I bought this sweater at the beginning of the year because I had basically no sweaters and it was winter.  I loved its thin material, thinking it'd be great for San Diego.  Boy, was I RIGHT.  Nine months later, and I still appreciate it.  I guess that's what happens when you choose the right basics.  They are underdogs and underestimated (in my closet, at least) but they always come out on top over time.  Shablam.

Do you give basics their fair recognition, or are you like me and are always surprised when you realize how important they are?

These options are all navy even though some look black.  And almost all of them are on major sale from J.Crew Factory ($25-35), Old Navy ($20), and JCPenney ($13).

  1. I hear ya about thinner sweaters for us So Cal folks! I'm afraid to get too many heavy ones when there isn't the option to take them off it it gets too warm! It looks like you found quite the winner. The color looks really nice on you. This outfit would look even better with your bright orange heels to play with opposite colors!

  2. In Minnesota thinner is great for the end of the summer! Having thin sweaters is nice for layering though because you can't dress for the weather alone, the office is usually quite warm! I was perusing online and bumped into this store, thought you might like some of the items in it! http://shopruche.com/vintage-inspired-clothing.html?limit=96

  3. Oh, this looks great! I love me a basic navy sweater. I had one I wore often but it finally bit the dust last year.

  4. Shablam! Lol. I basically mostly just get basics, and add fabulous accessories to make an outfit. I love how thin the sweater is. I love the coverage with out the bulk!

  5. Oh, Audrey! This is so dang cute! I love the deep blue of this sweater! I'd love a pair of lighter wash denim to wear with my navy blue tops (I feel weird wearing navy blue with dark wash denim...), but I'm struggling finding a pair that fits, is comfortable, within my price range, etc. Ah well...I'm sure I'll find something I like soon!! :)

As for basics, I pretty much have a closet full of basics with a few more memorable/fun pieces, and then a ton of great accessories (scarves and necklaces, mostly) to make the basics look more interesting :)

  6. Basics are the building blocks of a good, sustainable wardrobe. BTW, I love that necklace.

  7. This happens to me too... it seems so obvious later, like of course the perfect weight, perfect color (I mean navy, come on - especially with this necklace) is going to be the right basic. And unfortunately the reverse still happens sometimes too with the things I think are going to be so perfect and used over and over, and then whoops. Guess all we can do is keep hoping for good deals on the happy accidents :)

  8. i totes agree on finding good basics! you end up wearing them all the time, so they might as well be awesome ones!

  9. I love the basics. , I always want to buy the same colors- brown, grey, blue, green. My challenges are along the lines of adding in some other things to make it interesting.

  10. I love my navy sweater too... I often forget about it, but it always pulls through! You look so polished in these fab basics!

  11. I've been surprised in the past year or two how basics have slowly started to overtake my closet more and more. But they're so versatile, and so easy to mix and match and accessorize!

  12. I am in need of thin sweaters for days that are too cold for a "regular" long sleeve and too warm for a thick sweater. Basics FTW, lol!

I agree that the basics are sometimes forgotten but they are such great layering pieces. Love it with the pretty necklace!

  14. I continue to be enamored of those flats. They are so versatile and i love seeing how you've styled them.
