In a Flash

I wore this to a bridal shower over the weekend.  This dress tends to be too short for my general comfort level in terms of accidentally flashing people or anything equally embarrassing.  So unless I'm wearing it with tights and boots (like here) I save it for all-girl events in case I have an unfortunate mishap.  (Remember, I'm clumsy.)  I already have an embarrassing story in the books about tubing down a very populated river in a halter bandeau two-piece, flipping over, almost drowning, and resurfacing with my top completely down for all the children and drunk adults to see.  It was classy times all around.

I think one story about flashing people is enough for a lifetime for me.  But it doesn't mean I don't want to hear any of your embarrassing stories!  Spill 'em if you should feel so brave.  It'll make for good Wednesday reading for us all.  :D

  3. I just bought a handful of cute LOFT and Target dresses for this summer. It never occurred to me to wear them in the fall too. Now I feel better about my investment! :)

  4. Do you remember where you got that brown belt?

  5. A thin pair of bike shorts under shorter sundresses always works well :) I like them because it allows me to still play with the kids or sit on a blanket in the grass, but still look cute and feminine.

  6. Love that dress! I'm wearing a floral skirt that I bought after your post. I was amazed at how much I had that went with all the different colors in it when I started putting my outfit together this morning. Inspirational as always Audrey!

  7. I'll be brave- I've done the "skirt tucked into the pantyhose" thing. I can't remember where it happened, but I remember the horror I felt when someone FINALLY pointed it out after walking around for 15 minutes or so...

  8. yes I have a nude pair of these, similar to spanks that I wear a lot under mine. I have two young kids so I am always moving!

  9. That dress is so cute, I love the print!

  10. Haha oh no! I'm totally paranoid about that! Especially ever since Rachel Green walked down the aisle with her pink bridesmaid dress tucked into her underwear.

  11. A. Love the dress and B. I have the SAME STORY about a halter top that decided to malfunction on a river in TX. I just caught it before I flashed my husband, brother, brother in law, all their friends and half of TX. It was still embarrassing.

When my husband and I first moved to Florida, I was having a blast in the ocean in my triangle bikini. I stood up from the waves and hubby was screaming at me from the shore. It wasn't until he started gesturing that I realized it was because the girls had popped out of the tiny triangles! Not that many people noticed but let's just say I haven't worn that bikini since.

  14. I've somehow managed to avoid flashing people up to this point in my life, but I hear you on the skirt length! I love my new maxi skirt for just that reason. And I love jean jackets with dresses!

  15. No flashing stories for me thank goodness lol! I really love your looks. The pumps give the casual look just enough "umph!" So glad I found your blog!

  16. no flashing story but I do remember being out one night and I had to go to the bathroom soo bad to the point where the first door I saw I ran into it. I didn't lock the door like I usually do, or notice the urinal on the way. Needless to say the guy walking in got more than he expected. The smile from him that I got when I finally exited didn't help either!

  17. all I wear is maxi dresses because of this fear! it seems that most dresses in the juniors dept. are "flash" designed, I dont know why

  18. I agree. I have 3 pairs of black bike shorts that I wear under shorter skirts. My 4 year old wears bike shorts under her skirts and dresses to, so I don't have to worry about her flashing people. :)

  19. Your comfort level aside, it doesn't look too short in the pic! Love that necklace

  20. A very comfy outfit for bridal shower. Liking the smaller floral prints. Is it wedding season already? LOVE this time of the year.

I had a Marilyn Monroe moment once while pushing a child in a stoller on a windy day at the Oceanfront.. Needless to say I stoped traffic and never wore that skirt to work again.. ( I owned a store at the beach at the time)!

  23. $3 basic knit shorts from Forever 21 are a staple in my closet. I put them on under all my dresses and skirts so I don't have a "mishap". :) Cute dress!!

  24. I'm not brave enough to share my stories, but I do love your dress :)

  25. I have a cute floral dress that is yeah, too short for church! LOL Husband loves it for dates though. I'm super conscious of potential wardrobe malfunctions - I haven't had any that I can remember. If I have, nobody told me. I'm good with that. Ignorance is bliss. :-)

  26. Fprtunately, I've never had such problems with dresses/skirts because I feel best in knee length styles (I'm super self consicous since I saw a picture of myself in super short shorts). I just don't feel good in anything shorter
There was this time I was in denial about having to buy bikinis in plus sizes. A wave caught me and while the bottom was fine, I never saw the top part of it again. I ran to my towel to get my cover up with both my arms around my chest. Classy times :) I was later told by a store clerk that too small sizes don't stand a fighting chance against bigger breasts/booties

  27. I've determined that it's pretty much impossible NOT to flash something (whether it be people or fish in the lake) when you're tubing. Needless to say, I know how embarrassing it is!

  28. Yikes! I suppose that makes sense though... haha

  29. OMG!!! Hahaha that is unreal! Thank you for sharing!

  30. I KNOWWWWW--the ocean breeze is the worst for embarrassing wardrobe stories!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pretty dress! It doesn't look too short at all, but I definitely know the feeling. The worst is with really floaty fabric because then even if the dress is longer the wind will blow it up! I walk to work across a big bridge that gets pretty windy, and I've definitely had some moments where all the cars driving by saw my butt. Oops! That's why I wear bike shorts under dresses now!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Super cute! I love your hair too! You should try these lace bike shorts they sell at American Apparel they've been a real life saver for me and my shorter dresses!

  33. at work, WORK, my skirt ripped.... and my BUTT was visible. like, bare butt ( i was wearing a thong -- tmi? sorry. very important to the story) but I couldn't feel it... still no idea how i couldn't feel it or didn't know it ripped. anyway, one of my MALE coworkers had to tell me, as he walked behind me. most embarrassing day of my life!

wearing a backpack and a dress. Apparently the backpack made my dress bunch up and I was ordering lunch at taco bell on campus... The lunch crowd at the University saw it. Granny panties. BTW I tried to go onto GoChic, and even requested an invitation but I didn't get it yet. I am seriously waiting to see how you styled the striped blazer :o)

  35. Haha. I have a maxi skirt story. I was riding down an escalator at an airport wearing a new maxi skirt. I felt a tug and looked down and the skirt was stuck on the inside of a step. I tried ripping it out before I got to the bottom but I was too late. I got to the bottom trying to free my skirt and it ripped half of it off of me before I , and several random helpers, could free myself, exposing my bare butt (wearing a thong) to the 50 or so fellow escalator riders..... And I was on a work trip.

  36. It seems like many of us feel your pain! At a wine tasting in napa my skirt caught the wind and flipped up to reveal my derrière to everyone there! Anyway I'm glad you broke out this dress, I love the colours.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yep. I wear bike shorts under most short skirts and dresses too. Allows me to be cute yet not have to worry too much about flashing anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Such a cute dress! When I first scrolled down, I thought that it was kind of on the short side for you, because you don't tend to wear things that short normally, BUT IT LOOKS GOOD, GIRLFRIEND. It still passes the fingertip rule, so you're all good. I still like short things (though I normally wear flats with them) and I probably flash more people than I should sometimes :/ I'm not going to be young forever, so I might as well flaunt it while I still can.... though I'll reserve it for when I'm not with the kids ;)

  39. I haven't commented in a while, but you must know, I adore your posts. And I never say the word "adore" unless I really mean it. :) So, in terms of short dresses, why oh why are all the cute dresses so short these days?! I have a closet chock full of them and hardly any all girl events to attend. lol Embarrassing story: I once came out of the bathroom at church with my dress tucked into my underwear and tights. haha! So much for using tights to stay modest.

  40. I love your dress, Audrey! I have a very similar one from Target (same length) that I think would look fantastic with a denim jacket like your outfit here!

I used to be super self-conscious about wearing dresses that were anywhere above my knee, but I'm learning to love the way they look on me. I always (ALWAYS) wear biking shorts or Spanx or something under my dresses for modesty/chub rub reasons, so I'm not as nervous about flashing anyone (plus I kind of have no shame about that stuff). I'm typically a flats girl, too, so that helps my legs look less long and revealed, I think.

  41. My story is similar to yours: I was in Michigan for a month-long summer course in college. We went to a beach on Lake Michigan and a bunch of us were throwing a football around in the water. I jumped up and my bandeau top went down... oh, and did I mention our professors were there too??? Mor.ti.fied.

    ReplyDelete
  42. BTW, love the outfit! I have been on a hunt for a flattering denim jacket for months!

  43. SO glad you asked everyone to share embarrassing stories. Hil.lar.i.ous. Cannot even stop laughing to type more.

  44. I came back from a school trip to the beach, and was on all fours removing people's luggage from the bus's storage compartments (you know, the ones that are on the bottom of the bus that you get to from outside). My teacher tapped me on the shoulder and told me he'd do the rest. I didn't realize why until I remembered that I was still wearing my tiny shorts from the beach-- I was practically mooning my whole class AND the teacher!! Aghhh!!!

I love the denim jacket here. I never considered buying one because I usually wear jeans and don't want to double denim, but perhaps someday I'll get one… because I just love how you've made it look!
