Belt Placements

Belt placements can be subtle changes that make a significant difference.  Typically I would place the belt at the narrowest part of my body, and that spot will be different for every person.  For me, sans baby bump, the narrowest part would be right under my rib cage, a couple of inches below my bust, like in all the pics above.

However, once my bump is bigger (meaning, like after I eat...see this Insta bahaha) that placement doesn't work well anymore.  Instead I'd place the belt 2 inches higher, directly under my bust and above my baby bump.  If I tried to put it a couple of inches lower in my usual spot under my rib cage, it would cut right across my wide bump which looks weird and unflattering.

Whether you're pregnant or notbelt placement matters.  The image above is not necessarily the belt guide placement for everyone, since like I said, your most flattering spot will be different for everyone.  It's just an illustration of the difference placement can make depending on your body.

If you are not pregnant but have a bit of a tummy that you don't want to accentuate, try putting the belt right below your bust in addition to using a wider belt to provide more balance.  If your bust is bigger, that will help give some overall balance as well and a skinny belt might be okay.  Lastly, see plus-sized blogger Katie's tips for belting your curves.

Overall, play with your belt placements and belt widths to get the perfect balance that works for your body!

  1. I can't! I just can't, girl! I'm too skurred! My belly has always been the bane of my existence. I used to not want to highlight it, sure, but now that I'm of that age where I don't care, it's the bane for other reasons. Namely, no matter where I place my belt, it's uncomfortable. Too high and I can't breathe. Too low and I develop multiple stomachs when I sit down. Maybe I just don't have the posture for belts. I'll just admire it on others. Like you. You look super cute in belts. Sigh...

  2. I think it's so cute when pregnant ladies belt their tops to show of the baby bump!

  3. Great post! Good to know for the future (when I might have a baby bump). I have kind of a boyish figure, so I love using belts to define my waist a little more.

  5. What if you have a thin body small bust but a bump (no baby lol) where do you put the belt then? Wide or thin belt?

I used to hate wearing belts because I thought it made me look way too thick waisted and have learned it totally does the opposite. I love using a skinny belt to accentuate my waist now.

I love this outfit on you and the illustration is great!

  7. I totally have this problem, Blima. I'm shaped like a scrawny guy all over, except for my feminine poochy belly. It's lovely, I know!
So I don't worry about my belt placement for my stomach. I focus on my legs instead. If I want to make them look really long, I raise the belt. If I want to look curvier, I put the belt at the smallest part of my waist (or where it SHOULD be). If I want to look willowy (ha!) I put it lower on my hips.
Wide belt or skinny belt depends more on the outfit than your body. DON'T look at trends when you decide this, because it will be determined by the shape of your outfit. Just try both belts, then trust yourself with your choice. If you are looking for ideas, pinterest is a good place to start. Or I bet Audrey would be willing to do a spot on wide vs skinny (if she hasn't already).

  8. I must say, pregnancy sure looks good on you! And I don't just mean your cute bump, though you do carry that well.
I've been following you for some time now, and you ALWAYS look darling. But then I took a break for a while (crazy life) and now I see your last several posts--you are DAZZLING! Your face can do no wrong.

  10. I think I'm past the belt stage at 24 weeks now, my pregnancy stayed hidden until around 21-22 weeks then the last couple of weeks it's just popped right out! Starting to think about maternity items now, can't think of any that I already have that had a belt though.

Like your blue blazer very much, so pretty with the patterned top :)

  28. So fun! I just found your blog a few days ago (thank you pintrest!) and it's so helpful! You've got me mixing and matching my wardrobe and coming up with some fun things. I'm actually due (with #3) same time as you, so now I'm excited to see what you do with maternity clothes too!

Congratulations! I'm thirteen months into motherhood, and it has been a great ride so far! Dressing a growing bump was fun for me, and I personally stayed away from maternity clothes, just because I didn't like what was in my local area...bummer.

The challenge I had was dressing afterwards. I lost all of my weight pretty quickly (and some extra), so a lot of my pre-pregnancy clothes were too big, and I just felt blah about my body and clothes in general.

I'm back into the swing of things now, and you're blog has been great at giving me some inspiration for "back to work clothes".

  31. I'm still loving that abstract b & w top lady! And I also adore when pregnant ladies show off their bumps with a belt… you only have so long to embrace it!

  32. Congrats! I'm at 25 weeks with my first. :) I'll be really interested in how you change or don't change the way you dress. I've mostly just worn my same things or similar style as things work with my growing belly. But some things just don't work anymore. Ah well. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

  36. Realize I'm a little late here, but: Congratulations SO much on the baby!!! I'm very happy for you guys. I actually wanted to ask you about the jawbone bracelet in the mobile photo. What's your experience with it? Do you recommend it? I've been thinking of getting one, but thought it might be tiresome to wear every day as a bracelet ... ?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Jane! I love the jawbone and haven't gotten sick of wearing it as a bracelet. I got it in grey so that it's less noticeable. Overall I love the interface on the app, BUT I have faced issues with it breaking pretty often. At first I thought it was because I showered with it, but even when I got a replacement and didn't shower with it anymore it still broke. The customer service is great and always sends replacements for free, but it's pretty inconvenient that it breaks so often.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks! I think I might get one too, haha, it looks great with that outfit :)

  39. I've been away from your blog for a couple of months, and when I pulled up your latest post today I thought "hmm, I don't remember her having a little belly. That looks like a little baby belly. I wonder..." but I didn't want to make assumptions. And then I read on and realized it was true! Congratulations! I love your style and can't wait to see how you dress your bump :)
