To repeat or not to repeat? That is the question.

Yes, I wore this top with this necklace in an outfit post not too long ago.  I also paired this tee and necklace with white jeans (yet to be blogged).  Do I have a bunch of other necklaces that would work with this outfit?  Yes, but I simply don't care.  My natural tendency is to repeat what I liked before, whether it's a particular dish at restaurants, areas to park at the mall, or outfits I wear.  And when I say I repeat outfits, I don't mean that I repeat pieces multiple times.  I mean I repeat outfits in their entirety--everything about it including the same top, bottoms, accessories, shoes and all.  Though I started this blog to help me do that less often, it's nice to let myself indulge in my natural inclination towards repetition sometimes.

In regards to being an outfit repeater or someone who strives for a new outfit everyday, I don't think either is wrong or right.  The way I see it, it's really about which way best serves your lifestyle and your value system.  If your lifestyle demands quick and easy dressing with little thought, then give yourself the freedom to repeat outfits as often as is sanitary!  :P  Or, if you value the creative process or have a goal of making better use of your closet (like I did) or growing your style, etc. then there's nothing wrong with pushing yourself to create new looks.  I don't think either should be seen as right or wrong, as long as it's serving you the way that your wardrobe should serve you.

So, who here leans more towards outfit-repeater and who here leans more towards having new outfits regularly?  And, is that serving you well in this season of your life?

  1. Ahahahaha! You've gotta read my blog tomorrow, Audrey! I totally address this question. I think we're polar opposites. But I still like you anyway. ;p

  2. I try to make each outfit a little different every time I wear it - even if it only is accessories! But I often copy pairings quite often, if it works and I enjoyed wearing it the first time around, it makes sense I'd enjoy it again! :) I can't imagine the size your closet would have to be to not repeat things here and there! :)

  3. I repeat outfits a lot, out of laziness and comfort and... okay, mostly laziness. My wardrobe is limited and I don't have the budget to shop often, but I could do more with it. I'm finding that out quickly with the 30x30 remix challenge.

  5. I am absolutely an outfit repeater. Mostly because I'm not that creative, so when I come up with something that passes for stylish, I'm so proud of myself I wear it over and over :)

  6. So cute and easy yet pulled together and polished - your usual strong-suit, of course!

I'm a big-time repeater (just part of why I'm not daily style blogger, ha) When you have something great that you love to wear, go with it! The trick for me has been learning to buy pieces that I will want to repeat, and not buying the pieces that are going to get shoved to the back because I'm too busy wearing the same few over and over. I really could still have a smaller wardrobe and be perfectly happy but that message hasn't entirely made it the shopping impulse part of my brain yet...

  8. I used to repeat my outfits all the time but since the beginning of the year I started blogging about my outfits so I try and come up with a new one every day for work and I amazed at all the different combos I have been able to put together. It really makes me stretch out my closet. I'm pregnant now and I'm still working hard to keep my outfits different but it's a lot more difficult now since I don't haveuch to work with

  9. Oh, I'm a repeater! I can see why you'd wear that top repeatedly - lovely color and fit!

  10. I do repeat. Like, a lot. Especially toward the end of a season (like now) when I'm kinda over all my warm weather clothes. However, it is still 90 degrees outside so I might have to find some new combos just to stave off total boredom.

  11. Definitely a repeater. They're mine. No law against it. Why buy the clothes I love if I'm not gonna wear them and get my monies worth.

  12. I used to be a repeater but since starting my blog I like to experiment with what I have in my closet!!!!! Great outfit. Love the maxi skirt.

  13. This is how I am too, especially with accessories. I have a few great neutral pieces that I can wear with almost anything, and that's how I like it!

  14. I'm definitely a repeater. My wardrobe is filled with few quality timeless garments that I love to wear everyday. It is a better value for my money and I care about our planet. I use accessories to keep my style look fresh.

  15. The other day I almost did a full outfit repeat, but decided to make at least one change. I ended up dropping a belt, adding a necklace, and the outfit was so much better. I'm glad I pushed myself to do something different, even though I gravitate towards doing the same. Same is safe. A lot of my weekend looks are outfits I've already worn on the blog. I think in the end, doing what makes you happy is what really matters.

  16. I avoid repeating exact outfits, but I like to repeat pairings, and switch out one or 2 pieces to make it fresh. Right now, I just want to wear my chambray popover and polka dot cardigan every day, but I'm making myself space it out, and wearing that combo with different colored shorts and skirts, and then when it gets cooler, I'll start bringing my jeans into the mix.

But at restaurants, I get the exact same thing every time. Why risk ordering something new??

  18. If you've got a cute outfit that you love, I think it be a shame not to repeat it!

  19. I try not to repeat exact outfits too often, just because I feel like I'd slide right back into wearing the same things all the time. But if there is a particularly outfit that comes together perfectly in every little detail, I want to be able to feel that great in it more than once!

  20. There's a Nina Garcia quote that I'm too lazy to look up that says something like the fear of repeating outfits is an American thing that the rest of the world doesn't understand. European women generally have fewer outfits (and less closet space), and repeat them without a care since they know they look great.

I took it to heart, and while I try to wear as much of my wardrobe as I can (since it wasn't free!), not worrying about frequency is liberating. Nobody remembers what people wear in real life anyway, unless you sport the same ensemble multiple times per week.

And, truth be told, I don't do laundry so often that the same pieces are clean right away ;)

  21. Interesting question... I think I was in a repetitive style rut for awhile, so that I had a wardrobe more of "outfits" that felt kind of static. Like I would say "well, that's the shirt that goes with... " So I have enjoyed thinking about different ways to remix items and mix patterns, as it has brought new life to my wardrobe, and I see way more connections among the various items in my wardrobe now than I did, say, even 3 years ago. I think it's a balance -- if I swing too far in this remixing phase, then I'll swing the other way again. And so on. And I do repeat outfits sometimes, or pairings, but I don't tend to show them on the blog. Those are my "blog break" days, which also feels nice to build those in. ;)

  22. I'm definitely an outfit repeater when it comes to casual wear--I just like wearing shorts and a tee on the weekends these days. But when it comes to work, I hate repeating outfits. I like coming up with something new each night before bed :)

  23. I'm definitely an outfit repeater, though I try to push myself to mix it up, too. But on days when I'm tired/sick/just don't care, it's a repeat all the way.

My most creative outfit days are usually when I badly need to do laundry and don't have my usuals to fall back on, haha.

  24. I'm an outfit repeater. Once you find something that works, it doesn't take much thought to put it on in the morning- usually not my best time of the day! I did realize that in most of my hiking pictures this summer I'm wearing the same shorts & shirt. I didn't even realize I was doing that, but hiking is all about being comfortable. :)

  25. If an outfit looks good, it'd be a shame not to repeat it! Love this top and necklace combo. Keep on repeating!

  28. I find I do a little of both. When I'm feeling creative or want to re-create an outfit idea I've seen, I put together something new. If I'm in a hurry or tired or just feel like wearing an outfit I love, I go back to old favorites, whether a complete outfit or an outfit uniform with variations in accessories.

  29. I remember that quote! I have the same book :) And she's totally right--if you can barely remember what you wore last week, it's a sure thing nobody else can either!

  30. This is SUPER cute! You've inspired me to knot my t-shirts now. It adds some extra interest, and I never considered it before. Also, now I want stripey maxi skirts!

  31. Hi! I was wondering if you could possibly post the quote and the book that it is in. It'd be great to use in my research paper on outfit repeating. I also plan to quote a part of your blog post, if you don't mind! Thanks in advance!

  32. Hi Ely! I'm not sure what quote you are referring to. I don't quote a book in this post...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I believe it's from her "The Little Black Book of Style" (http://amzn.to/19vtvQm). She also had a book called "The One Hundred" about essential wardrobe items.
