On Belts...

This was one of those no-brainer outfits.  Take a neutral dress and throw on my current-favorite-of-the-moment green belt and call it an outfit.

A lot of you ask about my belting, particularly with this belt because of how I loop it.  Like, do I buy belts extra large just so I can loop them?  No, I buy them so that they fit around my hips which is larger than my waist, so I loop the belt because it's too long for my waist.  But it's makes for a fun effect, doesn't it?

Here's another tip though:  Get a leather puncher for $8.  If you look closely there are two different types of holes in this belt because I used a leather puncher to create more holes to help with sizing.  I do this with most of my belts so that I can wear them around both my hips and my waist.  Or you can look for a belt like this one or this one that already has holes all the way around.

  6. Any chance you could do a few posts on how to wear belts sometime? Not the regular old through-the-belt-loops, but how to add them to dresses and wear over tops... how to pick the best widths and colors (etc). I'd love to know how to wear them with pizzazz!

  8. Love this casual look Audrey. Definitely one of my fav's. I need to get a leather puncher as I have belts that I don't wear because I have to add holes to them.

  9. Thanks for the tip about the leather puncher, that's going right onto my Amazon wishlist! I would also love to see a post with tips for belting different types of outfits. I have been trying to add belts over tops and dresses, but I never feel like I'm quite doing it right. And yours always look perfect with your outfits!

I've used my "Crop-a-Dile" from scrapbooking to punch holes in shoe straps and belts before when I need some more holes...it works perfectly! Love all your cute stripe picks! =)

  11. I do the same thing where I add additional holes to my belts to be able cinch them tighter except I use the lazy girl's leather puncher - a hammer & a large sized nail. :)

  12. i never realized that your belts were longer. this is a great idea to be able to have one that works at your hips and waist.

  13. Wow, thanks for including the link to the leather puncher, I'll definitely be getting one!

  14. A leather puncher! Why didn't I think of that?! I have the same problem with belts needing to be longer for my hips, and shorter for my waist.

  15. I like how the belt adds a pop of color to your basic outfit. I need to get better with belts... so lazy.

  17. I need a leather puncher so bad! Way too many belts sitting idle without that one necessary punched hole! Thanks for sharing Audrey :)

  19. Oh the leather puncher sounds like a great idea! I'm often sitting in the kitchen with a chopping board and a pair of scissors trying to put an extra hole into a belt when I decide I want to wear it on my waist and not my hips, haha!

  20. I find a hammer, nail, and work bench also does the job of adding extra holes to the belt. :)

  28. I immediately clicked on the hole-puncher link and one is on its way to me now :)
I have a gorgeous leopard print, calf-hair belt that I can only wear on my hips because the holes don't extend far enough. I was hesitant to use the hammer and nail method, lest I ruin the belt. Now I don't have to worry and I can buy any belt I want! Thanks, Audrey!

  29. Who'd have thought it was as simple a leather puncher. I never would have thought of that. Brilliant!

  30. haha, i've used a regular paper hole puncher (not the 3-hole one) to add extras to my belts. glad i'm not alone.

  31. I have learned so much from your blog! Thank you so much!

  32. Yes! I use a leather puncher for my belts as well - but I need to get a few more belts in a larger size to fit around my hips. i'm not usually a hip belter (usually, I just belt my dresses at the waist), but I'd like to try the look out as well. I'll need to hit up the thrift store or Target clearance to see if they have anything that will work! :)
