Mix and Match: Floral Top and Light Colored Shorts

When I first saw this floral top at Old Navy I had mixed feelings about it.  I was worried it might be a little too tropical and maybe a little too busy for my (and most of your) tastes.  I don't think it's something I'd normally pick for myself right off the batt, but after playing around with it I'm pretty on board with it!

I found this pair of light pink (or peachy?) shorts to be a great addition for a summer wardrobe.  Last week I featured bright green shorts for "colored shorts," but pastels count too!  They might even be easier to wear if you're still not sure how you feel about color.

Everything is under $30 (I think) and all but one are from Old Navy, Target, Forever 21, Kohl's, and JCPenney.  The usual suspects.  OH, and Old Navy is having a 30% off sale

Outfit 1 - Dressed Up Shorts
The first look is a simple way to dress up shorts.  I love the idea of a blazer and wedges with shorts!  I hadn't ever thought about dressing up shorts until reading style blogs.  In my mind, shorts were always for casual outfits, usually with a t-shirt and sandals.  But, pair them with a sleek wedge, some jewelry, and a small bag and you've got a great outfit for a casual-but-dressed-up time out--just my style!

I kept the palette light with this great light striped blazer and a simple white tee.  (Gotta love Everlane tees!)  The blazer provides it some contrast, pattern, and a light layer if you need it, but the tee with the jewelry works on its own too.

Outfit 2 - Polished Casual
I did another look with shorts that was casual, but polished.  Still not what I typically thought of shorts, like I mentioned above.  A button up with shorts?  I never would have done that before style blogs, but I now love the look!

I paired it with a faded light wash denim jacket and a cool textured (and pretty dang inexpensive) tote for a day out and about.  And I couldn't choose between shoes!  A brown cutout flat is a more tame choice, but I love that it has cutout detailing to set it apart from your standard neutral flat.  Or of course I love a pop color in the shoes, so I couldn't resist showing the red flats!

Outfit 3 - Office
And here's how you can take the busy floral top and wear it to the office!  I mixed neutral accessories with a fun purple pencil skirt.  It keeps the outfit playful without being overboard considering the big print in the top.  I LOVE the color of the skirt, and I especially love it with navy!

Anyone else tend to think shorts should always be paired casually with a t-shirt, or was it just me?  :)

  1. Love the first outfit the best. I'm not the biggest floral fan, although I do like how you styled it. I agree shorts always look great with a t-shirt.

  2. Hoping H&M has this bag in their store..headed there now!

  3. Love the fuscia skirt and the shorts! I need some more shorts. I wore jeans all weekend the high yesterday was 93. Ugh.

  4. I agree. I'm not sure I would immediately reach for that shirt, but after looking at the remixes, I think it's a great choice.

  5. I've been following your blog for a couple years now, and I love what you do! Out of all the fashion blogs I've seen, yours is the most professional, and yet down-to-earth. I've gotten a lot of my style from your blog posts!
Anyway, I just recently started a blog of my own, and I am looking for ways to get more followers, because I would love to share my passions with lots of people! Would you like to do a guest blog post sometime on a topic like "how to blog for beginners" or if you want to do one of your normal fashion posts, that would work great too. Thanks so much! My blog is: chocolatebumblebeee.blogspot.com

  6. For a summer date night outfit I wore a pretty flowy blush pink blouse with my denim Bermudas and some espadrille wedges and I felt a little weird wearing shorts dressed up. But all the style bloggers do it so I guess it's ok. It was a little out of my comfort zone but I'm glad I gave it a try! Thanks for always being so inspiring!

  7. Thank you so much, Kellyn! That is so kind and sweet and encouraging! I'm a little tapped out on guest posts at the moment, but thank you so much for thinking of me! Best of luck with everything, and welcome to the blogging world!

  8. No problem, I knew it was a long-shot anyway! And thank you...keep up the awesome work on your own blog! :)

  9. I absolutely used to think that shorts were only for tees and flip flops, haha! I love the way shorts look with a nice top and a blazer, though - there's something so easy and, dare-I-say, sexy about dressed up shorts?? I LOVE the pastel pink shorts you linked to here - they're a little shorter than what I normally feel comfortable in, but they are so pretty and look to be quite versatile! :)

  10. Everlane stuff is so versatile it's amazing. Losing the baby weight is my excuse to grab some for my wardrobe. I love layering their pieces too! I'm curious to see if you could help since you have such amazing skin. I'm really bad at skin care or beauty, so I've been eying this brand vain pursuits, did you have any experience with them? You should really consider doing some posts in beauty, I'd love to read them!

  11. Hi Ellie! I'm actually terrible with skin care and beauty stuff. I'm a total drugstore makeup junkie, and that's it! Never heard of Pursuits, sorry.

  12. Thanks the reply Audrey! Haha I love drugstore makeup too. They do the work for their price :) I signed up for vain pursuits a few days ago. Can't wait to get my shipment and see if it works!
