Mix and Match: Striped Skirt and Graphic Tee

For this week's Mix and Match feature I was inspired by this striped skirt from Target.  Beautiful, bold stripes, but less than $20!  WHAT!

Outfit 1
I paired this skirt with a pretty yellow chiffon top, intending to tuck it in and blouse it out a bit at the waist.  I love blue and yellow together, but since I know a lot of people who think they can't wear yellow I was playing around with some green top options too.  Something like this one.

(BTW, I used to think I couldn't wear yellow because of my skin tone too, but it turns out there are many shades of yellow, and I was surprised when I found some that I actually liked on me!)

I know some people who get really anxious about whether or not the whites/lights in your outfit match exactly, but I personally don't make a huge deal about it unless it looks really strange.  It's way too stressful otherwise!  :)

This could be worn to an office paired with the blazer and sensible shoes as shown.  Or wear it sans blazer plus shiny bangles and a smaller bag for a night out.  And go for some sleeker shoes like these if you want!

Blazer: SheInside
Top: Chicwish
Skirt: Target
Necklace: Francesca's
Shoes: 6pm
Bag: Forever 21

Outfit 2
I wanted to make a more laid back outfit with the skirt, but I couldn't decide on how simple or laid back to make it.  My first inclination with a patterned skirt is always to go for a plain tee on top, but since some of you have written to me over the years asking what else to pair with a patterned skirt besides a plain tee, I wanted to provide a different option.  Try a graphic tee!  Yes, with a patterned skirt!

This umbrella tee is more interesting than a plain white tee.  And whereas I'd normally pair a graphic tee with jeans or shorts, pairing one with a pencil skirt creates a cool mix of being laid back and a little dressed up at the same time.  If you can wear fedoras, rock one with this outfit to complete the look!

Shop Outfit #2:
Umbrella Tee: J.Crew Factory
Skirt: Target
Hat: Forever 21
Shoes: Target
Bag: Target

Outfit 3
Here's a casual summer outfit with the umbrella tee.  Instead of pairing it with standard blue jeans I opted for coral shorts to give the outfit more pop.  Since I recently got on board the white sneaker train I couldn't pass on a chance to put them in.  You can go for the infamous Converse All Stars, but I also found this great pair from H&M that doesn't have the red stripe.  If it cools down at night in your area, opt for a cargo jacket as a light layer.  Hat and sunglasses are optional, of course!

Shop Outfit #3:
Tee: J.Crew
Jacket: Old Navy
Shorts: Old Navy
Shoes: Kohl's Converse All Stars / H&M / Target
Hat: Forever 21
Sunglasses: Forever 21
Tote: Madewell

How would you style either of these pieces?

  1. I really like this mix and match concept. I really do just more of a remix. There is a blogger that does a day to day challenge by taking one item from the previous day and re-wearing it the next. I'm not sure I could do that since I don't have a whole lot basic pieces (people would know) but I really liked the concept. It's like an instant remix and you're not locked in to the 30x30.

I like all of these outfits! I'd wear gold cutout flats maybe with the yellow blouse & necklace, I tend to get cream/white shoes scuffed pretty quickly. I love the tee with the skirt - I do a lot of plain tees with plain bottoms but clearly need to get more exciting with mixes and matches! My outfit spreadsheet (yes, seriously...!) is getting some inspiration here :)

  3. These are all great outfits! You make me wanna buy clothes, specially the ones from target. You got a good eye for things that are nice, don't know how you do it. Cheers!

  4. Haha that could either be a good thing or a bad thing! Hopefully you don't have buyer's remorse ;)

  5. Thank you, Julieta! Well the good news is that Target is cheap. And if you don't live in the States, then a striped pencil skirt isn't hard to find!

  6. Oooh I love the idea of gold cutout flats with that outfit! I personally need to do the graphic tee + patterned skirt thing too. When I'm making a layout on my computer, it's a no-brainer, but for some reason when I'm standing in front of my own closet it doesn't come together like that!

  7. So far I've loved all the things I've gotten (cargo vest and ankle boots). Can't wait till the tee comes! Thanks! :)

  8. How comfortable are the beige wedges fr. 6pm? And what would you say about the fit? Run to size?

  9. I don't own them, so I can't speak about what they feel like. Sorry!

  10. I have never heard about it - oh my goodness it looks AMAZING!! I love the idea of visual storage, so much better than reading through an excel file ha. I requested an invite - can't wait to check it out - thanks for the heads up!

  11. Love the striped skirt and umbrella tee...I would definitely do the umbrella tee with stripes!

  12. I'm with Vann girl. Now I own a green cargo jacket, olive skinnies, the navy and white stripe skirt and lots of jewelry pieces. My wallet doesn't thank you, but I do!

  13. Meghan, you need to share this blog!

  14. I love this series and how you show how 2 different items can make 3 different outfits. I love the first look.

  15. I love these posts! Thanks for taking the time to put them together! I have lately become really fond of pairing my graphic tees with maxi skirts and a fun skinny belt around the top of the skirt :)

  16. I love love LOVE outfit #2! always searching for a stylish way to bring my old but loved graphic tees back from the grave. now that I think about it, I have almost all the makings of this outfit. I'll probably be copying it soon ;) thanks Audrey! hope you are well!!
