Protection

side view since some of you ask for those...

Whoa whoa whoa whoa.  I am utterly humbled and grateful for--as someone described it--the GINORMOUS group hug that you guys gave me yesterday.  As if I needed anymore proof to confirm this: you guys are seriously amazing.  I was overwhelmed having received more comments than I ever have in my life, and ones that were all so caring and thoughtful and kind!  I can't thank you enough.  So uh...maybe now is a good time to tell you that the real reason I wrote all that stuff yesterday to see what kind of post would get the most comments.  KIDDINGGGGGGG.  Totally, TOTALLY kidding.  I really did write it simply to say thank you, and then you guys gave me even more reason to say it!

Kinda hard to transition from that to clothes, but here we are with my white skirt.  I go into protective beast mode when I wear my white skirt or my white jeans.  I am hilariously clumsy, and I know that you are all jealous that you don't walk into door frames and walls like I do on a regular basis.  We have a special bond, me and door frames.  And if I'm that clumsy with stationary things, imagine how I do with things that involve more coordination, like getting food into your mouth.  So I go into protective beast mode to protect my white clothes from...well, from myself.  Makes perfect sense to me.

All that said, any of you dare own a white skirt?  If you own one and have little kids you get extra points.

It's hard to tell below, but number four has really pretty cutout detailing at the bottom!  I also love number one.  Maxi skirts = the win, and off-white helps conceal dirt a little better than pure white.  It also comes in a beautiful pink or pretty aqua-ish blue-ish thing.  (Ha.)  Also, number three comes in a nice happy yellow!

  1. I have a rule that I never ever wear white. Not only is it in danger of myself, but also my 3 year old and dog (and sometimes even my husband). White is just one thing I cannot, in good conscience, do. Those poor white garments wouldn't stand a chance haha.

  2. I almost bought white jeans yesterday. I really really really want them and I've successfully worn white shorts (while chasing the kids at the park nonetheless!) but jeans seem like so much more fabric to mess up. But I REALLY want them. haha! Also, I feel slightly judged when wearing white. That's weird, I know, but I always feel like everyone is side-eying me, just hoping I spill juice or sit on bird poop. :)

I seriously done get things like the GOMI or other places that take the time to rash talk people. Don't people have better things to do with their time? So sorry about other people's stupidity, and so glad so many readers were there to support you! Love this skirt today too and have a similar on to number four, which reminds me I need to wear that again :)

  4. I totallyyyyy get the white jeans vs. white shorts thing. I am much quicker to wear white shorts for that exact reason. I even went blueberry picking with my friend's 15 month old, and besides shoveling handfuls of dirt and sticks into his mouth and swallowing them (true story) he also wiped his dirty shoes all over my shorts. But i didn't even care because for some reason they seemed like they could handle it while I wouldn't have dared do that with a white skirt or jeans.

  5. I own loads of white things - tops, skirts, pants, blazers - and have been accused of possessing a preternatural ability to keep them spotless. I do have kids but they're older (8 and 10) and a dog but he doesn't visibly shed (Australian cattle dog). That said, I've probably now cursed myself and will permanently stain something white in the next week or so. LOL!

More group hug vibes coming your way from my humble neck of the woods. I applaud your courage and strength of character; I don't think I would have reacted as graciously as you. :D

  6. Bonus points for me with kids and a dog, lol! I do love my white skirt, but I am always really careful. I love the way you tied your shirt too. Heather

  7. Super cute! I recently bought some white shorts after seeing you wear some white (shorts? pants? I can't remember..), and let me say... I understand the protective beast mode you go into. I wore the white shorts to church, and as we were heading inside, I warned my husband that he MUST tell me if anything got on my shorts. Hahaha.
I felt springy and cute though!

  8. I read in Real Simple magazine that Scotch Guarding your white clothing items helps. I've been hosing all my stuff down ever since. Works like a champ, I'm not so anxious about rocking white anymore!

  9. I do the same when I wear my newly purchased white pants. I actually had to pep talk myself into wearing them, saying "nina - you bought them PUT THEM ON!".

Love this look - I'm obsessed with tying up a button down or tshirt over a skirt or dress!

  10. There was this one magical day a couple of years ago when I wore a white dress. (And held a bouquet.)

But in general, I think wearing even a white blouse simply taunts the coffee-splash god.

Also, because I didn't comment on the previous post: your blog is joyful, genuine, and intelligent. It doesn't get more stylish than that. Plus, you always look pretty damn cute.

  11. I am obsessed with white jeans and have two pair of them so no matter what I spill, I have a clean pair!

  12. I love the chambray button-down with the flowing white skirt--nice juxtaposition of structure and movement.

I have a pair of white linen cropped pants and a four year old--although the two are almost never seen together. I love the white pencil skirt, and I am contemplating making a white skirt this summer from the abundance of white eyelet fabric I inherited from my mom.

Does your skirt have a built-in lining, or does it require a slip? This question plagues me every time I consider the aforementioned sewing project.

  13. I'm totally doing your 7 X 7 and trying to decide if I want to include white shorts or pants! Sure wish I had a white skirt!

  14. I don't own a white skirt anymore, but I recently purchased my first pair of white pants...EVER. I'm both scared and excited about wearing them. :)

  15. I happen to think you have fabulous style. You inspire looks for every day women, not models in a magazine or snooty fashion bloggers. Thanks for that!

  16. Extra points for me! I have two young kids (1 and 3) and I love wearing my white skirt :)
White is so cool and comfortable in hot weather (although it's winter right now here in Australia... brrr)

Great look! I did a post today about dressing all white. I am extra clumsy (some days I am dirty even before I leave for work) and I have a 5 year old so white is not a color I wear as a bottom much.

  19. I've been sporadically blog-stalking you for a couple of years now and recently noticed how your style is evolving. I've noticed the same thing about myself as well, so it's encouraging to see it in others. You'd look good in anything, but I love your creativity and edge. Thanks for putting it out there :)

  20. I wish I owned white bottoms!! I own hardly any white but white jeans are at the TOP of my wishlist. All I can seem to find are jeggings, which look terrible on me!! Do you have any suggestions of places to look that sell real white jeans that aren't at all transparent or the thin stretchy jegging material?

  21. Hi Audrey, I'm Claudia from Italy and this is the first time I comment on your blog.
I really like your style because is easy, simple and nice. You don't try to look as a model or don't take pics of yourself trying to look as a "femme fatale" or whatever. I really appreciate that you still keep your blog basic, because this clearly is your comfort zone and people get it. You're not a "mannequin", you're a PERSON with a personal and colourful style and you are always friendly and respectful here on your blog, so don't give a... [well you know what I mean] to bad comments and keep doing what you're doing with your lovely smile.

I bought my first pair of white jeans this year and I'm the same way. I have three kids so I only wear them when we're going out and there's less chance that they will be climbing on me.

  23. I don't have a white skirt but am obsessed with white jeans and white shorts! I think they look so crisp. I used to have a pair of really casual white capris from Ann Taylor. They made me feel like I was on a yacht in Greece! I was very sad the day I got rid of them. I like skirts 1 and 2. Maxis are my current weakness. I like your entire outfit in this post. The chambray shirt is perfect!
Oh, no kids but I do have two labrador retrievers. That should count for something!

  24. Us dog and cat owners deserve extra points too ;) Somehow my little dog translates white pants are a great place to rub dirty paws.

  25. I could read tons of fashion blogs but you are my go-to blog for fashion. It's because I love your style and your look is something that I could pull off myself. You are thorough and give me so many options for the real world that I live in. You are adorable!

  26. I bought white jeans this weekend (and am wearing them today) - and already have white shorts. Oh, and I have 3 kids!
I love your clothing selections and I ESPECIALLY appreciate the budget-friendly pieces you highlight. Thanks for taking the time to do this blog!!

  27. I can't do white pants/skirts. I was looking at white shorts yesterday at Old Navy, and then remembered why I don't own any. I walk into doors, and walls, and tables, and chairs, and other people. Plus I spill things, or sit in messes. Not practical at all, but they look awesome!

  28. I used to wear white skirts quite a lot, but now I have little kids so I avoid white! :-) I did just get the cutest denim pencil skirt though. I can't wait to wear it! Have to shave my Sasquatch legs first.

  29. Love this look! I might try this for the weekend! Would be cute with a long skirt too.

  30. Hey Lauren! I always include links to similar items at the bottoms of my posts. I know on my last few white jean ones I linked to Old Navy ones. Some Old Navy ones are thin and stretchy but my pair is thick. I'm not sure what the ones that I link to are like since I haven't tried those first hand. But if you can get free shipping and are close enough to return in store you should try them.

  33. I walk into and whack my hands/arms into door frames ALL THE TIME. My Mom once broke her nose while closing a closet door, so I blame genetics.

  34. Ahh if only Old Navy jeans fit me! They have so many great colors but I've tried several sizes and fits and none of them work :( Thank you for the suggestions! I'll look pack at some of your other posts for ideas!

  35. Have you tried Levi's jeans? People still swear by them for their durability, men and women! I haven't been in the market for new jeans so I haven't tried them for women yet, but they are the ONLY brand my husband will buy now.

  36. I don't dare for white skirt with kids. That said, I do have a pair of white skinny jeans.

  37. Lauren, I have that problem with white jeans too. I just found some about a month ago at Kohls. Sonoma life+style modern fit skinny. They are cut generously so I was able to wear same size as I usually do instead of 1-2 sizes up for skinny jeans(I have athletic legs). Very opaque. Even though they're skinny jeans, they feel like they have more stretch than most skinny jeans(it says 2% spandex on the label which is typical for most jeans). http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1310361/sonoma-life-style-modern-fit-skinny-jeans.jsp

  38. Oh Levi's! Ill have to try some!

  39. No skirt yet, but I have white shorts that, I swear, I can never wear for more than an hour. I tried yesterday to wear them, only to pop a button (while being an idiot and refusing to unbutton them just to put them on). Today's try (after fixing the button) and I spilled raspberry dressing all over them within an hour of putting them on.

    Thank goodness bleach exists!

  42. I love white skirts! I really really like the number 4- Old Navy had a similar one recently but they were sold out of the white in my size and I was SUPER bummed out about it :(

  43. I'm SO glad I'm not the only one that runs into door frames! Its super embarrassing and I can't figure out how/why I do it. So I also understand the white skirt/food fear! Love this look though, glad you decided to trust yourself and go for it!

  44. I just bought myself my first pair of white jeans last night! Eek! I spent the rest of the evening listing places I can and can't wear my jeans to. As in, I can wear them to friends/family's houses, but not to pubs etc. But for someone who manages to stain things just by looking at them, this is going to be a massive challenge wearing white jeans! I'm doing ok so far with my white t-shirt. I guess we have to grow up sooner or later and wear grown up clothes that don't get dirty? Or is that just a pipe-dream?

  45. I bought a pair of white pants, took them home, tried them on, thought about my 4 year old son, and then returned them. I also run into door frames.
