Don't be scared of black leather jackets.

There are so many things I could say about a black leather jacket.  Like, should I refer to my hardcore days when I wore lipstick that was the same color as the jeans in these pictures?  Or maybe I'll save that for a day I have my hands on some pictures from that proud era of my life...  (They're all far, far away hidden at my mom's house.)

That said, don't be scared of a black leather jacket!  People I've talked to immediately associate black leather with something harder than it needs to be.  I know the description of my high school self above does not help get that image out of your mind, but a black leather jacket doesn't need to make you look intimidating!  Yes, it's a little tougher than a cognac leather jacket, but definitely not to the extent that most people seem to have in their head.  Pair it with a cute, girly dress or a top with a playful print to soften it up.  Try dark jeans and a v-neck tee for a simple, chic look.  Or do what I did here: This is an outfit that could be a comfy, office-friendly outfit if paired with a black cardigan.  Since I don't work in an office I simply swapped out the cardigan for the jacket.  Hopefully I don't look too intimidating!  :)

What are your thoughts on a black leather jacket?

  2. I think as long as the jacket doesn't have too many intimidating embellishments - like spikes or huge buckles - then it functions just like a denim jacket: it roughs up a potentially twee or cutesy look and gives it a more substantial, grown up edge. Loving this look on you! And as to the hair inquiry yesterday - I think this length is aces but I'm partial to it being shorter only because the diagonal cut is more pronounced. Does that make sense?

I have one in my closet that I've never worn! Need to style it.

  10. I would love to see some photos from that 'proud era', Audrey! :)
That being said, I love how you've styled the leather jacket with burgundy pants and a printed top. Black pumps bookend the jacket perfectly and that necklace adds interest to the outfit.

  11. The cut is really important in a black leather jacket. You don't want anything too boxy or masculine. If you can find a thinner leather, even better! I love the contrast of wearing my black leather with something feminine like in the look below.

You look great as always :)

  12. I actually just bought a faux leather jacket over the weekend! I can't wait to wear it once it gets cool enough around here. I never would have bought something like it a few years ago, but these days I love how a leather jacket looks with jeans and some girly pieces (like your heels here or a lace top). It's all about balancing the tough with the feminine, right? :)

  17. I think a black leather jacket is a staple! I have 2 now, even though there are so few days here in Queensland that it actually gets to leather jacket weather!

  18. I just purchased an oxblood faux leather jacket and I am waiting for it to arrive. I have been wondering if it was a bad purchase for me since I am in my 40s. Although you are younger than me, I think I can style it with a blouse or a tee and scarf and be happy. Thanks for the style ideas! Perfect timing! And I love your whole look!! Susan

I bought a burgundy faux leather last year and am in my late fourties! I wore it quite often and now have three other colors.

The black leather moto is the piece I have been holding back on until I get to my final goal weight!

  21. I love the moto jacket look. Fall is the perfect season to "rocker-chic" - up your wardrobe without being TOO intense. Great roundup!

  22. Thank you! I have been on the fence about a black leather moto jacket, and the title of this post really convinced me. After reading, I really appreciate your advice, and the boost of courage it gave me to go ahead and invest!

  23. Love this post! I'm all about the leather, especially black leather jackets! Mine is my signature; I wear it with basically everything! I actually just wrote about it in my latest post! I don't think girls should be afraid of leather at all! I think we should embrace it! :)

  25. I love the way the jacket fits you. The diagonal lines of the zipper are very flattering. How did you find the sizing? Did you go with the one that matched your measurements or go up or down?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Even though my shoulders matched the measurements for the Small and it actually fit, the armholes were tight, which there aren't measurements for online. I didn't anticipate that one, but I don't think I have particularly large arms. I'm usually Small at Target, sometimes XS, sometimes Medium, and I love this jacket in Medium, but I probably could have even gone for a Large and been okay. Good luck!

  27. Thanks for this post. Love the quilted look of option 2. I have a good quality faux leather jacket I got last year, a dark chocolate brown. I haven't worn much since our weather is what it is out here in SoCal. I feel stuck though on what to pair it with still.

  28. Your jacket is beautiful! I really like the style of it. I feel like when I wear my faux leather jacket, everyone asks if I rode my motorcycle (in their defense, I do wear it on my bike right now until I find a real one!). But its associated with the darker side and I think we need to change that, one wear at a time!

  29. I love black leather! But then again, I love that tougher look paired with feminine pieces.

  30. I really love this, Audrey! I have been looking for a cognac or black faux leather jacket for a long time now, and keep turning to you for inspiration on how to wear them. I really like how you put this outfit together - the colorful pants and fun printed blouse keep the jacket from looking too "hard."

  31. I was afraid to wear mine for years after a friend gave it to me. I love how it looks but aren't too fond of the center zipper and the little neck clamp thing makes me feel like I'm choking. One day, I'd like to invest in a quality black leather jacket with the asymmetrical zipper since I believe it to be a very versititle clothing piece. I like how you paired it with your purple pants!
