Dress Up a Comfy T-shirt Dress

If ever I was glad to have learned to remix my wardrobe it'd be during this pregnancy.  I have roughly 5 1/2 weeks left until our due date (say wuuuuuut?!) and haven't wanted or needed to buy a new, large maternity wardrobe thanks to learning how to remix.  That, and being okay with wearing the same outfit a million times.  But, who's counting?

We've had several special occasions during the time I've been pregnant.  Namely 3 weddings and 3 rehearsal dinners to go along with them.  Plus squeezing in as many date nights as we can before the baby comes, birthday celebrations, engagements, and all sorts of other life stuff to dress up for.  Even though I'm pretty okay with repeating outfits 5+ times (like, really) when it comes to special occasions, I try to limit the repeating to 2-3 times, especially when those occasions involve many of the same people.

We've got a rehearsal dinner and an engagement party coming up.  I was going to wear the same thing to both of them until I realized I could take this super comfy t-shirt dress and dress it up for one of them.  Maybe it's a no-brainer for you to dress up a t-shirt dress (normally I think CASUAL), but it was an epiphany to me, and it's refreshing to have a new outfit on hand!

Tomorrow I'll show side-by-sides of a casual look with this one.

  1. Yay for the solid version of this amazing dress! Definitely a "what are you doing here?" and "you're coming home with me NOW" moment. The leather gives it such a flair and edge. Black really makes it look fancy!

  3. Oh my goodness! I am wearing this very dress in black in my office as we speak! I dressed it up with a mint and silver printed scarf, silver belt and black flats! Yay for work attire that feels like pajamas!

  5. I was just thinking about ways to dress up a t-shirt dress this morning and pop on over to here, and there is your post! I was wondering, could a t-shirt dress be transitioned to winter with leggings and a cardigan or something similar over it? If so... I may need to buy a couple. Thanks for the help! Also, you look very pretty! :)

  11. Woohoo! I could definitely see it as office wear too. I wish my store had the black one! I probably would have swooped that up as well. :D

  13. What a coincidence!

I think you can transition almost any dress into colder weather with leggings and a cardigan. Depending on how cold it is, you might need some more layers underneath it all too.

Check out this post on doing that: http://www.puttingmetogether.com/2014/02/how-to-wear-dress-in-multiple-seasons.html

  16. Count down is on! I've been struggling dressing my pregnant body now that it's hot out. I want to wear shorts all the time but it's no good for the office!

  17. I really love this look! I just got a comfy red skater dress from ThredUp, and I might try pairing it with a moto jacket and a necklace like this for our next date night. Thanks for the inspiration!

  18. I want to wear shorts all the time too! Have you found any good maternity skirts that are knee-length?

  20. Love!!! It really doesn't look like a t-shirt dress any more when you layer this stuff on - it looks like it was meant to be for an occasion. (Plus comfy at the same time.) I definitely went through this more repeats than normal thing for occasions when I was pregnant (and so unhelpful when they're all with the same people), but it's a regular life thing too - there's only so many "occasion" type dresses I can have in my closet as a work-from-home mom, and I try to avoid the temptation to buy new things when occasions come up... so always awesome to find ways to dress up the everyday stuff.

  21. Do you wear any shapewear under t shirt dresses? I feel like I always have bra / panty lines

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't wear shapewear, but I wear a cami under most things which helps with bra lines, and I almost always wear a slip under any dress.

  24. Is the tshirt dress you have on maternity? All of the options to shop are non maternity and I just want to make sure it would fit before buying online. Since I'm just a few weeks behind you I'm using all of your pregnancy fashion tips :) thanks!!

  25. No, it's not maternity. If I'm wearing maternity I'll usually list it as "Target Maternity" or something. But I don't know if the ones I linked would fit you because I haven't tried those on personally.
