Celebrations

This weekend was packed.  We celebrated a number of things all weekend, from Father's day, to a couple of birthdays, to my brother getting engaged!  I wore this dress for my brother's engagement party, and apparently maxi dresses are on point right now because four other girls showed up in maxi dresses too.  Smart choice.

To me, maxi dresses balance out my indecision.  If I'm going to have a long day and I want to wear a dress, I worry about the 20+ degree temp swings here in San Diego that can happen within a day.  But with maxi dresses I don't risk being too cold with bare legs once the temps dip at night, and I'm not too hot in the middle of the day like I would be if my legs were suffocated in pants.  Also, I'm always worried about being overdressed or underdressed (I'm the worst at figuring out what's "appropriate" for an event), and maxi dresses seem to perfectly teeter between dressed up and casual.  Maybe no one else thinks that, but do me a favor and keep letting me think that because it helps me stress less about what to wear.  Like, birthday party at the beach?  Oh, I'll just throw on a maxi dress.  Bridal shower?  Maxi dress. Engagement party?  Maxi dress.  Nap time?  Pajama-like maxi dress.  Works every time.

And now here's an overwhelming number of maxi dresses!  Ha.  To overwhelm you more, everything in the top row comes in multiple colors too.

  1. I love maxi dresses! I only own two at the moment but you're right. I wear them when I'm afraid it'll too cold for a shorter dress and want to be dressed for any occasion.

  2. I had a similar weekend (Father's Day & birthday celebrations) and I wore a printed maxi too. :) You're right - they are perfect for every occasion (even Story Hour, where I have to sit on the floor). This is the one I wore:

  3. After your first post about this maxi dress and how the colors were great - I bought it from Piperlime too! I have already worn it to two baby showers, birthday dinner for my brother and wine night with the girls! I completely agree with you on it being great for 'I'm not sure of the dressiness of the situation' situation!

Love it with the jean jacket! Super cute! :)

  4. You are so right about maxis! They are my answer to what to wear when you don't know what to wear as well. Love this one!

  6. I love maxi dresses for the same reason! They're good for everything. :) Also, this is my first time on your blog and I love it! I'm not good at putting outfits together and your advice is so practical and your outfits are so cute! :)

  7. I LOVE a good maxi dress! I have four or five already and worried a couple of years back that I probably shouldn't add any more to my collection because they were bound to go 'out' soon. If anything, I now think they're bigger than ever!

  8. That dress is so pretty, but you have got to stop making me want a jean jacket.

  10. My family keeps calling me a hippie because I LIVE in maxis! And I get them from thrift stores and Ross all the time--cheaper and still so chic! I wear them for date nights, BBQs, and weddings!

  12. Audrey, what do you think about maxi dresses for petite women? I've been told they're not a good idea, because they can overwhelm your figure. But if you had the right print? Maybe a chevron one?

  13. Do you order a lot online? I only ask because I really want the denim jacket in white but not sure what the fit will be. It says it's online only. Also how is Target's return policy? Do you mind telling what size you have on in the picture? I have a similar build to yours. Thank you so very much!

  14. Yay! I wore an orange maxi dress with denim jacket and beige sandals to church yesterday! And I agree with all the different ocassions. I had to go to my MIL's church's women's tea and vintage fashion show last month. Not really knowing what they expected there I wore something similar. The dress is dressy if everyone's in dresses and skirts while the denim keeps it casual if everyone's in jeans or pants.

  17. I order online a ton. I found this jacket to run small, and I ordered an XS. Target's return policy is laid out on their website. But basically, 90 days to return either by mail or in store. However, you should verify all of those details on their website since I do not work at Target. :)

  18. I've seen them on petite women and they look great, but I've also seen them not look so good on some petite women. A large part of that is of course all about fit. That's true for a woman of any height and size though. They definitely would need to be fitted so that they don't overwhelm you and the hem needs to be at the proper length so that you don't look like you're drowning. And a la Stacy & Clinton, a good rule of thumb is for the print to match the size of the woman--smaller woman, smaller print, otherwise that overwhelming your figure thing will probably happen. Similarly, larger women can go for larger prints.

  22. I reallyreallyreally want a maxi dress but I'm having a hard time finding something that flatters my curves, accommodates my bust, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Any suggestions? Being able to wear a real bra with said maxi dress is a MUST.

  31. This summer is all about the maxi for me! I think I have at least 10 now! I love how versatile they can be. Casual or dressy. Print/Solid. Black or bold. A new wardrobe staple.
