Shopping Help: Knee Length Skirts

Can someone tell me why it seems pretty much impossible to find knee-length skirts?  Then tack on the word "affordable" and I feel like giving up on the world.  (Dramatic much?)

Since I perpetually have my eye out for knee length skirts (or at least near my knees!) I put together a roundup of some that are out right now.

There's a little left of summer before turning the corner to fall, but don't worry--you can pair almost any skirt with tights and boots for fall looks!

Neutral Pencil Skirts:  Option 1  |  Option 2  |  Option 3
All in neutral colors, but not plain by any means!  Option 1 is seersucker with a tiny neon strip to elevate it.  Option 2 is a pretty navy eyelet that also comes in black.  Option 3 is a geometric print with a jacquard texture.  All of these can easily be worn now, into the fall, and into the winter given their coloring.

Feminine Pencil Skirts:  Option 4  |  Option 5  |  Option 6
These have more feminine details like floral prints, pinks, or an eyelet skirt that's in white rather than dark colors like navy and black.  Florals aren't just for spring and summer.  Even bright ones can be paired with tights and boots in the fall.

Solid A-line:  Option 7  |  Option 8  |  Option 9
Since not everyone is a fan of pencil skirts I was glad to have found some solid knee-length, non-pencil skirt options.  Rotate through these with your patterned tops!

Notes: #7 comes in mint and black.

Patterns & Pleats:  Option 10  |  Option 11  |  Option 12
Some more pleated skirts in great prints.  I love all three of these, and they are all under $30!

Note: #11 comes in another pattern and two solids.  Also currently 25% off with code ONSAVENOW.

Anyone else have a hard time finding knee length skirts, or is it just me?

  1. not just you audrey. that's the story of my life: finding skirts, shorts and dresses that hit at my knees. not super tall(5' 6 1/2") but long legs from my dad's side.

  2. Not just in America! It's all mini skirts and mini shorts! I had a really hard time finding approriate shorts for summer.

  3. I love the a-line skirts you've picked. I feel ya on the length. It's like, i'm 28 not 21. I have an 8 and a 6 year old. Minis are not for me right now.

  4. yay, i was looking at pencil skirts earlier this afternoon! i feel like i have chubby-looking knees (weird, i know) so finding knee-length skirts is always on my to do list. it's not like i've got long legs though, so you think it'd be easier!! i did go on ModCloth after looking at Option 9, and found another skirt that's almost the exact same style in a light grey...aaand i bought it. thanks for the idea!! :D

  5. Option 7 is so cute, but how would you style it?! I feel like I would be lost in figuring out how to style something with that much texture! (Also, I'm sad option 3 is sold out in my size online! I may have to see if they have it in my local store!)

  6. I have Option 7! Bought it when I was early along in pregnancy cuz I couldn't resist! I did a mix and match post with it. Don't worry about the texture! It doesn't really change much.

  7. I really want option 3 as well! But - it's not sold in stores, according to the website.

  8. Knee length skirts are nearly non existent and have been as long as I remember. There's the option of hemming a longer skirt. That would work on some styles. Plus you can gain a couple of inches of hem on a short skirt by ordering it in "tall" even if you're not. I think JCPenney even has "Ultra Tall." I really don't understand this gap in the market. A skirt that hits mid knee or just grazes the bottom of the knee is the most flattering length for nearly every leg shape. I'm sure lots of us would by knee length skirts if only we could.

  9. Beautiful skirts! I wear knee length all the time at work - great staple items. Love #6 especially!

  10. I don't know if you've ever heard of DownEast Basics, but they only sell knee-length anything, and it's really awesome! And! They're super affordable. It's like the opposite of a double whammy.

  11. I agree that knee length is hard to find--these are great picks, Audrey! =)

I hope you have a great weekend!

  12. Yes...I teach elementary music, which means I do a lot of walking around short people sitting on the floor. Short skirts are not my friend! Pants are usually overkill on the heat issue (I'm in Florida), so I usually do a lot of maxi skirts for work, but knee-length skirts are a wonderful thing for mixing up the look a little. Looks like I need to do some back-to-school shopping! I love the shape of #9: reminds me of a vintage skirt I had a few years back.

  13. Yes! And I've noticed lately that stores and websites are calling knee-length skirts midi skirts, which is very strange. It's like they're trying to make the mid-thigh skirt the new normal skirt. This is why thrift stores are where so much of my clothing comes from.

  14. Same here. Truth is, I really wonder how a knee length skirt purchased becomes above or below knee when I actually want to wear them out. A friend of mine then advised that I take a correct measurement of my waist to knee length before going to shop and then using that as a yardstick. So far, that has helped.

  15. Knee length skirts are so hard to find! I like mine to at least hit the top of my knee cap, and I can't tell you how many shopping trips have ended in frustration. I do a little sewing, and I usually have to add an inch or two to most of my patterns, too.

  16. I think it depends on where you look. I've seen a few at Ann Taylor and at Loft, though.

  17. I need knee length skirts with belt loops! Why are those so hard to find? Thanks for all the suggestions though.

  18. I feel ya! I'm tall, so it's extra hard, but there seems to be a shortage all around!

  19. I'm so short, I wish I could wear knee length skirts that do not look like they are ankle length. The stripe pattern is adorable!

  20. I just ordered that floral skirt from ON last night and cant wait to get it! I have trouble finding knee length skirts too! I have ordered several from Shelley Bee Originals on Etsy and love them. She will custom make them to fit you. That seems to be the best bet for me! Thanks for this great post Alison! Susan

  21. Oops I said Alison and meant Audrey;) It is super early this morning!! :) Susan

  22. Haha no worries! I hope that skirt works out for you. :)

  23. I have skirt #1 and I love it! I'm totally gushing over #6.
