Community Service

Top: Old Navy (similar: one, two, three)  |  Jeans: Ann Taylor
Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's (see here for options)  |  Scarf: c/o Maybe Matilda (shop)

I wore this last Wednesday to a community service agency to help pack bags of food for the local community.  We were up to our ears in produce and got to serve a couple hundred families!

I've been tied up most weekends this year preparing for a HUUUUUGE conference for work this December, so I haven't been able to be more involved in community service events, but I'm excited to once I get my life back in January!  A friend from our church started a non-profit org a while ago called Bridge of Hope which helps meet the needs of distressed families in San Diego.  I love the stuff they do and am looking forward to being more involved next year.  Have you helped in community service events before?  How was your experience?

(That was totally not where I though today's post was going, but there it is.)  Have a great weekend!

Google & Cupcakes

Top: Target (similar: one, two, three, four)  |  Jeans: Old Navy (similar: one, two)
Scarf: Old Navy (onetwothree)  |  Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's (see here)

Let's overlook the fact that this outfit is exactly this outfit with red pants instead of mint.  That, friends, is real life.  Find something that works and stick with it.  Make it easy on yourself and do little tweaks here and there.  And I didn't even bother to change the scarf to mix it up more because I just really, really love chambray, red, and leopard.

I wore this to have lunch with a friend at Google.  Basically anyone who lives in the Bay Area in California has a friend who works at Google.  If not, you need to make a friend there because all of their cafeterias have gourmet chefs and are FREE.  For employees AND guests.  Bam.  I may have taken 4 of their pumpkin cupcakes to go and I may have eaten them all by myself.  Plus some apple crisp.  Don't judge.  You know you're drooling right now.

So San Diego

I have been waiting to recreate this outfit from Kendi, and it was finally cool enough to.  When my mom saw me in this outfit she said, "Oh, you are SO from San Diego in that yellow!  People here usually wear very dark colors this time of year."  Said by the woman in bright pink.  Yeah, well.  Haven't you seen how to take a summer outfit into fall, Mom?  I think wearing completely dark colors through out all of fall and winter is a little depressing, but I also feel weird wearing only bright colors.  You've gotta mix it up a little, and I think neutralizing the bright yellow with tweed is a great compromise!  Do you stick to only dark colors this time of year, or are you okay with wearing some color here and there?

Packing for NorCal

The fence in the background means this is another outfit from our trip to Northern California during the week of Thanksgiving.  There's something about this outfit that I find very soothing.  Maybe it's the muted colors or because it's made of a bunch of basics without anything too attention-grabbing.  Whatever it is, it's calming.

Sweater  //  Old Navy (similar)
Jeans  //  Forever 21

Anyway, I love seeing what people pack, so I put together a list of what I packed for the trip in case you like that kinda stuff too.  All of the outfits I post this week will be from my trip, so you'll get to see my suitcase unfold.  I didn't curate this list as well as the last one because I had a lot of space in my suitcase, so I brought a couple of extra things that were nice to have but that I could have done without.

At the end I'll try to do a recap of the outfits I wore plus the potential outfits that I didn't wear.  I felt like I had a ton of outfit options!  That part was really fun because I remember getting up to NorCal for Thanksgiving last year and hating what I had packed.  I felt so trapped!  I did much, much, MUCH better this time!

In addition to this stuff, I brought a few necklaces and a bracelet.  Stay tuned this week to see the outfits I made from this list!

Road Trippin' Outfit

Last weekend we took a 7 hour road trip up to Northern California to spend Thanksgiving with our families.  We are really grateful for the time we got to spend with our families, and especially because my family LOVES food and has a bunch of amazing cooks.  If you follow me on Instagram, you got a peek of our Thanksgiving feast.  *Droooool.*

I wore this outfit on the drive up.  I don't like wearing sweats when traveling because 1) if it's too comfortable I get sleepy and start feeling lethargic and 2) my sweats would drag on the ground in public bathrooms and that is a BIG no-no for me.  So, loungy but still wearing real clothes is my deal.  Sweatshirt thingy fit the bill!  I wore it with flats in the car so that I could slip my shoes on and off and boots for dinner with the family immediately when we arrived, just because I love wearing boots.  I'm curious, do you prefer to wear "real clothes" when traveling, or will we find you in sweats?

Relaxed & Thanksgiving Traditions

Even though this look is really simple, it feels a little foreign and new to me, and I really liked it!  One of the reasons I wanted one of these sweatshirt thingies* is because it's a chic way to wear a sweatshirt.  Talk about comfy!  I loved pairing it with a maxi dress--my other key ingredient for comfort--for a relaxed look that wasn't schlumpy.  I ran errands all day in it and even considered wearing it again for Thanksgiving since the looseness would be prime for endless eating.  (Though, I decided to wear something else.)  In our family, Thanksgiving is not about dressing up and looking nice.  It's about eating as much food as possible and lounging around in food comas while we laugh at our drunk uncles (aka "drunkles").  What do you look forward to most about Thanksgiving family time?  (Or other traditions, if you don't gather with family.)

Lace Tops

I bought this lace top from Forever 21 last year as an experiment, unsure if I could make use of it.  Little did I know it'd become one of my most worn pieces!  It's as versatile as a plain tee but brings a little special something to an outfit.  I've used and abused this poor thing, plus since it was an experiment I just went with what was cheap, and now it's time for a new one.  I attempted to replace it with this awesome crochet top, but that one is too big and hard to style and is sadly one of the shopping mistakes I've made.  I ordered this one from Old Navy, and while I don't have high hopes for it, we'll see how it goes.  Lace tops, yea or nay for you?

Parkaraks and Barns

Meet my new favorite jacket!  I've been looking for an anorak type of jacket for nearly a year, but I had given up once I realized that they all cost more than I wanted to pay and/or weren't lined very well.  Then, one fateful day I was at Target and saw this jacket.  I don't think this is considered an anorak because, well, I don't really know what an anorak is, plus Target calls it a parka.  Anorak, parka...whatever it is, it fits the feel that I was going for and it's lined without making you look puffier.  It worked so well on a recent camping retreat, but was also so cute with the girly yellow dress outfit that I showed last week.  I even wore it with Friday's outfit paired with leopard pumps.  Even though you'd think this parkarak thingy is only for rugged, camping types of outfits, I'm finding that it kinda goes with everything!

On another note, let's not talk about how my friend told me that my outfit looked like a barn.  Even if you agree, for my own ego, let's pretend you don't.  That is not the kind of "compliment" people around here like to receive.  Sad times.

Two Toned

I don't know what it is, but I have a growing appreciation for two-toned items.  A while back I bought this necklace from Forever 21 because it was cheap and I was looking for a gold necklace.  I thought the gold chain with black leather woven in was cool.  Little did I know that it would be infinitely more versatile than my other plain gold chain because it fits either with other black accessories or gold accessories.  I know, it sounds like it wouldn't be a big deal but it really makes a huge difference.  Similarly, the new chain bracelet that I'm wearing and leopard print items seem to have that versatility, and adding items like that helped to pull together my black and brown outfit.  (And yes, black and brown is okay to wear together!)

Dresses In the Rain

I put to use one of my go-to fall outfit formulas on a kind of rainy day last week.  Dresses and the rain?  Sounds like a bad idea, and I used to think so too, but it's kind of becoming my secret weapon on rainy days.  I'm not sure why, but on rainy days I'd rather wear a knee-length dress with boots.  (Definitely not a maxi dress, though.)  I think it's because whether I'm wearing jeans or a dress, I will wear boots, which is already awesome in fearlessly plowing through puddles.  But there's something about not having to worry about soggy jeans sticking to your legs and taking forever to dry that makes me feel even more carefree.  Somehow it works in my mind!  Would you wear dresses in the rain?

Scarves and Stuff

Tee: Cotton On  |  Cardigan: H&M (similar: one, two)  |  Jeans: Target (similar: one, two)  |  Flats: Gap (shop, similar) |  Scarf: Old Navy (similar: one, two, three)

Casual day.  (Not unlike any other day, really.)  People, if you don't know what to wear in the morning, take a cue from Jessica Alba, the queen of scarves.  You cannot go wrong with jeans, a plain tee, and a fun scarf.  I think next on my list is a striped scarf or a polka dot one.

Seen any cute scarves lately?  Give me links if you can!  I used to feel like if I gave a scarf as a gift I was somehow copping out, but after the revelation of the importance of accessorizing I'm saying, "Self, rethink that."  A cute scarf is moving to the top of my list of great gifts to give for Christmas!

Speaking of fun things to give, with all the traveling I've been doing, one of my new favorite travel companions is this washi tape pouch from The Pleated Poppy.  It brightens me up when I'm feeling tired of living out of a suitcase.

You might remember The Pleated Poppy giveaway from last month.  Such cute stuff there!  Definitely keeping their stuff in mind as I'm thinking of Christmas presents.

Mint and leopard because, why not?

Top: Target (similar: one, two, three)  |  Jeans: Target (one, two, plus sized option)  |  Scarf: Old Navy (similar: onetwothree)  |  Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's (one, two, three, four)

Mint and leopard.  In my room I thought this outfit was a great idea, but as I walked out the door into real life I had a "What on earth am I wearing?" kind of moment.  Mint in the fall?  Mint and leopard?  Why do I kind of feel like a superhero wearing colored skinnies and boots?  But then I just decided to think it was awesome (or at least pretend to).  Mint and leopard?  Yes.  Why the heck not?

I think confidence is one of the best accessories you can wear.  I've had plenty of days lately where I've walked out of the house chuckling at myself, wondering what the heck I'm wearing.  But I just find a reason to love it--whether it's being able to appreciate one particular piece, or simply being proud of myself for trying something new even if it's not my favorite outfit, or because it's such a train wreck that it's so dang funny--anything.  It so happens that while it's not always the case, I genuinely came to love this outfit!  Not gonna lie, though...even though I decided that I loved this before leaving the house, it helped when I ran into two girls I knew who saw me and instantly showered me with compliments about my outfit.  Even with all I've just said, you'd better believe inside I was like, "Whew!"  :)

What do you do when you walk out of the house unsure about your outfit?

Back! And the winner of GCOGH challenge...

Plaid shirt: Target (shop)  |  Sweatshirt: Target (shop similar: one, two, three)  |  Jeans: Loft  |  Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's (one, two, three, four)  |  Beanie: handmade gift

I'm BACK!  Thanks for your well wishes while I was away.  It was nice to be on a blogging break so that I could catch up with work, but I missed you guys.

Part of the busyness of work included a trip to Madison, where I *finally* got to wear long sleeves and pants without breaking a sweat.  Even though I'm kind of tired of traveling, one thing I do love is getting to escape Southern California and wear a layer or two.  I've been waiting to wear this sweatshirt thingy and the plaid shirt for 3 months, but San Diego wouldn't let in the cold.  You'd better believe that when I saw it would be 44 degrees in Madison, these were the first items I packed.

Also, to everyone who entered the Go Chic or Go Home closet challenge, sorry to keep you waiting for the winner!  (Winners were chosen at random via random.org.)  Here they are:

Congrats, ladies.  I forgot to ask for your email addresses in the challenge post, so please email me to connect you to Cynthia at GCOGH for your prize.

Thank you all for taking the challenge.  I hope you find GCOGH as helpful as I have!
