Fall Shopping: Bags Under $50

I've gotten some questions about my satchel, but since it was a gift from my sister and not any brand I recognize I know nothing about it.

BUT, in my searches for an alternative I found some KILLER options!  The best part is that these are mostly from places like Target, Forever 21, JCPenney, ASOS, and ModCloth, and they're all under $50!  Some of them make me drool like whoa.  Many of them come in multiple colors, particularly black and navy, but of course I'm partial to cognac.

If I'm honest, I kind of didn't want to share these with you because I didn't want them to sell out before I decided.  Haha!  But out of the goodness of my heart I am sharing the wealth.  I know, such a giver I am.  :)

Option #1 - BE STILL MY TARGET-LOVING HEART.  This was available in coral in the spring/summer and it is BEAUTIFUL.  I wish I had snatched it up when I saw it in store.  There's a wait list for it now online in the fall colors.  :(  Comes in black and navy too!

Option #2 is so luscious looking, though I have yet to see it in person to confirm that.  It also comes in black, cognac, and a fiery orange/red which is very enticing.

Option #3 - I took this home to try out, but I'm debating between this or putting myself on the wait list for option 1.

Option #4 has a wider base which I actually like a lot.  Click in to see the side view.  I would say this seems the closest to the type of satchel I have.

Option #5 - Cute bag from ModCloth.  I like the two-toned nature of it.

Option #6 - I like that this also comes in green.  I love how green satchels look!

Option #7 - Comes in a variety of colors.  I really like the look, but not sure about the function.  The top that folds down is a flap, but if your bag is too full it doesn't fold down which affects the look of the bag.

Option #8 is bigger than it looks in the picture.  This picture makes it look like a tiny little crossbody bag, but it is not.  I got it in stone/blackish and am trying to decide whether or not to keep it right now.  You can click in to see the proportions on a mannequin.

  1. I got #7 in dark brown a couple of weeks back. I was nervous about the functionally too because I do carry way too much junk, but it's been great so far. Plus I'm motivated to keep less stuff in there so it looks cute and not weighed down. : )

  2. I'm not a huge purse person. Don't get me wrong, I can totally appreciate a beautiful bag but they're usually not on my radar when I shop. I'm one of those people that buys a purse and uses it for two years then upgrades to a new one. Maybe for Christmas this year...

That Target bag is beautiful. I'd love to see what it looks like in person!

  3. These are all so pretty! I am in need of a brown bag for fall, so this post is very helpful.
Also, I have #3 in navy, and I LOVE it. I've even had someone ask me if it was a Coach purse! Definitely great quality for the price, and it's just the right size.

  4. I bought #7 and returned it because, yeh, it was just difficult to get in/out of because of the flap and the zipper. I love #1, haven't seen it in my store either. Have you previewed the Phillip Lim collection? I'm saving my money for one of those gorge satchels!

  9. I have been looking for a new cognac bag for fall! I added 1 and 2 to my cart and will have to decide which one I want. If you find that one works better for you, would you mind letting us know? Thanks friend! Susan

  11. Great picks. Don't you hate it when you see something in the store and you don't buy it and then it's gone!!!!!!! I've learned my lesson to buy it right away if I like it. Phillip Lim is coming to Target this Sunday. I hope there's something left for me when I head over after work.

  13. I bought option 8 the other day- I work in Law Enforcement and it's a great size for you concealed weapon. I'm not a purse person, so I love that it's not too girly and goes with everything!

Option #1 is my favorite, but I'm still in love with my Relic cognac bag I got at Sears. I had no idea how much I would love a large, neutral bag! Vera Bradley, I love you, but a neutral, durable bag can't be beat.

  17. I am in LOVE with #6 in the green color and would have purchased it right this very second but the reviews say the construction is not very good, and the clasps and zippers break quickly. :-( Sad!

  18. Hi Ray,

Would you say you could fit an iPad in it? :)

  19. Option 4 and 8 look very simple and timeless. I'd save my money and get a real leather one as I would want it to last forever. Roots has a fabulous collection of leather handbags in tan if you're interested.

  26. Tricky question here, I am really frustrated with the number of budgeting bloggers that continue to support F21 despite their awful business practices, appalling treatment of factory and retail workers and their misappropriation of Christianity for profit?

I am not criticizing you and this question is meant with the best of intention, just wondering if you have any thoughts about how to make budget-conscious shopping and ethical shopping work together? I ask because I struggle with it myself and it is part of why I withdrew from the blogosphere for a while and have withdrawn from fashion blogging altogether...

  27. Your option #1 is one of my favorite bags. I bought it last year in cobalt blue, and am carrying it right now. It's one of my most frequently rotated-into-my-wardrobe bags, and I literally get compliments on it every time I go out. I've been dying to buy it in another color, and have both the purple and the tan on my Target wishlist right now. I can't decide!

  29. So after seeing this, I think I'm actually going to get bag number one, except in purple. This is a great post, thanks for leading me to the perfect and affordable bag! Following you now on GFC and Bloglovin'!

  30. Carried #1 around in my cart yesterday, but I put it back. Although super cute and the exact color and style I am searching for for fall, I couldn't allow myself to spend $40 on a Target bag! LOL I really like #3 too!

  31. Hannah, there's a growing number of us shifting to slow fashion, including me. There are blogs that focus on that movement. I'm about to revamp my wardrobe. That is reduce the number of clothing pieces, shop only quality items and start knitting. Project 333 website is a good place to start. The Vivienne Files website shows many inspirations on mixing accent pieces with a small basic wardrobe.
