Fancy Casual for a Bridal Shower

Does anyone else have long debates with themself about what to wear to things like baby showers and bridal showers?  I totally do.  I've somehow inferred from magazines and whatnot that bridal showers are occasions you need to dress up for.  A lot.  You know, when you get your fancy on.

WELLLLL, that's not usually the MO of most showers *I* attend.  While they're usually pretty darn casual, I don't want to find myself in that awkward moment that oops, this one wasn't that casual after all!  So when I'm deciding on an outfit I inevitably enter the struggle of not wanting to be too overdressed or too underdressed.  What to do, what to do?!  Gotta love them first world problems.  But, #thestruggleisreal!

So, I most often aim for a happy medium--fancy casual.  Or casual with a touch of girly.  Whatever you want to call it, it's this outfit.

I paired a totally casual top half with a pretty little feminine skirt and pumps for a fancy casual look that I wore to a bridal shower a couple weekends ago.  I'm excited to pair this skirt with other tees for more everyday looks (like the metallic dot tee I ended up keeping), and with some nicer blouses in case I ever do have dressier occasions!

*P.S. The skirt comes in 5 different colors, and you can get 25% off your order until 3/18 with code PMT25!

Anyone else a huge fan of fancy casual?  It's my safety zone!

  3. This is a perfect shower look! I had a really hard time dressing for my own showers, and I always have the same problem for friend's showers too! I love the mix of the denim jacket with that skirt - so cute!

  5. Love this outfit! Soft and feminine without being too girly. Super cute.

  6. I really love your blog. I'm about to have my 4th and last baby. I am not very stylish and I haven't really bought new clothes for myself in 7 years. Once I lose the baby weight I'm looking forward to throwing away everything I own and starting fresh ... with style this time. Your ideas have been very helpful in directing me to the type of clothing I should be looking for.

  7. The skirt and top go so well together! would have never tried it out myself! I will be shifting soon to begin my PhD and will follow your guide!

  8. That skirt is so feminine and beautiful! Can I ask how tall you are? I feel like it'd hit me at an odd spot below my knees because I'm usually so short.

1- Absolutely love this outfit and already added to my stylebook app.
2- Your hair look fabulous! It's worth saying twice actually. Your hair looks FAB!!!

  10. I never know what to wear to showers either! Pinterest, magazines, and tv always make them to be dressy affairs but that's not the kind I typically attend! Usually a lot of group texts between my sisters and myself before hand! I like this nice inbetween!

  11. fancy casual, I like it! This is great to wear to an easy going shower. The pink is adorable and the jean jacket makes it not so dressy.

  12. I totally know what you mean! My sisters recently had a joint baby shower, and I was so stumped on what to wear! I ended up wearing mint jeans + a striped top + a blazer. I really like this look--definitely saving this when a similar occasion arises in the future!

  13. I adore your skirt and your hair. You look impeccable!

  14. Very cute! Is the skirt two-toned? I can't tell from the photo if it becomes sort of lavender at the bottom, or maybe the lining is a lot shorter than the skirt...?

  15. Thanks, Stephanie! It's not two-toned. The lining is shorter.

  16. Wow, thank you so much! Totally encouraged!

  17. So glad to hear that, K! Congrats on baby #4, and good luck with everything!

  18. I am the same way! I cannot stand being under-dressed so I always try to find a way to look fancier casual. lol! That skirt is so cute and paired with that jean jacket it because just a little more casual. I think you paired this look perfectly!

  19. Thank you for the inspiration once again! You are beautiful.

I'm probably too old for this look at 55, but that didn't stop me from ordering the skirt in black (thanks for the discount code!) and the striped top from Romwe. Just hoping the skirt comes somewhere near my knees, as I'm 5'9"! I may add a lining that is closer to the length of the skirt. I'll probably pair this with a black knit blazer instead of the jean jacket, but I think it will be a perfect date or church outfit. I would also dress up the skirt for evening or a wedding with dressy or sparkly top. In spite of the difference in our life stages, I enjoy your posts so much and get so many great ideas, even when I don't feel I can pull off an identical look.

  24. That is AWESOME! Such good modifications. I love that you are able to take an idea and adapt it to what works for your style and lifestyle!
