The Secret to Wearing Shorts When You Fear Them

I used to fear shorts for years, but the older I got the less I cared which somehow helped me keep trying shorts.  Eventually I found shorts that didn't cut off my circulation.  If you feel me on that, these floral shorts from Old Navy are fantastic!  A glorious 5" long and very roomy in the waist and leg.  I'm wearing size 6.

Besides roomy shorts, you know what else helps lessen the fear of shorts?  Nude wedges.  No joke.  They elongate a leg line sooooo deceptively.  Totally cheating in the most awesome way.  I got these from Target like 3+ years ago and have worn them a whole heck of a lot!  (See the ways HERE.)  And when I feel like every other shoe cuts off my leg line I just pop these babies on and feel alright again.

Will you be wearing printed shorts once the weather permits?

  1. I have blogged about some of these shorts myself and I own quite a few pairs. Printed shorts are perfect for summer!

  2. Those shorts are so cute! I love them. Old Navy always has the best shorts. I love them because they aren't SUPER short like a lot of the other ones I see in stores. And not so tight which is also nice.

  3. Old Navy shorts are the only shorts that fit my thick thighs without me having to buy 5 sizes up and alter the waist. Love them. Wedges and a little self tanner are a good way to make me feel really confident in shorts.

Oh that's very cute and comfy! I normally stay away from shorts, but these sound right up my alley!

  6. I bought #4 during the last big J. Crew Factory sale (for $9!) and I'm super excited about them. Thanks for the floral shorts inspiration :) And yes - nude wedges are the greatest cheat ;)

  7. Very pretty! Might have to try Old Navy shorts now; most shorts look so unflattering on my thighs!

  8. When I was in my teens, I thought shorts were only made with either a 2" inseam or 10" inseam. I thought that meant shorts weren't made for me. Then I discovered Old Navy's shorts and all has been right with the world until last year when they longer fit my thighs. But ultimately I think the secret it to find ones that aren't tight on the thighs. It might take some looking, but it's worth it.

  9. Agreed! Shorts that aren't tight around your legs make all the difference! I have to admit that I still don't love my legs in shorts but I'm working on wearing them proudly! These shorts are so pretty and fun!

  10. I just bought those! They are so perfect! Great length and actually not skin tight on my thighs! Finally some modest, comfortable shorts for us classy ladies.

  11. While I'm still more of a skirts girl than shorts, the J.Crew 7 inch chinos are my friends. I can roll them up or leave them down. It's nice to finally have some you like because there are some days where it's too hot for anything else.

  12. 5" shorts are the best! Target usually has some nice ones as well and I don't see the point in paying more for casual clothing. I spent years refusing to wear shorts but finally was just like, "I'm a grown woman, people know I have legs, they can tell I'm chunky from what the rest of my body looks like, it's hot, they can see my chunky legs."

  13. Wore those exact Old Navy shorts for three days at Disney World last week. (We had a washer/dryer!) My daughter didn't like them at the start of the trip (like why did you buy THOSE shorts?) By the end of the week, she was a fan. So many ways to wear them with neutrals, brights or pastels. Great buy and wonderful fit. Truly a great wardrobe expander. Thanks for the tip. Packed your spring list and had many great outfits. Thanks!

  14. I like the florals but I only wear shorts that are knee length or longer (capris). Usually florals that.long look wonky. So I will wear my florals in skirts. Now to find some skirts that are knee length in great colors like the shorts you featured.

  15. I've only in recent years become a fan of shorts too and was actually thinking about how I "need" to find me a pair of navy blue ones! I love your printed ones too though :) xo

  16. Love these shorts! Really great picks! Xo

  17. Those look great on you! I recently bought the linen-blend shorts from Old Navy, even though they have only a 3 1/2 inch inseam, but I don't feel like they're too short. It may be because I live in Hawaii and that's actually generous for what most people wear here! ;-) Or because I'm pregnant and wearing them very low on my hips. I still think I'm more of a skirt person, but I feel like sometimes shorts are a good thing. Love them with the nude wedges!!!

Like you I haven't been that fond of wearing shorts. I would go for a pair of floral shorts, they are very flattering.

  19. I was pretty proud of myself for ordering shorts that aren't jeans! (Mint green and grey). I think I'm working up to printed ones!

  20. I live in shorts from May through September... I live in Las Vegas. I have never felt that they look that fantastic, but ultimately I decided that I need to be comfortable. I like the nude wedges idea, I've always thought wearing anything with a heel of sorts with shorts would make me look weird, like I was trying too hard or something. But I'm encouraged because it looks great and effortless on you!

  22. I still feel like my legs are the issue, not the shorts. But maybe this summer I'll give it a try (again?). Thank you for the inspiration :)

  23. Very cute shorts! I am actually looking for some floral shorts. I tried on option 2 (from Target) over the weekend, and the 3-inch inseam made them a no-go. I'll have to try the Old Navy ones!

  24. NINE dollars?! That's amazing! They look super comfy. Is that true?

  25. I love these floral shorts! I have been avoiding shorts recently and never thought to pair them with wedges! Thanks for the tips! Susan

  26. These are really cute on you! I actually have the fear of shorts!

    ReplyDelete
  27. They are!! The material is the perfect thickness/shape to make me feel like they flatter my figure.

  28. So super cute! Love the wedges trick and I'm definitely going to try it :)

  29. I have finally decided to jump on the patterned short train but all the ones I've liked have been 3-in inseams, which isn't fair to the rest of us who prefer a longer short. I'll have to check out Old Navy again!

  30. I'm having a hard time finding any shorts in a size 0. I'm 5' too and very skinny.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Try J.Crew Factory! They have sales often, lotsssss of shorts options, and go down to size 00.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm loving the top! Do you have a product code that you could share please? Maybe they could look it up in store. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Ashley! The top is nearly 2 years old so I doubt they have it anymore. Sorry!

  34. Cute look. 5 inch shorts are the way to go! I have to size up, you know, thighs. ha ha

  35. I just ordered a few pairs of shorts from LOFT with a 6" inseam, and I'm hoping they work out for me okay. Shorts are so tricky for me, so honestly, in the last couple of years, I've tended to chop the legs off some old jeans and just hem them into shorts that are my favorite length. It's worked pretty well at this point, ha!

    ReplyDelete
  36. You're a genius with cutting off the legs of old jeans and hemming them to the perfect length shorts. GENIUS.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just gave up on shorts a year or so ago! Casual skirts and dresses keep me even cooler and I find them much more comfortable (with more flattering as a bonus). But you look fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I too have this irrational fear about how my legs look in shorts. But, you are right, as I've gotten older, I don't really care! But, they must be at least 5'' long, for sure! And these are super cute!

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's been the only way I've survived the summers, haha! I got the shorts from LOFT today and they all looked terrible on me - dang it! I may wind up going to the thrift store and buying some pants and making them into shorts again, haha.

  40. Can you share the exact link for the bag?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi! Unfortunately this bag is nearly a year old, otherwise I would of course link to the exact one. Sorry!
