Herringbone Quilted Vest Four Ways

That J.Crew quilted vest that's all over the internet.  You know the one I'm talking about?  This one that's a million dollars.  Okay, it's really $108, but that is still much more than I'm willing to pay for a vest.

I've wanted a vest like that for years, even before I knew the J.Crew one existed.  But for one reason or another I never pulled the trigger, whether it was because it didn't fit me, the price wasn't right, or other reasons.  There's a much cheaper one at Old Navy right now (see HERE) that I'll probably scope out and wait for a sale if it looks good on me.

Until then I wanted to play with it to get my creative juices flowing.  So, here's a One Piece Many Ways ode to the ever popular herringbone quilted vest.  As it turns out, there's about a billion ways to wear a herringbone vest, so there's not really rhyme or reason to the outfits in this post.  Just me playing with clothes and combos.

Random note, as you can see I didn't bother much with trying to mix up the footwear because...boots.  *insert googly eyes*

(Warning, the riding boots are far more expensive than what I typically feature here.  I was shopping online for boots today and got excited about them, so they made their way into this post.  I will be trying these boots in real life, along with a few others I found today, and I'll share about them in a future post!)

Outfit 1 - Stripes
I really love a vest of any kind paired with a long sleeved stripe tee.  I chose black jeans over regular blue jeans to streamline the look, and added cognac boots for a little contrast.  I topped it off with a statement necklace, but a chunky scarf of any color (maroon, mustard, orange, green--really anything) would be fun!

Shop Outfit 1:
Vest: J.Crew Factory (exact, Old Navy version)
Jeans: LOFT
Boots: Macy's (option 2)
Necklace: Forever 21

Outfit 2 - Plaid & Layers
You could wear the outfit with only the plaid shirt, or you can add a pullover for extra layers.  I don't know that I'd ever need that many layers in San Diego, but it's fun to pretend with these posts.  Anyway, finish the look with a sparkly little gemstone necklace to give this casual outfit a touch of polish.

Shop Outfit #2:
Vest: J.Crew Factory (exactOld Navy version)
Sweater: Target
Top: Old Navy
Jeans: LOFT
Boots: Macy's (option 2)
Necklace: Forever 21

Outfit 3 - Button Up Shirt
I've seen vests often paired with plaid tops, but a polka dot one is fun too.  I love maroon with grey, black and cognac for fall!

Vest: J.Crew Factory (exactOld Navy version)
Top: Old Navy
Jeans: LOFT
Boots: Forever 21

Outfit 4 - Dress
Let's not forget that you can wear a vest over a dress!  Wear it over a solid dress, or for more visual interest find a dress with a pattern, like stripes or like this polka dot sweater dress.  I included a white button up that you could layer under the dress for more dimension as well as a bit more warmth.  You could also add a touch of color with a statement necklace or a scarf.

Vest: J.Crew Factory (exactOld Navy version)
Top: Old Navy
Dress: Old Navy
Boots: Macy's (option 2)
Necklace: Forever 21

Like I said, if I can find the Old Navy version of this vest in store I'll give it a try.  However, I've ordered the Frost Free Quilted Vest to try, intending to wear it more casually when I need to go on retreats for work.  We'll see how that works out as well.

Will you be wearing a vest this fall?

  1. All so cute! I love it with the striped top. Just a heads up (don't know if it's still available or not), I saw this vest on Groopdealz the other day for cheap!

  3. I've never heard of groopdealz.

  4. I don't recommend the Old Navy version. The fabric is quite itchy against the skin. Just my $0.02.

  5. You have to join the site (free) to see the deals and purchase, but they have a variety of stuff. It seems like they're usually just helping promote good deals from smaller independent vendors. http://www.groopdealz.com/deal/back-by-popular-demand-designer-herringbone-puffer-vest/33005

  6. Cute ensembles! I'm a sucker for a striped top and vest combo, my go to outfit when I can't be bothered thinking about what I'm going to wear. Any excuse to wear stripes really.

  8. So, I had totally got so excited when I found "the vest" I had seen everywhere at J. Crew Factory and then saw it was $108 - I'm with you too much, but now seeing all the cute ways I could wear it have me reconsidering :) Thanks for the ideas!

  9. I ordered it too!! I hope it works for us both! And I used a 10% off code right before it expired. :D

  11. I tried them and 5-ish other pairs on yesterday. They were the winners BUT I'm still not 100% sold on the color. My old ones were a cognac with a little red which I LOVED. I thought these would be like that from pics but they're more muted. Can't decide if I should keep them and get used to it or keep looking. I can't find any other boots that are like my old ones though!

  12. If you can live without the black ticking for the pockets, and you don't mind your vest being a little more puffy, there is a version very similar looking on Walmart.com. Here is the link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Women-s-Puffer-Vest/35743691
It's the khaki Silvio pattern and the stripes are black and very light beige. I have that vest and I get asked all the time where I got it, and as a bonus it's only $10.88. However, it's probably a bit more sportier than the vest you mention on groupdealz. I don't think it would look that good over a dress. But if you are a mom looking to shish up your outfit a bit, it looks cute and keeps you warm.

  13. I so love this vest, but I'm just worried it'll be "out" next year. I really like the Old Navy one, though.... hmmmm. We'll have to see how much my Gap rewards are this month and maybe I can get it for free or almost free.

  14. I really like the Old Navy one too, but I've really come to like the black piping on the J.Crew version. So, when someone told us about the Groopdealz J.Crew knockoff for roughly the same price as Old Navy (actually, cheaper) I was up for giving it a shot!

I guess I'm not worried about it being "out" next year because I've wanted a grey herringbone type vest every fall/winter for a few years! The only reason I'm getting it now is because since it IS popular now, there are more options for me to choose from.

I don't think the Old Nay one would go out of style though. You can't really go wrong with a grey vest like that, in my opinion.

  15. I was lucky enough to get this vest on sale (after J.Crew Factory cancelled my order last year!) and it was worth the $100...at least to me. I've already worn it at least 5 times, I'm obsessed! Thanks for even more ideas!

  16. I would NEVER have considered getting one of those puffy vests... until now... I'm a twiggy girl with curves (oxymoron, but true) and I feel like adding a general "poof" to my torso will just about kill my shape. I really like the combos that you put together and I think I'll have to run to the store and at least try it on again!

  17. I totally know very thin women with curves. Some puffy vests are slimmer than others. Not sure how the Old Navy one fares, but good luck!

has someone gotten the groopdealz vest? how does it run??

  19. I don't think they ship until late November. :( But I think people on Groopdealz's Facebook page are talking about it, whoever got it from the last time it was sold.

  20. I love the idea of the vest over the dress-I have a blue quilted vest I'm excited about wearing new ways and I will have to figure out which of my dresses it goes best with. I also fully support wearing boots for all of these outfits-so glad it's getting cooler in SD!

  21. The ON vest is super thick and heavy. I returned it after ordering online.

  22. Yes! I've noticed that vest on Pinterest numerous times, it's weird how that happens! the internet can be a small world!

  23. I'm glad you found one that hit the J Crew mark, then! Yay! I do love herringbone. I think I may end up with the Old Navy one. :)

  24. I just purchased this vest, so thank you for the outfit tips! I love it with the dress!! But that burgundy is just my favorite color this season! Have a great week! Susan

  25. Audrey, I just bought the Naturalizer boots you featured here at Famous Footwear for $90 (had a 20% off coupon). Just fyi!

  26. Whoa!!!! That's amazing! I tried them at Macy's and took them home for further evaluation, but the color is a little more muted than I want. They are pretty comfy though, so I'm bummed and still trying to see if they'll work! (I don't think they will, but it's taking me a while to let go cuz otherwise I love them.) I hope they work out for you--especially at that deal!

  27. Found another J. Crew vest look alike at a boutique. Still pricey at $58 but better than $108! http://www.catchbliss.com/melina-vest/

  28. That vest is everywhere! I kind of want one but our Old Navy is out of the dupe and the J.Crew version is no bueno for my wallet.
