Shoe Talk

Believe or not, not a single item in today's outfit is from Target.  The shock, I know!  Also believe it or not, I did not own a pair of black heels until now.  I know, I know, I didn't own sweaters, I didn't own black heels--how on earth have I been getting dressed?

Now, I'm not gonna lie to you and say these H&M heels are the most comfortable heels or even recommend them to you, but I did try on a bunch of more expensive and better made heels and they just didn't fit my feet as well.  What I will say is that my secret for making all cheap shoes more comfortable is shoe inserts.  I use all sorts of them, like insoles, the ball of foot pad, or heel grippers.  Some people have said that an insole makes the shoe too snug for them which is uncomfortable, but different brands vary in thickness for all of the products so I switch between brands depending how thick or thin I want the padding to be.  They seriously make such a huge difference!  (If you guys want a full blown post on shoe inserts, let me know and I'll put one together.)  Do you use shoe inserts?

Also, I have no idea why but when I upload pics to Blogger it automatically dulls the vibrancy of the colors in my photos.  Like, in these outfit pics on my harddrive this cardigan is more like an electric green but when I upload it to Blogger it mutes the color.  This happens to all of my pictures.  Does anyone know why or have any advice for how to remedy this?

  1. I couldn't do without shoe inserts. They are great for when the shoes get stretched out with wear as well.

  4. I'd love a post on shoe inserts! I never know what kind to buy. Oh and I have the same problem with my photos on Blogger. I've noticed Blogger has been really glitchy in general lately - maybe something to do with all the crazy changes they're making right now?

  5. I neeeed everything in this outfit, wow! Love those shoes, not too high but not too low and the cardigan with the blouse is heaven. I'll have to try out the inserts, I'm the queen of buying cute shoes because they're cheap or going down a size to make them work!

  6. Hello! First of all I just want to say I really like your blog, I'm trying to reinvent my own wardrobe right now and your tips are really helpful and you inspire me! :)

Second, I might know the solution for the trouble you have with your photos. Usually websites use the colour space sRGB but cameras can often shoot in Adobe RGB which contains a greater range of colours than sRGB. The uploader automatically converts your photos to sRGB and that's why they look different. If you want to keep the vibrance you should convert your photos to sRGB before you upload them to your blog. In photoshop you go to "edit" - "convert to profile" and choose sRGB.

You can also (usually) change the colour space in your camera to always shoot with sRGB, I think Adobe RGB is mostly better when printing the photos.

I hope this helped you, I had this problem before when I was posting my photos to a website and this helped me!

  7. I would love a post about shoe inserts! I think I need to buy them because it's so hard to find comfortable shoes for my feet and I end up just wearing the same pair over and over. Also, when I used blogger, I had that same problem. I'm not sure why...Do you upload your photos directly to blogger or do you upload them to flickr and then import them to your posts that way? I think I remember using flickr and the photos were normal again? I could be totally wrong though.

  8. ooh pretty shoes. i have similar shoes from anne klein! i upload photos through flickr and blogger still dims them! probably an image quality problem.

  9. I use a lot of shoe inserts. My feet shrunk a bit after my last pregnancy, so in order to keep all my cute shoes, I need to use inserts!

  10. I'm doing a play right now- in heels! Just silly community theater, but still! This is the first time I have broken out the shoe inserts... I got the gel heel wraps and the front soul piece because the last thing I need is my shoe flying off in the middle of a scene!

Shoe inserts are a must. But I do prefer to buy leather shoes over man made materials (and willing to spend the $$) for a pair of good comfy shoes. I find that leather softens with wear and molds to your feet.

Blogger has been weird lately. I'm considering switching to Wordpress because there is a small part of me thats scared Blogger may go away eventually.

  15. Hi Audrey!

Louise's comment about the sRBG is awesome and super informative! I don't have photoshop so I"m not sure if I could still convert them in iPhoto, but I too have the same problem as you with my food blog. I started uploading pictures to flickr which preserves the color, or if you want to stay with Blogger, I downloaded Picasa for free. You can import your pics into Picasa and then you can access them as a web album in blogger.

Thanks for all the awesome work you do and the info you put together for us! (I would dig a post on shoe inserts. Up until a couple months ago when I wanted to buy a pair of heels, I didn't even know that they existed)

  16. I looove shoe inserts (and lamb's wool in the toe) to make shoes fit better! As for photos, I actually host mine on Flickr and use HTML to embed the image in my post. Blogger's uploader just doesn't do it for me.

  17. I've been thinking lately that I would like to try shoe inserts, but I don't know where to start. I'd love a post on them!

  18. Heck, yes, I use shoe inserts. Even though Houston is a big, fat, lazy car-culture city, I try to walk or bike when I can and inserts are the ONLY way to go. I've actually had a pair of black Naturalizer pumps with a modest 3" heel for over 7 years (I'm not joking), wear them at least three times a week year-round, and they're still kickin' because I swap out the ball-of-foot inserts quarterly, which keeps the interior protected, my icky dancer-feet can go farther and longer during the day, I'm less likely to slip or wobble. And, especially when I worked for Boss Lady, late night cocktail receptions and dinner parties happened often and you just don't choose to look like a schlub when you're surrounded by millionaires in a 12,000 sq. ft. house. Plus, my right foot is about 1/4 size smaller than my left, and a good heel grip makes a world of difference.

  19. Audrey, a post on shoe inserts would be tremendously helpful. Can you also talk about how you take the inserts into account when choosing shoe size?

Love your blog! I have been tuning in ever since I found it a couple months ago.

  20. Everyone should come over to Wordpress and be my neighbor! (Although I did love the simplicity of Blogger when I first started my blog over there).

I just recently found a brand of heel grips that I swear is my holy grail of inserts. I have a short but wide foot so it's always a toss-up whether to get an 8 or a 7.5 in shoe. Bought some Seychelles in 8s from eBay - no way to return or exchange - so I took a chance on some Profoot heel grips from amazon and I love them! Literally shaved off a half size and now I can happily wear my heels.

  21. Ugh, my feet are messed up from years of ballet and modern dance (I majored in dance in college) plus I have plantar fasciitis in my right heel from years of walking around my house barefoot (this is actually a really common ailment for stay at home moms). So, I spend more money on shoes in order to get good support AND I could really use some heel inserts as well. I just don't know where to start!

  22. Love this outfit. Love the blouse with the bright blue cardigan. You're right, the proper insoles make a huge difference.

  23. I'm not a big fan of shoe inserts bc it makes my feet feel weird, sweaty? I dunno just not its normal self. But I will say that sometimes I sacrifice the normal foot feeling for awesomely cute shoes. I did recently find these black pumps from Payless and r comfortable, economically priced, sturdy and above all, cute.

  31. These heels look great! I have double issues with wearing heels - one is that I just am not used to them on myself, so I feel weird and overdressed when I try them with skinny jeans. But this outfit looks awesome, so clearly I need to get over it. And the other issue is comfort - so do help us out with some inserts advice! These look like a really manageable heel height though.

I'd love, love, love a post on shoe inserts. I have some foot issues that make me very picky on the shoes I buy, and lately I've been giving up on cheaper shoes because they just don't have the comfort factor that I need. But - I never thought of shoe inserts! Maybe that's my answer...

I would LOVE a post on insoles! I've been looking at them cross eyed at the stores, trying to find the right ones but I don't know what I'm looking for! I'm a teacher, on my feet all day and some of my shoes have built in insoles and they are comfortable for 12+ hours on my feet but I don't know how to make the rest of my shoes so comfy too. Thanks!

  36. Haha! Have I ever put an outfit together without at least ONE piece from Target? No, I do not think so :)

  37. Hey girl!

First of all, that shirt is one of my favorites of yours. I feel it just goes with so much but looks different every time. Does that make sense? or do I sound like a crazy person? Probably crazy.

Second of all, have you tried using flickr to upload your pictures? I found that pictures are a lot clearer that way than if I just upload them directly to my blog, so maybe that would help with the color too? Worth a shot! Let us know though once you figure something out as we can all learn from one another!

  38. I would LOVE a post on inserts. I struggle between my love of cute shoes and having to be on my feet all day (teacher). Inserts may be my answer!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I TOTALLY thought of you when I was buying them AND when I wrote about how I didn't own a pair until now!

  40. I think I need a pair of simple black pumps too! I only have one pair of black sling backs but they're not that comfortable and not that cute, and I really don't wear heels that often so I don't want to spend too much money on them :(

And weird that blogger dulls the colors, I've never had that happen!

    ReplyDelete
  41. OOh, I will echo the chorus about shoe inserts. I saw some recently and wondered if they were a waste of money. But I also have many pairs of shoes I don't wear much because they are not comfortable, so I'd like to know what to try!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Definitely on board with a shoe insert post! Maybe I'll buy more heels than to wear at work :) I need to buy like 4 pairs for the spring/summer at work.. black pumps, open toe, wedges etc...

I just started wearing shoe inserts recently and I love them. The higher the heels the more tendency there is for your heel to slip out so the insert helps with that, as well as provides cushion for the balls of your feet. I'm pretty short (only 5'4) so I wear heels a lot and this has made a huge difference. There are a lot to choose from so I'd love to hear your insights.

  47. I was cursed with narrow feet, and man, it is the biggest downer! It is so hard to find anything cute and affordable. Apparently, most companies that make narrow shoes think that narrow-footed people have no taste and must look like a frumpy librarian from the 70's. I have used some inserts from Aldo that help a little in some cases. Mostly I tend to live through my daughter who was blessed with normal feet. I love buying cute shoes for her! I would love to hear what you have to say about inserts. Maybe it can help me!

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's frustrating about your photos' colors changing when uploaded to Blogger! I go through Flickr to post my photos into posts... do you upload directly into your Blogger posts? Maybe you should try using a different site and that will help keep the vibrancy?

I love that top, and those heels look cute and comfy! I use shoe inserts with most of my shoes and they are life-savers :)

  49. This is so enlightening! Thank you so much! I'm going to see if I can play around with those settings.

  50. Hm, I have no idea about the blogger issue, but I definitely use inserts. I think my ankles (or achilles) are really small, so no matter what shoe size I try on, my feet slip out of the back. I found heel grippers from Payless to be a perfect solution. I also truly believe that my feet are 8.75 which means I'm either cramped in 8.5s or have room to spare in 9s, so I'll size up and put grippers in for added comfort and to keep my foot in place. I wish I had only known about inserts years ago-- I wouldn't have passed up so many amazing shoes because of a little issue like fit. Ha.

  58. Please post about shoe inserts! I bought these cute flats during a great sale but never wear them because there's a big gap around my heel. Any way to remedy this? (I had to go up a size in the shoe because of my wide feet, which probably caused the heel gap)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would be interested in hearing a post about shoe inserts. Can't even stand to put on heals now and even some flats are uncomfortable.

  60. A shoe insert related post would be amazing; I have only just discovered them and would love to know your thoughts on how to use them properly and if they really can make shoes that much better.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Maybe this post from Jen would help you with your photo issue? Not sure.

Anyway, the only shoe inserts I use are heel grippers. I just bought some from Target for a pair of black heels and they aren't gripping my heels as much as I would like (I have really narrow heels but a normal width forefoot). Are there particular brands you recommend?

Just one question..I love the look of folding a sweater sleeve and shirt sleeve together look, but does it stretch out the sweater sleeve at the wrist? And do you have sweaters specifically for folding the sleeves? Thanks so much.
