Mix and Match: Purple Skirt & Floral Top

Trying something new today!

As I'm approaching the third trimester (whaaaaaat?) my closet is shrinking.  I'm reaching a point in maternity wear where I'm content to repeat a handful of outfits over and over and OVER again.  The great news is that it makes for really easy real-life dressing.  The downside is that it makes for really boring blogging.  It's not that I'll never post a new outfit, but I will have a lot less of them.  I mean, there's only so many shapes a pregnant person can wear.  Do you really want to see 50 ways I belt the same dress over my bump?  Mmm, didn't think so.  You can thank me later for sparing you from that.

BUT, at the same time I still want to play with clothes!  And I still want to blog regularly and help people utilize their wardrobes!  So, today I'm trying something new--a mix and match feature so that I can play with some clothes and show some mixing and matching options in the process.  Indulge a sister, will ya?  :)

(ALL of these items are currently available from Target, JCPenney, Kohl's, and Forever 21.  Links below.)

Outfit 1
This is how it all started.  I couldn't help but buy two pieces that I totally can't wear right now but can't wait to wear after the baby: this striped top from JCPenney and this purple Target skirt.  Though this looks almost identical to this one I have from LOFT...the LOFT one is annoyingly pilling.  So dumb!  The JCPenney one is a smoother material that drapes kinda loosely too.

The purple skirt--I've been looking for a skirt this color for maybe a couple of years.  Had to jump on it, pregnant or not!

I paired them together and created a look for going out.  I added a black faux leather moto jacket plus a heel with a hint of personality in the patterned heel to give it some edge.  And for kicks, a touch of mint!

Shop Outfit #1:
Top: JCPenney
Skirt: Target
Jacket: Target
Shoes: Target
Earrings: Target

Here's a second outfit, taking the skirt and creating a softer and more feminine look with a floral top.  I love pink with this magenta/purple/radiant orchid/whateveryoucallit.  I added an iridescent necklace that reflects a little pink so that it pops but doesn't compete with the floral pattern.  A neutral wedge grounds it all.

A cute look for a date!  OR, wear it to work by swapping out the wedge for a nude pump.  Add a white or tan blazer too!

Shop Outfit #2:
Top: Kohl's (option 2)
Skirt: Target
Shoes: Macy's
Necklace: Forever 21

This top is SUCH a great piece to have in your closet, so I took it another look.  Casual, everyday jeans look for running around town.  I pulled out the pinks from the top by pairing it with a coral cardigan.  For a touch of contrast I added a green pendant and kept the rest neutral with gold earrings, neutral wedges, and a white satchel to keep it fresh.

Shop Outfit #3:
Top: Kohl's (option 2)
Cardigan: Kohl's
Boyfriend Jeans: Old Navy
Necklace: Forever 21
Earrings: Target
Shoes: Macy's

Thanks for indulging this preggo lady!  :P

I am such a visual person, and that makes it hard for me to pick out clothes sometimes!! I am a big fan of mannequins in stores to give me ideas. I love that you put together the cutest outfits from stores I shop at!! Thanks so much!!

  5. Okay, this is so cute! I love the last outfit - and those wedges are really fun. I like how you organized this post as well - I'd definitely come back for more Mix and Match posts (but who am I kidding? I love your blog so much I'll come back no matter what you post, ha!).

  7. I'd advise not buying clothes while pregnant for use once you've given birth and are back to pre-pregnancy weight (esp. during your first pregnancy). Pre-pregnancy weight is sadly not pre-pregnancy body. Most women find that their hips are a bit bigger, feet are a bit longer, and the belly is a bit softer/rounder. My old clothes mostly fit, but many not as well as they previously did and were no longer as flattering. Almost 5 years later, I'm finally purging some clothes from my closet that still have tags on them that I bought during my first pregnancy to wear afterwards that never quite looked good.
    Loved outfit #3 :)

  8. These outfits are cute! Personally I would like to see more of your maternity wadrobe. Being 15 weeks preggo, i am not tto crazy about spending money on new maternity clothes. I would love to know how to make a few good pieces work. Thanks!

Cargo vests for the win!! And to think I almost got rid of mine a few months back!! What was I thinking!?!? And girl, I am the worst at labeling...I am so far gone that I am not even going to try and catch up! Ha!!

  11. Haha...what I'm trying to say is that I've basically shown my whole maternity wardrobe, and now I'm perfectly content to repeat everything 20 times until I'm due. :)

All outfits are under this label, including (non)maternity pieces that work for the small to medium bump stage: http://www.puttingmetogether.com/search/label/maternity%20style

  13. i know its about the cargo vest but I like the bag. It's pretty big but the subtle matching of the handles with sandals. Cute.

  14. It's great for those days when it's just right - not too hot and not too cold!

  15. I don't often comment, but I wanted to give you a heads up that if you wear your regular t-shirts and tanks too often under your growing baby bump you may inadvertently ruin them by permanently stretching them out/killing the tiny elastic fibers. I learned this the hard way (I'm on week 41 of my fourth pregnancy). I hoped to get through not having to buy as many maternity clothes but ended up regretting not biting the bullet because I ended up having to replace soo many things. It won't be immediately noticeable and you can probably get away with it for a wear or two before your bump is too big, but I'd start looking on ebay or thredup.com to get some used maternity tops if you can't find good prices in stores and don't want to invest a ton of money for such a temporary wardrobe (ebay is a good place to buy tops as "lots" to get more bang for your buck because of the nature of maternity clothes). Congrats on your sweet blessing! :-)

You make cargo vests look so cute and current, lucky duck! I constantly struggle with styling mine. I wonder if it's the body shape? Or the 'tude? Regardless, you got both in spades, girl! And sorry for not having stopped by in a while. Life, ya know? ;p

  17. This is really cute. I just got this vest and am already loving it, but will try it like this also! Coincidentally, I just posted my first outfit using this vest today (but I like yours better)... joannasdesign.blogspot.com

  18. Thanks for the heads up. Not to worry though, this is a maternity top. :)

  19. Haha, yay! I do not regret buying mine AT ALL, and it's a couple of years old at this point.

  20. DO NOT apologize for not being around! Of course I love when you come by, but life needs to come first! Hopefully you're doing well :)
