My Fall Favorites

Whew, guys.  Mid-September to mid-October is one of the busiest seasons of work for me, so I haven't had as much time during the day to take outfit pictures.  Plus, it's still 90 degrees, so it's shorts and tanks here.

I've been trying to be grateful that it's so sunny and warm, but everyday I longingly look at my fall clothes wondering when I'll be able to wear them.  So, today I'm showing you the fall pieces I can't wait to wear.

These are the pieces (or general types of pieces) that I wore to death last fall and winter, and I plan to do the same this year!  Before you get tempted to buy these just because you've seen them on a blog, make sure you read up on Shopping Mistakes I've Made so that you don't make the same.  Just because these are my personal faves doesn't mean they have to be yours.  Remember, look through your pinboards to help you define your own style.

My plan is to write a follow-up post soon showing you my favorite fall go-to outfits.  For today, here are the pieces!

Plaid Shirts
I currently have four of these because my favorite go-to fall outfit is a plaid shirt with skinny jeans and riding boots.  They can be layered under a sweater, blazer, vest, or a chunky cardigan--like the one featured today.  You can also wear them tucked into or knotted over a skirt.  They're so versatile!

Chunky Cardigans
I have a couple of thicker sweater cardigans that I wore to death last year.  I wore them over plaid shirts, my denim button up, striped shirts, and dresses.  Such a cozy layering piece!

Stripe Tee
It's no secret that I've worked my short-sleeved striped tee to death, and for this fall I stocked up on a few long-sleeved versions for cooler weather.  There are so many ways to accessorize a plain striped tee even just with necklaces and scarves.  Or you can layer them under cardigans, blazers, and vests (like here).

Cognac Boots
Do I really need to talk about these?  They instantly make any outfit more stylish!  I think boots are one of the main reasons I love fall fashion!  :D
Scarves
There are too many awesome scarves out there to show pictures and provide links to everything.  Whether it's a chunky knit one for fall and winter or a light, printed one, they are an easy way to bring pattern and color to an otherwise plain outfit.  They are my replacements for necklaces when the weather cools!

Aaaand my next outfit post will resume with shorts and tanks.  What pieces are your fall staples?

  1. A girl can never have enough cardigans and striped shirts! Lately I've been in love with stripes. Target has a great selection of sweaters to choose from. A ton of different colors. Great post, Thanks for sharing.

  3. I bought my very first pair of riding boots this year. Sad. So so sad. I bought them in July and am DYING to put them on, but I live in Texas and it just isn't cool enough yet although we are taking my son to a pumpkin patch this weekend, so I might have to wear them anyways! Great fall staples, thanks for sharing!

  8. I remain on a search for the perfect plaid shirt for fall. We had a turn for fall weather where I live, but then it's been 80+ degrees the last few days! I just recently discovered your blog, and I've been loving it. You write in a really logical and accessible way. Thanks for sharing lots of great info.

  9. how do you think the Target shirt fits? I have been eyeing it for a long time but don't know how to fit junior sizes to me. I am a size 6 so usually in normal women's clothing I am a SM or Medium, but not sure here!

  10. Thanks for the link! I have a major scarf obsession for winter, too (which is handy, since I can make them for myself). They make even the lamest outfit feel stylish!

  11. I think the reason I love your blog so much is because our style is so similar. Love!!

  12. Hey Liz! I have the orange one that I showed above, and I'm usually a 6 on top also. I was between a S and M and had a really hard time deciding, but I landed on the S. It shrinks a tinyyyyyyy bit in the wash, and I have a very small chest, so if you have a medium or larger chest then I'd suggest a medium.

  14. My fall and winter staples include layering items. It can be cold and rainy in N. Cal, so things that won't soak through is always good too. I hope to be able to wear my colored skinny jeans and will look for a few plaid shirts to layer with sweaters. Oh! Just talking about fall gets me excited for it! Hurry up already!

  17. For fall, my staples are usually jeans, sweaters(stripes & cable knit), cardigans, and ankle boots(which I finally know now, thanks to you, to roll the jeans' hem). This fall will include blazers, and my new cognac knee-high boots. Any tips on choosing scarves? I feel like my brain leaves the building when I'm in the scarf section of stores.

  18. Don't feel bad. I just bought some too, within the past month, and it's been 90's-100 basically since August with not much signs of easing up.

  21. I like all of your fall staples. Skirt, tights, boots, and sweaters are definitely my fall staples that I wear over and over during the season.

  24. SCARVES! Gosh, I seriously probably wear them 90% of the time now - I've even started making my own! They are warm and are an easy layering piece.

  25. This looks so much like my wishlist....riding boots, chunky sweaters, striped tees. DSW also has this awesome pair of Bandolino riding boots. Looks like the cognac is sold out online, but check the stores. I tried on a cognac pair, and it felt great! I ordered it online, and I'm just waiting for it now :)

  26. I found the perfect pair of riding boots last year, and I can't wait to bust them out once the weather gets cooler! And of course scarves are perfect for every outfit. I saw some really pretty chunky ones at Old Navy yesterday. They're a great way to give any outfit a pop of color! :)
Thanks for your blog.. it helps me think practically about the wardrobe I'm trying to build.

  27. Thanks so much! Really helpful. My alma mater's colors are orange & blue, so it's too perfect not to buy, especially at that price. Also, my 3 year old is named Audrey, so I love your blog for that reason too ;)

  28. I'm a new reader of yours, and I love this post! Fall outfits are absolutely my favorite. I have no fewer than 7 pairs of boots (heeled, flat, tall, ankle, brown, gray, black, you name it, I've got it) and I'm always WAY too excited for summer to go away so I can put them back in rotation. Thanks for the great tips!

P.S. I think it's sort of funny how your "chunky sweaters" are something I would call a "light cardigan." I'm from MN, where it's currently 46 degrees and the northern part of the state already has snow. I think it's so interesting how different regions have specific weather-related fashion challenges.

  29. I too am a new reader of yours and WOW love your blog. I am hoping for your opinion on striped shirts. I have a striped shirt but the stripes are red and blue. Do you think that says "too summery nautical" or is it okay for fall? Thinking of pairing with skinny jeans and tall/riding boots (either cognac or brown). Many thanks! Christina

  30. Thanks so much, Christina! Without seeing it, it's hard to say, but I think if you paired it with other "fall" type colors/textures it would be fine for fall. Like a brown tweed or a navy blazer, or your suggestion with skinny jeans and riding boots is perfect,
