Recent March Purchases - Target, JCPenney, H&M

Since I somehow managed to not shop in February (serious miracle for me), I got a little crazy once March hit.  Can you blame me, though?  So many cute springy items in stores now!  Here are my recent purchases, most of which are from Target unless otherwise noted.

Just a note, I have purchased all of these but I'm still deciding on some.  Below I'll let you into my thought process with each item:

1.  Polka dot sweater (shop).  I tried to resist this thing for a really long time, but let's face--it's hella cute.  Plus, like I confessed in this post my sweater collection could use a boost.

2.  Yellow knit top (shop).  I'm not sure about this one.  It's a lot lot lot more vibrant in real life, which I really like.  However, I'm trying to figure out if I want a full button shirt that works a little more formally or if the popover type works for what I want.

3.  Pink knit top (shop).  This is the same as the yellow top.  I'm also trying to decide on colors.  Leaning towards yellow, but I was also looking for more coral/pink tops.

4.  Polka dot button up (shop).  This fit me really well and I liked that the material was thin though kept it's structure pretty well without being stiff.  But ultimately I decided I don't need it and I don't have a lot of things I'd wear with it.

5.  Graphic Tee (shop).  I'm often at dirt filled camps for my job and graphic tees used to be my typical attire until I got sick of my collection.  I'd love to refresh my collection, but I was very hesitant about this one since Kendi recently posted it on her blog.  Honestly I felt a little lame that basically every time she shows something from Target I want to run out to the store immediately and track it down.  But I love Target!  And Kendi has great taste!  Anyway, I realized that if I didn't have a style blog I would have absolutely NO PROBLEM buying this tee, so I think I'm keeping it!

6.  Striped dress (shop).  This dress is way cuter in person.  And it fits me so well!  I originally had my eye on this dress, but where the flare started was bad for my pear shaped body, making my hips look very disproportionate to my upper body.  I looked a wee bit pregnant--not something you usually want if you are not with child.  The seaming on the bust of this striped dress and the less flared waistline is much more flattering to my smaller upper half.  Winner!

7.  Animal print pants - H&M.  I first saw these on Lauren (Stylized Existence) and loved how she made them look professional but spunky at the same time.  When I saw that they were only $13 at H&M I decided to take the chance on them.  I'm still not sure if I'm gonna keep them because while I LOVE them, I'm currently not bold enough to wear them around like 90% of the people I know.  However, I'm really excited to get around the 10% of my friends that I would be comfortable wearing them around to bust them out!

8.  Printed pants - Joe Fresh from JCPenney (shop).  Thanks to Caroline's tweet about Joe Fresh being at JCPenney I went over there and found these pants!  If you couldn't tell from #7, I wanted printed pants.  While I'm not sure about #7, I'm definitely keeping these.  They feel great, were only $29, and the print is subtle enough that I would feel very comfortable wearing these often.  Woohoo!

9.  Floral scarf (shop).  Sooo springy!  I'm pretty in love with this.  There are a bunch of other scarves online and in store at Target right now that are pretty awesome too.

10.  Blue blazer - H&M (shop similar optionoption #2).  LOVEEEEEE.  I also tried the blue blazer from JCPenney which was very similar to the H&M one.  It was very comfortable and laid nicely, so check that out!

Somehow even with all of the items I'm keeping, I am still $5 under my budget for Jan-March thanks to selling some of my old items.  However, March is only half over so I might be in trouble haha.

On the note of selling my old items, I'll be listing more soon!  Like this crochet top, this grey shirtdress, and this summer dress.  Be on the lookout!

  1. These are awesome purchases! I particularly love both polka dotted tops and the blue blazer. I've made it through most of March without buying much, but you may have convinced me to head out to Target...:)

  2. These are really nice! Love #4 and # 8, although I am not sure I can pull of print pants.
Have you seen some of the joe fresh dress. I heart them, bought two :)

I love all the spring colors!! My sister and I just attended a fashion show hosted by Jamie Krell last Thursday and she said one of the "spring essentials" is printed pants - and you posted TWO of them!! I am excited to see if you keep them and how you work them into your outfits!!

  5. Thanks for the shoutout ladyfriend! Please keep those $13 pants - just tone them down with something you feel more comfortable wearing - perhaps a plain black shirt and mustard cardigan? Or a colored top and black blazer? You can do it! It's fun and necessary to step out of our comfort zones every once in a while - so you don't get into a rut! xo

  6. Great pieces. They look like they will be very versatile for spring and summer.

  7. I am in love with Target as well!!! It makes me sad that there is no H&M close to me though :(

  8. Love that polka dot sweater and I need those leopard pants! So cute!

  9. The leopard pants are a little much for me, personally, but I think they could be really cute on someone else. I actually tried those exact Joe Fresh pants on, but something about my body shape made them horrific on me (was quite sad about that). I love the blazer and the mint polka dot shirt. CUTE!

  10. I have had my eye on that striped dress forever! I just have so many dresses and not enough opportunity to wear them already. But you can't beat that price for a flattering dress. :)

  11. Hi Audrey, I love your blog! My question is not related to this post specifically, but to summer clothing. Would you consider doing a blog post about those months where it is 85-100 degrees every day, and you get in a rut of shorts and tank top? Or want to mix out of shorts, since they are 4 inches shorter than you wish they were? :) Just trying to get ideas for outfits that are still fun and fresh, but more for a 30 year old than a 19 year old. Thanks!

  12. Audrey! SQUEAL! A girl after my own heart!

You must keep the polka dot sweater - bought it this Sunday and wore it all day and loved how it looked current and casual at the same time with boyfriend jeans and loafers.

I kept the mint polka dot shirt and I urge you to reconsider. Read about my adventure with it here: http://myclosetcatalogue.com/2013/03/04/week-3-of-harrowing-trips-and-minty-goodness/

Keep the printed pants. Printed pants ftw! Went crazy at jcp's Joe Fresh collection meself but invested in colored skinnies.

Must. Look. Away. At your other purchases. Am waay over my March budget and the month is only halfway gone. :(

  13. OMG the H&M trousers!! Fairly sure they are the same ones I've been thinking about for ages. They are so cool but I'm the same as you, I love them but not sure when I'd wear them. I guess as they're black and white, they're almost a neutral and you could wear any colour top with them and bright shoes.
I love your blog. I think we have similar styles/likes and you always inspire me to try something a bit different. :-)

  14. As for the pink/yellow shirts, I would vote for pink. I've found that yellow is just not a good color for us Asians to have so close to the face, with the exception of mustard.

I love the blue blazer and the floral scarf, so pretty! OK, and if you think this is called "going crazy" umm... I bought SO MUCH stuff already this month. :(

and PS. It's spelled JCPenney, with an "e" at the end :)

  15. Penney! I never noticed. I feel like I've had a booger on my face for years and just now realized it. hahaha.

  16. I. Love. That. Scarf!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I want to tell myself they're almost a neutral, but they will definitely not get neutral reactions! haha. I'm hoping to figure out some way to tone them down a little.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Haha, I spelled it "Penny" for the longest time until someone pointed it out to me once and NOW I WILL NEVER FORGET.

  19. Hey Jen! Sure, I can keep that in mind. I don't often have to dress for such hot days since it's usually "perfect" here in San Diego...but once every few years we have a string of really hot days in the summer. Anyway, just saying I don't know if I'll be much help, but I'll keep it in mind! My tip though, a nice sleeveless jersey dress that breathes easily and can be changed up with a skinny belt--not too annoying of an accessory in heat.

  20. Yes! I really liked the Joe Fresh dresses, but I managed to resist. Which two did you buy?

    ReplyDelete
  21. LOVE your picks! I'm not a huge yellow fan, so I vote no on the yellow. And I'm on the fence with the animal print pants. While I love the $13 price tag, if you can't wear them more than once, is it worth it?

  24. I bought this one: http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/joe-fresh%25e2%2584%25a2-print-faux-wrap-dress-/prod.jump?ppId=pp5002490829&catId=cat100210008&deptId=dept20000013&N=1949&topDim=Brand&topDimvalue=joe+fresh&dimCombo=Brand|&dimComboVal=joe+fresh|&currentDim=Brand&currentDimVal=joe+fresh I was a little concerned because I ordered it online, and I have bigger breasts that it would be inappropriate for work, but its not, its perfect. Now if only the snow would melt here in Wisconsin :P And this one : http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/women/dresses/joe-fresh%25e2%2584%25a2-striped-dress/prod.jump?ppId=pp5002360025&catId=cat100210008&deptId=dept20000013&N=1949&topDim=Brand&topDimvalue=joe+fresh&dimCombo=Brand|&dimComboVal=joe+fresh|&currentDim=Brand&currentDimVal=joe+fresh Which apparently already sold out, so I got on time :)

I love the scarf and need a good spring one. Thanks so much for all your advice. I made my first Target wardrobe makeover purchases the other day. While shopping I made sure that everything would work with several different items of clothing. My first outfit post trip was a success and I received lots of compliments. It's so much fun knowing my wardrobe is receiving a face lift.

  27. How do you feel about that small/large polka dot tee now that you own it? I'm debating whether or not to buy it (I LOOOVE it in the pictures)....does it fit well?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love love love love it. I've worn it three times in the last 4 days already with jeans and red flats. (Repeat offender much?)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm so happy for you, Krystle! I love hearing that you got lots of compliments on your first outfit of your wardrobe makeover!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I loved that second one but I avoided even trying it on because I had just bought the striped dress above from Target. I love the seaming on the Joe Fresh one though!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I cannot even wait to see you wear that striped dress!! It looks so versatile, and I love when you wear dresses :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ok -- must get one...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ah, crap...sold out online? It's not showing up, and I know it was there the other day. Any chance you know if it's in stores?

    ReplyDelete
  34. You can use their "Find in Store" button to see which store near you carries it in your size. It's right under "add to your cart." Choose your size, type in your zip code, and it'll show which stores carry it near you!

  35. I'm really the same as you for the printed pants (although I'm no SO into the trend... yet) there are things that I don't dare wear but that I wouldn't hesitate with some of my friends hehe.
Also, I can't wait for Target to come to Canada because all the bloggers are always raving about it!

  36. Hi Audrey! Thanks for sharing your purchases - I've already gone out and purchased the gray t-shirt at Target. It is just too durn cute! I have a question for you about selling your items: how do you do it? I have always given my items to Goodwill. In the back of my mind I have thought, "a lot of this stuff is in great condition, I could sell it!", but I'm not sure where to sell it and how to price it. I would love to hear some tips from you on selling items. Thanks!

  37. Can you do a post on how you wore #6. I just ordered the dress and I cant wait to wear it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just echo the request. :) Just finished searching for all of your posts on shorts. :) You must visit the south or midwest in summer, right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you so much for this! So inspiring and so helpful! Also, you may have shared this before, but how did you go about coming up with a reasonable budget and planning for what to buy?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Glad you've found it helpful! I haven't talked about budgeting yet, but I have talked a bit about learning what to buy in these two posts: http://www.puttingmetogether.com/2012/09/shopping-mistakes-ive-made.htmland http://www.puttingmetogether.com/2012/02/building-remixable-wardrobe-part-2.html. On top of that, I have a whole series that is dedicated to rebuilding a wardrobe from scratch but some people have also used it simply to refine their wardrobe. 41. HI Aubrey,
I just wanted to say I love fashion blogs, but I like yours especially because items are affordable and I can find them. A lot of other bloggers tend to purchase items that are slightly on the more expensive side. Although I understand quality=a bit more money, I don't think this is always the case. In addition I can't wear skirts etc to work, because my work is a bit more physical. Although we are completely different sizes, your picks are basic and stylish (is this possible???).

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love it, running to Target today, lets see if I get lucky with a blazer finally

    ReplyDelete
  43. Check online first! There's an in-store locator online. When you're looking at an item on the Target website there's a button that says "find in store" (right under "add to cart") and you can see if items are available in your size in stores near you.
