Casual Day 3 - The Magical Top

These dolman tunics with the elastic down on the hips--when I first picked it up I was sure it wouldn't work for me, but it turns out they're magical.  Or this one is, at least.  Somehow the elastic at the waist and how it causes everything above it to drape magically hides a tummy.  Not that I'm trying to hide my baby belly, but this top does it and I've been in awe all week.

I mean, look:

The pictures on the left are what the top looks like just hanging on me...and NOT sucking in.  The right is what's really under there.  HOW ON EARTH?!?!  I don't know, but like I said...magical.  I've gotten asked a few times over the years for tips to conceal a tummy, and a top like this would definitely be on the top of my list if I were trying to do that.

Besides that, it's super soft and stretchy and I've been wearing it for the last 3 days and you bet it's coming on the retreat next week.  It's essentially a t-shirt with fancy draping and is actually more comfortable!  (Retreat style completed in the pic with the jacket, cuz it be cold at night.  Probably would swap the flats for TOMs.)

The sad part is that this exact top isn't available anymore!  I know.  I hyped it all up only to let you down.  I found some similar ones, linked below, and while I can't guarantee that they'll do the job I would recommend at least trying ones like this.  Even if you're not trying to conceal anything, it's comfy beyond comfy.

  3. Thank you for posting this (By the way I follow your blog but have never posted a comment and I just want to say you have revolutionized the way I dress - what an awesome ministry!) I am pregnant but not wanting to tell anyone yet. However, I am definitely showing and have been racking my brain trying to figure out what to wear to church on Sunday. I just happen to have a very similar blouse that I never would have thought of wearing! THANK YOU!

  4. These tops are magical post-pregnancy too! Hide all that postpartum jiggle AND the neckline easily pulls down if you plan on nursing. Win-win for this momma :)

  8. Oh I love the fitted waist tops like this - when I was hiding my baby bump in the office, all of these styles of tops came out to play! Definitely magical. Great for hiding a tummy, and a baby belly! :)

  10. You look so cute, and those type of tops are VERY forgiving. I just gave away a slew of very similar Cable & Gauge tunics from the past few seasons because they're too big now. I love that purse - if the straps were a different, I would snag that.

  11. I have a top like that - it's from White House Black Market, found it in a local consignment shop. :-) On the hanger I was like "It'll probably make me look shapeless and top-heavy..." but it was WHITE HOUSE BLACK MARKET so I decided to try it on. And I love it!!! It does exactly what you say it does - hides a multitude of things while being utterly flattering!

Your baby bump is adorable. :-)

  12. Neutral necklaces--that's a great tip! That makes it even easier because then you only really need a few necklaces. Thanks for sharing!

  14. Hey Audrey! I have a question for you: I have noticed that many tops/dresses that lay the way this one does are made of rayon. I don't usually pay much attention to fabric, but I've gotten to where when I see or feel that stuff, I run the other way because it pills and gets nubby almost IMMEDIATELY! Do you have this problem or am I the only one to notice it? Any advice? I'd love to see a post on fabric care, longevity etc (especially b/c so many of the cute and cheap shirts on Jane or in Target are made of rayon!)

  15. Oh, how I love mint! I really disliked it a few years ago, but I have really come around. I think the idea of wearing a necklace in the same color family as your top is so great - there's something really clean and oddly unexpected about wearing them together that I love so much! You look beautiful in mint, too, by the way.

  16. Hi Ashley! I usually hand wash and air dry these types of shirts to help with it not pilling as quickly.

  17. That top is so nice and sad that it is not available. If you see a similar one, please let us know :-)

  18. I agree 100%...adding a necklace is the best way to look "put together" (so to speak!)

  19. That top looks so comfy and it does hide your belly! What's up with the heavy jacket though? I know you aren't wearing that in SoCal!

  20. So I saw this outfit over in your 'recent outfits' section on the right and thought "Wow, she looks SO good in black!" You where a lot of color on the blog which I think is great and what I'm normally drawn to style-wise. However, there's something about a black top like this one that catches my eye. No idea but it really looks great on you!

I'm bummed that top isn't available anymore but it's a pretty common style so I'm sure I could find one. I have a striped one but I think the basic black would make it super versatile. I can't believe how much a difference it makes in hiding your baby bump (or a food baby, either one).

  21. Love this top! Actually just purchased 2 off the shoulder tunics from Victoria Secret with the very similar cut and they are definitely magical :)

  22. First of all, you look great! Mint is such a pretty color on you. I actually just started buying some tops in this color, and I'm having a problem finding the right color pants (for the office) to go with mint. I know it's kind of a lame question, but do you think black or dark gray pants could go with a mint cardigan?

Anyway, I just love your blog, I only found it a few months ago, but your tips are so helpful :)
