Fall Wedding Attire

I spent this weekend in New York state at a friend’s wedding, and as I write this I’m on a plane heading back from New York to a work retreat.  The wedding was in a cute town 20 minutes outside of Ithaca, and it was a beautiful outdoor wedding by a lake, despite the 46 degree weather.  So, came the age old question: What do you wear to an outdoor fall wedding?

Truth be told, I had no idea.  Even though I’ve been to a bajillion weddings most of them were in California with very different weather and a more laid-back style overall.  Fall wedding on the east coast?  Errrr…?

That’s how I ended up writing that post on fall dresses last week--I was looking for ideas for types of dresses one could wear to a fall wedding.  A REAL fall wedding.  Not the “it’s November and 70 degrees” kinda fall weddings we do here in SoCal.  I was looking for darker colors like maroon, forest green, or jewel tones, and dresses in a thicker material with more structure.  Somehow I struck gold at Target when a ¾ sleeve maroon lace dress caught my eye!

The first look is how I wanted to wear it because I’m partial to tan accessories, but 46 degrees is a little cold for this California girl to brave bare legs.  The second look with fleece lined tights and a coat is what I ended up wearing.  I couldn’t believe that I was actually warm enough, and I was so glad that I could focus on the ceremony instead of focusing on trying to stay warm!

  2. Love this! Such a great fall look. You're smarter than I am ... last year I went to an outdoor wedding in upstate NY around this same time and FROZE my tush off.

One question about the dress -- is it long or 3/4 sleeve? The listing says long sleeves but it looks 3/4 on you. And I have long monkey arms, so I think about things like this :)

  3. You picked a perfect wedding dress for the East Coast. I'm from Jersey and I wore a very similar dress to a fall wedding I went too but it was a deep teal.

  4. Ithaca! I'm so jealous- I went to school there.

  6. I love this dress on you! I think it really works great both ways! I've only once been to a winter wedding, and I wore a black dress, cardigan, and tights. I remember being cold, but that's mostly because we had a long walk on an unplowed (snowy) parking lot from the car to the reception site.

  7. I love it both ways, and the chunky gold necklace is so classic. This reminds me of Kate Middleton for some reason. Perhaps it's the sleeves?

  8. I love this with the tights, maybe because it validated the tights I wore under my navy dress to a wedding this weekend too. I wore black pumps with the tights and hope it looked okay.

  9. I love this dress, both with the tan and the black (perhaps because I live in New York state, so that's my kind of outfit!). I bet the wedding was gorgeous. I went to college about a half hour away from Ithaca and it beautiful out there. Now you've got me wondering which town!

  10. I love both of these outfits - it's a special little treat to see you all glammed up. looking good lady :)

  11. I love this dress! I need this dress! I love it both ways, but I would probably go for the tights to make it work appropriate (I am a school counselor). I am bottom heavier and I'm wondering if this dress would work for me. I can't tell if it's A-line(ish) or just straight down. I'd like to try!!!! Great look, Audrey!

  13. LOVE this outfit! I am a big fan of lace in general, but this maroon version is just gorgeous!

  14. The finger lakes region this time of year is so beautiful- it's the only time I get home sick. I was married on Seneca Lake at Belhurst, but if you were so close to Ithaca, I suspect the wedding was on Cayuga Lake. Great outfit choice; perfect for fall.

  15. What a gorgeous dress, Audrey! The burgundy looks fantastic on you - I'd say you definitely struck gold at Target. =)

  17. I cracked up when I opened this post today. I'm going to a wedding this upcoming Saturday and bought the same exact dress and shoes as in your first picture. The only thing I'm doing differently is the jewelry. I'm wearing a long gold and pearl necklace and foregoing a belt.

  18. That lace dress is so pretty on you...and you look fab in maroon!

  19. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be full length or what, but I didn't alter the sleeves or anything and as you can see, they hit about 3/4 on me, maybe a little lower. For reference, I'm 5'6" if that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, that helps! I actually prefer 3/4 because then they're still long enough to be warm but I don't have to worry about whether they look too short or not :)

  21. I have almost the exact same dress, and I've never thought to pair it with the nude heels I have - great inspiration!! I've worn it the way you ended up wearing it, and I love it that way. Definitely a classic look for a fall wedding or winter event!

  24. What kind of coat did you wear? That is my biggest problem - finding outerwear to go along with my dressier outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Navy military-inspired coat (isn't as hardcore as it sounds) that hit mid-hips. I think it would have also worked with a black, tan, or navy peacoat. Even a cream one would have worked.

  26. Did you use the "find in store" feature to see if there's one available at a nearby Target? (Or do you not have a nearby Target? >_< )

  27. I'm traveling again, so I don't have the dress in front of me right now, but I *think* it's straight down. Only way to know if it works for you is to try, though!

  28. It is gorgeous! I miss having a lake right outside my window sometimes!

  29. Wow, beautiful dress! And as much as the nude shoes look great, the black does too! Sometimes warmth is more important than fashion ;-)

  30. Where did you get your fleece lined tights? I'm intrigued that you said they were warm enough. I have such a hard time finding quality warm tights that last more than one use without tearing or sagging. Cute outfit!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I bought mine from Bare Necessities for a hefty price of $34, which I honestly don't think is worth it. My sister said she found some at Nordstrom Rack for a fraction of that price. However, I don't know if the Nordstrom Rack tights sag, but I can say that the Bare Necessities tights haven't sagged or torn yet, and I wore them through one season already. That's good news, but still...$34? What was I thinking?! :)

  32. This dresses would defiantly work for a wedding that I have coming up next month,

  33. You are too cute :-). Thanks so much for your honesty! I just may have to hit up Nordstrom Rack and see what they have :-)

  34. I love the tights and the black booties - so chic for Fall and Winter!

  35. Okay, Audrey, these outfits are SO CUTE. I love lace dresses, and maroon is one of my favorite colors to wear right now. The combination of the two in one dress is perfect! I really like how you styled it for the colder weather as well. While I wore my lace dresses all spring/summer long, I have been a little nervous about styling them with tights. You showed me that it looks awesome! I'm definitely going to need to try it out myself :)
