Chambray Tops, a Skirt's Best Friend

Top: Target (similar: one, two, three)  |  Skirt: c/o Sway Chic (similar: one, two, three)  |  Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's (similar: one, two, three)  |  Bag: gift

I've gotten quite a few emails from you guys asking about what to pair with a skirt that's _____ color or ____ pattern, besides a black or white tee.  My first suggestion is always to pair it with a denim button up to, either tucking it into the skirt and wearing a belt or tying it over the skirt like I did here.  This is one of my closet staples and made it onto my Fall Favorites list because it's such a versatile piece and a great alternative to a plain tee.  Pair it with boots in the fall and maybe some tights for shorter skirts, and your skirts will have a new best friend.  And who doesn't like awesome new friends?

  1. Yea! Love it. I actually bought a chambray shirt after reading your buying guide. I had bought one a couple years ago, but I didn't like the style, and it was too tailored. I wanted a more traditional one, and I have already worn the heck out of it. The nice thing is that the more worn it gets, the better it looks.

  4. Love this look! You are proving that black & brown can look amazing together. I am so obsessed with maxi skirts right now, and now I want to wear mine with a knotted chambray top ;)

  5. I like the lighter chambray with the stripes. I've been rocking a darker one with leggings for a more autumn-y look (please excuse the poor pic quality!)

  8. This is the first time EVER that I don't like your outfit. I think the boots don't match anything in that outfit. If you were wearing ballerinas, for instance, I would love it. But those boots... nay... (sorry for my honesty! Don't take it personally - I mean, I love your blog...)

  10. I bought a chambray top because I love all of your combos, but it just didn't feel right on me:-( I felt boxy and uncomfortable with the collar. I tried it tucked in with black slacks and a skinny belt. I eventually took it back since I didn't think I'd end up wearing it very much. But you definitely look very cute and well put together in yours!

A chambray shirt is on my wish list, but I am hesitant. I just don't know if I can pull it off.

  21. It is a great suggestion, not to be forgotten. Add a necklace or bracelets of colour, and the denim doesn't feel so boring. Nice outfit!

  23. Chambray shirts are like a pair of awesome jeans. A neutral that goes with anything! :)

Not entirely sure I like the boots with maxi skirt, but it works. Maybe because I'm in seattle, and if it's boots weather, it means it's raining, and maxi skirts/dresses + rain = soggy hems.
