Camping to Casual Chic

If outfits were a song, this would be MY JAM!  Skinny jeans, a graphic tee, and a blazer.  Mm mm mm!  I wore this outfit to an event at a very large college campus, so flats were in order for navigating the expansive campus.

I brought this tee on the trip I took two weeks ago to the remote island.  It may sound glamorous, but it was actually a camping type of situation which is why there is no internet or phone reception.  I wore the same base of skinny jeans and the tee on the island, but instead with a cardigan and TOMs like below:

All I did was swap the cardigan for a blazer and TOMs for some sleek flats, and the outfit went from camping to casual chic.  This is another example illustrating the stuff in BARW Part 4 of the magic of changing up an outfit with a different layering piece and different shoes!

What are your two favorite types of layering pieces?

  1. Ok I've been dying to ask this for a while now. None of your skinny jeans (or jeggings according to your link at the bottom) look super tight on you. They all seem to have a good fit/drape. How do you find that? I'm only 120 lbs but every pair of skinny jeans I find always fit so tight in the legs, let alone the lovely butt fit where panty lines are too obvious. What's your secret??

  3. You can never go wrong with a graphic tee, blazer and jeans! If that's your jam, we might be in the same band!

  4. So cute! You're not the first blogger I've seen with that top. I love how Target clothes/shoes manage to infiltrate so many style blogs.

When it comes to layering, I usually throw things on under tops I wear. I love v-neck tops, because they help me look taller (I need all the help I can get), but they aren't always appropriate for work, so I throw a cami on underneath so I'm not flashing anyone.

  9. Honey, if that's how you dress to go camping, it ain't camping. ;-) Just teasing. It's not how I'd dress to go camping anyway. But I live in the Rockies so our definition of "style" is pretty different. Old jeans, a fleece hoodie, and Chaco sandals are our go-to camping outfit!

Both outfits are absolutely adorbs though! Love the method of changing up outfits by layering.

  11. How do you find potential in graphic tees, woman?! I would totally have passed this by as not my thing had I been at Target. I really need to get over my hang-up with graphic tees and just embrace them. After all, they look so effortless and hip with a blazer and I love me a good blazer! That's my fave type of layering piece, btw, which I explain more fully here: http://myclosetcatalogue.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=1320&action=edit

  14. Exactly! I'm from Colorado as well and camping gear is definitely Chacos or boots. It all gets dirty from the red dirt. But I guess we'd be hiking too.

  15. I love that purple cardigan! Where did you get that?

  16. I'm a big fan of cardigans when it comes to layering. I'm trying to think differently about how I remix items in my wardrobe. I find your blog really helpful.

  22. Haha welllllll, I stalk Kendi's blog. I saw her wear this and ran to Target to find it. I loved it that much!

  23. Hahaha no, it was not a real camping trip. That's why I said it was a "camping type of situation" rather than saying I went camping. :) It was a camping retreat site with cabins but no electricity except in the bathroom area and some select meeting rooms.

  24. Oh, she's adorable! I may have to stalk her too! :D

  25. I remember when I saw this tee on Kendi I instantly wanted it, then I couldn't find it any of my local Targets. Then literally the same exact day that I purchased another grey graphic tee I spotted this one at my local store but didn't get it because I wanted to be "responsible." But now you are making me want it again!

  26. Ah see that sort of makes sense. So casual and outdoorsy. Like a YMCA type retreat? We did a lot of those when I was back home. I would still probably wear jeans and Chacos, but now I'd dress them up with a colorful tunic and a statement necklace.

  32. Just wanted to say THANK YOU! I recently lost some weight and decided to *finally* get my butt in gear and get a grown-up wardrobe pulled together. I was totally lost until I found your blog. Between your wardrobe series and pins I've found about how to dress my body type/colors for my "season", I'm LOVING the new stuff I have - I've got one outfit in particular that I swear makes me instantly look 10lbs thinner. Anyway - you're the best!

  34. Thanks for showing the versatility of basic pieces. As a teacher, my dress code is business casual (and my clothing budget is nonexistent), so I am always looking for ways to dress up or rethink pieces I already own.
