they were often heavy, or if they were light they looked kind of cheap.  Because Nickel & Suede earrings are made of leather, they are super lightweight and comfortable to wear!

Shop Outfit #1:
Dress: Target (similar H&M, similar Target, similar Old Navy)
Bag: c/o Sole Society (exact)
Sandals: Target (exact)
Earrings: c/o Nickel & Suede (exact)
Cuff: c/o Nickel & Suede (exact)

You can also dress up an outfit with essentially the same kinds of jewelry.  On the left above is nothing special.  Jeans, solid top, flip flops--blah.  On the right I added pumps and white statement earrings and a white cuff from Nickel & Suede for a slightly dressy look.

It only takes two seconds to throw on some earrings or a cuff, and it can make a tremendous difference!  They are fantastic alternatives to statement necklaces, scarves, or belts.  And because these are lightweight leather earrings and the cuff is a really soft leather I still feel super comfortable.

Shop Outfit #2:
Top: Nordstrom (exact--really lightweight, great for summer)
Jeans: Target (similar--under $8!)
Pumps: Nine West c/o Zappos (exact in other colors)
Earrings: c/o Nickel & Suede (exact)
Cuff: c/o Nickel & Suede (exact)
Bag: DSW

Easy enough, right?

Big thanks to Nickel & Suede for partnering on this post!
All opinions are 100% honest.  You really need to check out this shop!

Like it how you changed your outfits successful with the perfect matching accessoieres. I think a nice bag makes an outfit immediately better. At work I'm mostly only sad that I can't wear the bag during the complete day and therefore the outfit isn't complete :)

  3. What a great post! Just yesterday I wanted to elevate an outfit but a statement necklace made no sense because I was wearing a graphic tee and it was just too much. I'll have to try big earrings and a handbag next time :)

  5. I love these posts - you do a great job of showing the difference a few touches can make! I added a stack of bracelets and a belt (although I know belts aren't part of your point today) to my sundress and denim vest today, and it made a huge difference!

  7. I am very guilty of this. Bracelets usually bother me because they make noise on my desk and clang around. Leather is a great idea, and goes with practically everything. I'm great at picking out a necklace and earrings, but when they are dainty, something more is needed. Thanks for the ideas.

  11. Cute as usual! You did a great job showing how accessories instantly turn basic pieces into an "outfit". I know I need to get some new accessories; I wear my two statement necklaces a lot, but I need some fun earrings, and maybe a cuff, too. I will check out that website you recommended.
