How to Wear Chambray for Spring - 7 Ways

Back in October I posted How to Wear Chambray for Fall and had to limit it to fall styling because there were so many ways to style a chambray top.  I knew I wanted to follow it up with a spring edition to showcase just how remixable this piece is, so here we are!

A chambray top is such an easy piece to mix and match, and it can be updated for the appropriate season by using different kinds of accessories and colors.  These looks use many of the same suggestions as the fall edition, but with spring styling such as floral skirts, sandals, shorts, etc.  Have fun and experiment with which spring pieces you can pair yours with and the different ways you can accessorize with springy pieces!

Here are the large versions of the outfits:

1. Paired With Light Neutral Bottoms.  Light colored jeans brighten up chambray for spring! I added some dimension by leaving the chambray top open and layering a tank top underneath as well as adding some pattern with a scarf.

2. Paired With Colored Jeans.  Pair chambray with any bottoms of any color—red, green, yellow, coral, you name it. Sometimes solid on solid can look a little plain, so incorporate some pattern or interest in small ways with accessories. Here I added pattern with a scarf, but if it’s too warm for a scarf go for a statement necklace instead. Or add pattern in your shoes!

3. Tied Over a Flowy Skirt.  Pair a chambray top with a light, flowy skirt. It’ll add an airiness to heavier chambray texture, making it great for spring. If it looks alright on your body shape, try tying it over the skirt to define your waist. If tying shirts doesn’t work for you, try tucking it and add a belt if it still doesn’t look right.

4. Paired With Bright or Patterned Shorts.  Of course chambray would be great with shorts, especially in the spring closer to summer. The long sleeves will give you some warmth on top while letting your legs breathe and soak up the sun. Try it with shorts of any kind, whether solid or patterned. (See two pics down for an example with patterned shorts.) For the look shown here I added a striped shirt underneath so that a little pattern would peek through the otherwise all-solids outfit.

5. Paired With a Patterned Skirt.  I often have people ask what else they could pair with their patterned skirts besides a solid white or black tee, and my first response is always to try it with chambray. Chambray is pretty much like your favorite pair of blue jeans but for your top half. Essentially it goes with any pattern or color on bottom, just like blue jeans would go with pretty much any colored or patterned top. For skirts, again, you could tie or tuck the top, depending on what looks better with your body shape.

6. Open Over a T-shirt.  For a laid back look wear your chambray top open over a tee or a tank. Here I paired it with patterned shorts and added a pop of color with a necklace, but there are plenty of other variations. Try it with a striped tank underneath paired with black or colored skinny jeans, for example.

7. Layered Under or Over a Dress.  I borrowed this look from the fall version of the chambray remix because I think it works for spring too. Layer a chambray top under a dress like in the pic above or tie it over a dress. Experiment with dresses of any color or pattern. It’s cute tied over a floral maxi dress! (I wish I had an example pic of that, but I can’t do the tying thing with my growing baby bump!)

What pairing will you try next with your chambray top?

  3. Thank you!! I just picked up the Target shirt last week and the first thing I did when I got home was look your fall post. I ended up wearing it to a kid birthday party with black skinny jeans and flats - it was comfy and I think it looked pretty cute! Do you think it would work with a maxi skirt (with the sleeves rolled up)?

  4. No, seriously, I was going to email you today to ask you for some help with styling a chambray shirt. I bought my first one in over two decades (?) and when I put it on to show my husband, he called it my "farm shirt". I never recovered and returned it the next day. But I'm bound and determined to make a chambray shirt work for me....

  8. Audrey, any suggestions for a short-sleeved versiont? I love my regular chambray shirt and wear it all the time; but when it's in the 90's and gets up over 110 in the summer here, it's just too much. Thinking a short-sleeve chambray shirt would be great!

  9. This post is perfect! I was juuuuuust starting to run out of Springy ideas for my chambray shirt. I always forget about the leaving it unbuttoned with a shirt underneath look. And I love the idea of stripes underneath to break up an otherwise all-solids outfit. Thanks for the great ideas!

I need to get a chambray shirt. I would style a chambray skirt with a cute dress or with chinos.

  13. Cute x7! Chambray is the wonder shirt that just makes this so darn easy, but you're an excellent remixer too :) Big fan of the layering under a striped dress and the knotting with a skirt. You're headed into wearing it unbuttoned territory, but I'm kind of happy to be back to wearing it regular-style this summer, ha.

  14. Of course it would work with a maxi skirt! Why wouldn't it?

  15. Haha! Hopefully you'll find something that works! Sometimes the pockets of a chambray shirt look a little more western or cowboy, like option 9 above. But if you have a classic one like any of the other options I showed, then you should be able to get a non-farm look going!

  16. I think you could do almost any of these for a short-sleeved version, as long as the sleeve width isn't too wide or you do something in the outfit to balance it out. You can definitely do the versions where it's open.

  17. It might be a good investment for you to get a chambray in the next size up. I did that when I was pregnant last spring/summer and LOVED wearing it knotted over my bump! It looked best with maxi dresses or skirts, but I even did it with a midi length jersey pencil skirt pulled up (so that it was knee length) over the bump. Enjoy your pregnancy- you're looking fabulous!

  18. Love all of these. My problem is finding a shirt to work with a large bust. I can't find anything which isn't ahem straining. I probably need to look for a different shape but in chambray fabric I guess.....

  19. I have a large bust too, and I have #4 from Target. It fits perfectly, no pullin or gaping.

  20. These looks are super cute, Audrey! I just might have to pick up a chambray shirt myself... :)

  21. Chambray is definitely one of the most versatile fabrics...it goes with almost anything! I so love it especially with the colored pants and patterned skirt :)
