A Reminder on Proportions

Top: Forever 21
Scarf: handmade by sister

Outfit #1:
Trouser Jeans: Gap
Tan Cardi: H&M (similar)
Booties: Target (similar: onetwo)

Outfit #2:
Olive Cardi: Target (same in other colorssimilar)
Jeans: Loft (similar)
Boots: Macy's (onetwothreefour)

Thanks to Go Chic or Go Home, I came across this oldie from Kendi and realized I now had all the pieces to make it work.  I tried in the first outfit, but that tan cardigan is too fitted and the top was too billowy for trouser jeans.  It was okay, but the silhouette it created was rather unflattering.  (edit: You can't tell in the pictures because I'm standing still, but when I walked or moved at all I looked like a football player!)  I tried it again with a larger cardigan that could contain the shirt's volume and more fitted bottoms to change the proportions.  While I really like the first try (when I'm standing still), I had to redo it and fix the proportions.  Note to self: balance out a billowy top with fitted bottoms.  (Katie took the words right outta my mouth.)

Also, I need to remind myself that if an outfit isn't working I should try playing with different proportions rather than scrapping it altogether.  When an outfit's not working do you usually think to adjust proportions, or would you be tempted to scrap it right away?

  2. I really like the first outfit with trouser jeans and gray booties. Looks great.

  3. Î would have to disagree. I think the trouser jeans are much more flattering, and I prefer the first outfit. But of course the way you feel in it needs to be most important, and if you like the second one better, then it's the right choice.

  4. I have to say - I actually prefer the first outfit! I think trouser jeans look fabulous on you!

  5. I agree with other comments. I think you look great in the first outfit too! Maybe it looked different in person than it does in the photographs.. ? Either way, if you don't feel great in it, then you shouldn't wear it. I'm glad you were able to make the outfit work. Love your blog. I recommend it to everyone!

  6. Thanks, Heather. I kind of hid it in the pictures because I stood still, but when I walked, the top just ballooned out and made me look huge on top!

  7. Hi Daizy! Yes, it was one of those things that looked very different in person than in photographs. When I walked and the top flapped in the wind, it was quite large!

Both outfits looks great on you! I kind of have similar fashion formula to balance out clothes loose top + slim bottoms or fitted top + loose bottoms. It seems to work out well.

  11. That's a good point. I don't think proportions was something I ever thought about. At least not concsiously. I will try to keep that in mind next time an outfit doesn't work.

  12. I adjust proportions. I'll add something, take something away, adjust a belt, and so on. I tend to wear billowy tops with pencil then bottoms, and it also works well in reverse (flowy bottom, structured top.

  13. I definitely play with proportions. Sometimes it's as simple as changing one piece. I think the first outfit is actually my favorite (and it's more similar to the inspiration outfit) but if the shirt ballooned out I understand why you wouldn't like it. Maybe try it again with a different shirt? Or belt / tuck in the top to minimize the billowyness shirt?

  14. Love both the outfits and I totally agree with proportions. If I have a billowy top then I pair it with some skinny pants and vice versa.

  15. Adorable outfit, as always, but I seriously love that scarf. SO cool that your sister made it. Any chance she would be willing to share the pattern?

  16. Love both versions actually. :) However if it's the volume on top that bothers you, you might try skipping the scarf and adding a belt at the waist. The volume then moves to the bottom and your legs look miles long. :)
And I am always playing with proportions in my outfits. It's part of the fun. :)

  17. I can definitely ask her! I think she got the pattern online, so I'm sure she'd easily be able to share it.

  18. my first comment ever to say that i finally joined go chic or go home after seeing it on blogs everywhere for over a year. you were my tipping point, Audrey!

  19. No! I saw your first picture and thought, "finally! A style blogger wearing something other than skinnies or a pencil skirt!" I LOVE the first outfit, minus the scarf, but not the second. I can't wait until the skinny pant trend is over.

  22. Good point about proportion! This is something I have been paying more attention to later and feel a lot more confident when things "fit" together!

  24. I love the individual pieces of both outfits and think they both look great! I know what you mean about feeling like a linebacker! lol

  25. Aww I was about to say, I like the look with the trouser jeans! But makes sense to NOT look like a football player.. unless you were a mannequin or something.

  26. I love that shirt and scarf combo. The colors are really pretty! So funny you're talking about proportions today. The other day I mimicked an outfit I saw online and standing still, it looked fine, but walked around, it was a definite no. :) I'll be honest, I just scrapped it, but next time I'll think about adjusting the proportions.

  27. It's so weird because I didn't think there was anything wrong with the first (I thought it was actually really cute) but when you type it out and have picture sto compare, I see what you are saying. It's interesting that a bigger cardigan actually makes you look smaller. I do love that inspiration picture, and now I'm inspired to find a similarly patterned top. Thank you for getting me out of my safety zone :)

  28. That would be fantastic...thank you!
