Purple on Purple

I've reached that point in pregnancy where my belly's not full enough for most maternity clothes, but I'm definitely feeling the limitations of my current wardrobe.  Tunics and flowy tops have been great, but still limited compared to what I'm used to having access to.  So I've been repeating outfits, including current ones like stripes/white blazer/distressed maternity jeans and going back to really, really old ones, like today's (from ~1.5 yrs ago), that are comfortable for a little baby bump.  Is that against style blogger rules?  Oh well, cuz it be happening.

Is it also against style blogger rules to be really matchy-matchy?  Cuz that be happening too.  I don't mind it as much in accessories (like...how ALL of my accessories are cognac all day everyday), but I usually wouldn't put, say, a blue dress with a blue cardigan.  For some reason I love the purple on purple here.  Enough to repeat it--and repeat blog it.  (Double blog?! Oh my gosh!!!)  I think I don't mind the matching here because the dress is printed which helps to break up the colors.  Or maybe I'm just trying to find any excuse to convince myself that it works.  :)  Do you lean towards matching colors in your outfit or do you prefer contrasting colors?

  1. I'm a contraster big time. But sometimes the matchy-matchy look is hard to resist.

  6. I love to match AND mix and match. There's nothing wrong with it! Anything goes in fashion these days, no rules. Match all you like! I like the purple, it's very cohesive and pleasing to the eye this way.

  7. Even though the dress and cardigan are both purple, I think it works because they are different shades of purple. That makes it appear less matchy-matchy.

  8. I ran across this blog via pinterest today. I'm not currently pregnant (I'm the mom of 4 kids 7 and under!), but I thought you might like seeing some of her maternity fashion posts. http://www.allthingskatiemarie.blogspot.com/2014/01/katies-closet-how-to-not-shop-in.html

I think he purples together work well here because of the print (as you'd mentioned) and also because the hues of the purples are different enough to provide a strong visual contrast. I don't think this outfit matchy-matchy at all. In fact, I think you look totes adorbs. ;p

  12. Love the outfit! I really hope that you find time to continue to blog after the little nugget comes. You have a great sense of style that is so real compared to many of the other fashion bloggers out there! Can't wait to see your maternity fashion!

  15. I think the reason I stay away from matchy outfits is because they feel so much more difficult to do well! As in, I would stand in front of the mirror for 20 minutes trying to decide if *this* shade of purple perfectly matches *that* shade of purple or if they're just off enough that they actually clash. I love this outfit of yours, but the mental stress just isn't worth it for me :)

One way I will match, though, is with neutrals! I have no problem layering different shades of cream or gray because it feels safer.

  19. Very nice looking, I would never think to do this, great idea.

  20. Its kinda nice to see a monochromatic outfit. I feel like as bloggers sometimes we try to put as many colors and patterns into one outfit, so its refreshing to see just 2 colors!

  21. Audrey, when bloggers do it, they just call it monochromatic, and it looks so chic on you! love it with the purple!

  22. Audrey, Hey! I love the way you tie your shirt. Can you please tell me how to?

You've tied it beautifully in this outfit.

  23. The cardi and dress work so well together, I can see why you'd repeat wear it! :)

Dresses and skirts got a lot of wear time in the first and second trimesters for me - most comfortable way to dress a growing bump without buying maternity wear right away!

  24. I think those 2 purples go together really well. I tend to wear more neutral or similar colors rather than a lot of contrasting colors.

  25. I don't think this is too matchy-matchy. You look lovely. And for some reason this is the first I've heard of your pregnancy...congrats!! Can't wait to see you rocking maternity wear as you get further along :)

  27. Oh, SO true! How did I forget about monochromatic? Haha. Thanks for the reminder!

  28. Hi Rach! I gather the material to one side and twist it so that it's easier to tie. For the knot I loop it around itself into a knot....not sure how else to explain that part, haha sorry.

  29. Thanks Mica! I'm excited that I'm pregnant in the spring and summer (since summers aren't too bad where I live)...cuz that means I can wear dresses all the time!

  30. I struggle with being all matchy-matchy. I feel like I'm taking the easy way out or something and try to pair an item with one of its opposite color. I think this looks really nice actually. That dress is SO pretty and the shade of the cardigan isn't an EXACT match for the dress so I think you're safe :)

  32. Rules are meant to be broken, aren't they! As long as you 'feel' good, who cares about repetition?! Haha! BTW, even I'm not a fan of matchy-matchy stuff, but must say that this outfit looks rather nice! :) Something tellls me that a pop of yellow (maybe in the form of necklace) would also look great here!

  33. I love this shade of purple!

  34. I struggle with being matchy.. Or locked in to coordinating colors. Like my Black and Tan cardigan can ONLY be worn with a black top. Etc.. I am trying to spread my wings.. This blog helps! I can't visualize it but seeing it work here helps. :)

  35. I really like when things coordinate or match - I think it is less expected in the blogging world because many bloggers want to push the envelope and do things that are different...but to me, a lot of what is tried by most "big name bloggers" (and even lesser-known bloggers!) just doesn't work. Keep on matching/coordinating/repeating! That's why I love you!
