Cargo Vests

Sooooo, while I have every intention of pairing this dress with all of my colorful cardigans and necklaces, I'm trying to get over my fear of all neutral outfits with this one.  It's dumb, but I really do feel very self-conscious about posting outfits that lack color.  Plus, I wanted to wear my cargo vest.

For those of you who are newer to the blog, I used to think vests were dumb, assuming that the lack of sleeves to keep you warm would be pointless.  Little did I know that a cargo/army/utility vest is an incredibly versatile completer piece and it can go with almost anything.  Dresses, jeans, plain or patterned tees and tanks, errythang.  Hrmm...maybe a cargo vest recap is in order?

Anyway, here's a bunch of options!  I always get asked about this thing and for a while options were limited and it sold out like hotcakes. I guess other stores finally caught on because this season there are tons and tons of affordable options.  Almost everything is from Forever 21, Kohl's, or JCPenney except for #8, from my beloved new favorite store.

Cute vest. I think I'd pair it with a linen pant in white.

I used to feel the same about vests until reading your blog. Now I own two (including your #3 link!) and I love them and wear them all the time. Thanks for making me realize the awesomeness of vests!

That dress is a perfect example of how it helps to see an item on someone. I looked at the photo from the store and was kind of meh about it, but I love it on! Must get!

  10. No idea because I don't own it. Sorry! There are measurements on the site for each size, though. What I would do with those kinds of measurements is get a garment that fits me well and measure the shoulders straight across to compare it to the measurements for the vest. With the measurements for the bust I compare it to my actual bust size, knowing that if I have a 34" bust and the bust is 34" it'll fit just perfectly. If I want extra space I might size up, etc.

Also, email Audrey from Conversation Pieces. She is fantastic with customer service, and when I was questioning my measurements for the floral skirt she helped me out and the skirt fit me perfectly. Good luck!

  13. Oooh I think I need to finally get my hands on one of these - my army green jacket is definitely one of my wardrobe staples, but going sleeveless means I could wear the style year round :) And copy all of your cute outfits.

  14. Love #8 too! I've been looking for an army vest for ages, however I'm really petite and so many look like I'm swimming in it!

  19. Oh, my goodness. I love sweater vests, because they're an extra bit of warmth (even though I live in Southern California), they make me feel smarter, and they go with anything. I really love them if they have pockets. Ergo, this post is spectacular.

  25. I'm so glad that more vests are coming out. I really like mine even though like you said, at first I was like...what, why? but now...I want more please.

  26. I just discovered your blog today (and sent a link to my 18-year-old daughter) as I was searching for inspiration on repurposing my wardrobe and organizing my closet to get rid of stuff that just doesn't look good.

I have looked around a lot and love it! A new faithful reader here. One quick question - where is the larger caramel colored tote bag from that I've seen in so many of your photos? It's exactly what I've been looking for!

  27. Yes! I love my vest! I had one that was tan last year, but it just wasn't versatile like my olive Old Navy one is. I just like how it adds a little something extra to an outfit! I'm really self-conscious about wearing sleeveless dresses and tops by themselves, but I feel completely comfortable with it when I throw my vest on with them...kind of weird, but it works, haha!

  28. Welch to the blog, Karla! So glad you're enjoying it :) As for the tote, if you look at the bottom of the posts there should be a link for where to find the item. If the link has expired, try a newer post with the tote in it.

  29. I'm still not 100% converted to the whole vest thing. Like you say, isn't too cold/too hot for a vest most of the time? I guess it is one of those things I might just have to try for myself.

  30. The JCPenny vest, #3 has a zipper. Be aware it is fitted and possibly junior sizing--so I had to size up 1 size to get the fit I wanted. I was able to seam-ripper the jewel things off the shoulders and then pulled off(barely glued on) without ripping the fabric. I love it.

I tried the Old Navy one, in the fall, but it ran a full size large(the smallest size was sold out) and hubby asked if I was going fishing(which neither of us do). There is no 'fishing' mistake this time around.
