Fair Wear

YESSSSSS.  I've been growing out my hair and it's finally long enough to stay in a ponytail.  Barely.  But, I'll take it.  Everyday I want to chop it off, but then I just look at Merrick's hair as inspiration and hold on for one more day.  *Cue Wilson Phillips*

Once July hit and life finally settled down the first thing I wanted to do was shop.  One swoop around Marshall's and $16 later I knocked one item off my wish list--a black maxi dress.  Score!  Just as I was experimenting with my hair and trying on this dress B texted me from work saying he had free tickets to the fair, so this is how I went.  Like I said before, maxi dresses are perfect for pretty much any occasion which is why I wanted to add a black one to my arsenal.  Maybe I was overdressed, especially compared to the MANY see-through tops, crop tops, and butt cheek exposing shorts that we saw.  But hmm...possibly overdressed or exposed butt cheeks?  Sounds like a toss-up to me.

Below are a million black maxi dresses.  (Okay, just eight...and technically number 5 is navy.)  The details of black dresses do NOT show up well unless you see close ups, but all the dresses in the bottom row have a bit more special detailing at the necklines.  All are from Kohl's, Target, Old Navy, and Forever 21.

  2. You look CLASSY, which is never overdressed! :-) Classy is always appropriate. I'll take classy over see-through tank tops and booty shorts any day.

  3. Random question - How tall are you? I always find it helpful to know how tall someone is when they are wearing a maxi dress because I am only 5'1 and its been an uphill battle finding a dress that doesn't need alterations.

  4. I've been reading this blog for a while and I love the ideas you give me! As a teacher, I can not afford to go out and buy every new piece of clothing I would like to, but I have learned how to mix it up! Thanks =)

I really adore this outfit. Both pieces (a maxi and a denim jacket) are my go to all summer long.

  12. I just wore a black maxi dress last week for my style post! I love mine, and even more so because it is from the 1970's and I got it for $1! I absolutely love how you styled it (I used a denim jacket too! Channeling my inner Audrey!) And that necklace is to die for. Your hair also looks so adorable in a pony!

  15. Before reading what you wrote, I thought, wow, I've never seen Audrey with her hair up! Good reason why. I'm trying to grow mine out too...and everyday I want to chop it off...like EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. I try to look at picture of when my hair was long and remember that I do like long hair...I'll cue Wilson Phillips as well.

I'm looking for a black maxi dress too! I would like one with at least a cap sleeve...and a wrap top so I cans still nurse the baby in it...I know, I'm so picky! I'm watching for one at target to go in sale, then hopefully I'll like it! Otherwise I may have to try and sew one!

  24. Such a cute look! I'm really pale, so I often steer away from all black items but I love how the jean jacket breaks up the black and how classic it still it. Definitely putting one on my shopping list!

  30. Your little ponytail is the CUTEST. Seriously girl, could you BE any more gorgeous?! I don't think so. I would love to get a cute, simple black maxi dress - I had one but I accidentally shrunk it in the wash and it looks SUPER ugly and unflattering now :( The third one you listed above is perfect - I may need to look it up!!

  37. I have discovered your blog in the last week or so and am loving reading, and going back through many of your older posts! So much inspiration here!
I love your series on remixing! The tips are so sensible and it has so changed my shopping experiences already, I have adopted so many of your ideas and I'm loving having a plan! :)
I'm in Australia so we're experiencing cold weather and I find my winter wardrobe hardest to style but I've been inspired to change up some of my spring dresses, and add a warm cardi and boots and it has been awesome.
    Thank you.

  42. I've convinced myself that as a relatively short woman (5ft2in) I wouldn't look good in a maxi dress. But I think they might be useful at work, since I'd like to be more modestly dressed at work. Okay for short folks like me?

  43. I've been wanting to get a black maxi too! Talk about versatile! I can't even pick a favorite from the ones you've provided. I love 1,2,4 and 7!
