Shopping Help: Completer Pieces for Spring

Ain't no secret that I LOVE "completer pieces."  These are things like light jackets, cardigans, blazers, and vests that, when thrown on, immediately help to "complete" a look.  You can be wearing a striped tee and jeans, but once you throw a cargo jacket over it, for example, the look gets instantly pulled together.

I love spring (and fall) for this reason, because if you haven't noticed, I absolutely love to wear completer pieces.

Today I've rounded up a bunch that don't even include blazers or cardigans.  There are so many great pieces out there!

All are from Old Navy, Target, Kohl's, and Forever 21.

Denim Jackets:  Option 1  |  Option 2  |  Option 3
These go with sooooo many things, but they're particularly awesome with dresses and skirts.  A plain tee, a maxi skirt, and a denim jacket?  Easy peasy and so pulled together.

I have a medium wash one (see ways I've worn it HERE), but I would also like a lighter one like Option 1 or 2.  And #1 on sale today!

Draped:  Option 4  |  Option 5  |  Option 6
These are great because they have the shape of a moto jacket, but they are knit so they're super soft and flexible!  Much better than wearing a hoodie.

Note: Option 3 looks like a cardigan, but it's actually sweatshirt material.

Cargo:  Option 7  |  Option 8  |  Option 9
See the ways I've worn mine HERE.  After my cognac faux leather jacket, this might be my most worn completer piece!  I love how #7 comes with the stripes!

Hooded: Option 10  |  Option 11  |  Option 12
These are cargo-like jackets that are different in two ways: 1) they're not the typical army green, and 2) they all have hoods.  Gives them an even more casual vibe.

Faux Leather:  Option 13  |  Option 14  |  Option 15
Don't be scared of leather looking too "hard."  There are really sophisticated as well as casual and friendly ways to do a leather jacket, and color has a lot to do with it.  I love the soft color of #13, and the richness of #15.  See how I've worn my cognac leather jacket HERE.

What's your favorite "completer piece" to wear in the spring?  My top three are: cognac leather jacket, cargo jacket, and denim jacket!

  1. I really want a cargo jacket! Great picks!

  2. My sister and I have had the hardest time trying to find a style blog for average sized women (I hope this doesn't offend you). We've only been able to find super petite gals or plus sized blogs, which is helpful, but still makes it difficult to visualize what we may look like in an outfit. Your style fits us and we are happy to have found you. Thanks in advance for all the fashion advice and we look forward to your future posts!

I love completer pieces for my hour glass figure. All these shown are fabulous and I would add kimonos and vests to the list for Spring going into Summer too.

  4. I have two jean jackets and two pleather that I rotate. I want a white blazer or jacket for Spring. I may also get a couple kimonos!

  5. "Completer pieces" reminds me to Stacy and Clinton of WNTW ... miss that show! Anyway, great selection! Would love it if you'd link up with FUN FASHION FRIDAY (link up open all day today too!) ... and share these cool picks.

  6. You are so great at putting these posts together! I think I'm drawn more toward the denim jacket for spring, but I really like the idea of a colorful faux leather jacket.

  7. I LOVE completer pieces, too! I feel sloppy without them. My favorite kind would probably be a denim jacket, or a blazer.

  8. Love these...perhaps I could work on decreasing my dependence on cardigans?....nah!!
Have you seen any cargo vests in your shopping travels around the Internet? Love yours and can't seem to find one anymore.

I just bought the looped drapey cardigan from F21 (#5) and it is GORGEOUS. It is cozy and chic and looks much more expensive than it is.

I've been looking for a cognac leather jacket and #14 looks like a great option (at just the right price) -- thanks for a great roundup!

  10. I have been OBSESSED with Option #4 for weeks. Who would have thought Old Navy was a paradigm of style?

  11. I hope you ARE having fun building a new wardrobe! Good luck with everything. :)

  12. I almost bought that draped jacket from Old Navy (#4), but I was so worried it wouldn't work for me so I chickened out and used my rewards on some new pairs of leggings, a tee, and a pair of yoga pants, haha. I am with you on completer pieces, though - they're the greatest way to expand your wardrobe!

  13. Hi!
What an awesome blog! Thanks for putting this together. So, I really like looking at outfits like the chic jean jacket/pleated skirt combo, but I think I'm really most comfy in jeans and a pinstripe top. Any ideas on how I can really dress that up? I only ever have date nights every now and then, so I have chic outfits for those occasions, but it's the everyday style that I'm struggling with. Help! Especially with summer coming. Ahh!

  14. OMG, thanks for that! I was REALLY surprised to check the outfits pinned to Pinterest and realize they all had pretty much the same style! This is truly remarkable! I am in desperate need to know me better to dress better. But this post alone has been incredibly helpful! Thanks again!
